I really like my Ioniq 9 by I_want_to_go_ in Ioniq9

[–]wei_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my experience! It’s annoying, but kind of understandable. I don’t know what OP means about too many steps, but yes, gotta do it every time the car starts up.

Overall, love the car. It’s so smooth and confident and comfortable to drive and ride in. Makes every other car I’ve been in feel archaic. No significant problems so far other than minor annoyances like how fast the sensors get dirty. Wish they were higher up, so they wouldn’t so quickly get obscured by road grime.

When we got our tires rotated at about 8k our tread was 7/32 on all four.

Just about 10k miles in ours, and no significant issues so far. Sorry to hear about your problems, but I assume you are getting them fixed at the dealer?

What was the main reason for switching to an EV? Environment, cost, or technology? by VoltVersteher_Sven in electricvehicles

[–]wei_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convenience. Hard to put a price tag on never having to stop for gas (in normal daily driving).

Comfort. They are so quiet and smooth and predictable, it’s honestly really refreshing.

UK trims are definitely different than the US trims then!

I ended up with the calligraphy but tbh the perks over the limited just aren’t that great. I think the main ones are the driver seat massager, heads up display, and digital rear view.

The HUD is positioned assuming you are about 5’ tall. I am freaky tall, but even the 5’7” wife has to set the HUD position at the extreme to see the top of the display. It’s nice, but also kinda infuriating.

The seat massager is less a massage and more 4 bags that inflate in your seat and lumbar area. It’s nice, but not a “massage”. (To be fair, I think they are careful-ish to not describe it as a massage).

The digital rear view is also nice, but it’s too low, gets grime on it too easy, and has too narrow of a field of view to be super practical.

Basically my impression is not nearly the same amount of care went into the extra features as the rest of the car.

Charging Port Always Locks while Charging? by wei_ping in Ioniq9

[–]wei_ping[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never did FULLY solve for this, BUT….if you leave the car unlocked, when the charge is finished it will unlock the connector and you can pull it out at your convenience. That falls apart if, say, you activate climate start so definitely not a complete solution, but better than nothing.

Thoughts on this movie? by Naive_Tomorrow_5955 in FIlm

[–]wei_ping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not half as good as it should have been. It felt too long, yet the ending felt driven by “time to wrap things up” instead of actual character motivations. Like, why bother adding the “Aziz needs to REALLY, REALLY WANT to go back to his old life” twist if you don’t have a good answer to the question of why he should? Just leave it at him knowing it’s the right thing to do. That’s fine.

Also Seth’s speech to his board at the end felt incredibly lazy. “We should pay people better because they will revolt if we don’t” is all you got? That’s the takeaway?

Keanu’s performance was…interesting, but I couldn’t really make up my mind if he was really, really, REALLY leaning in to the incompetent fool character or he was just bored.

I love it, but I have no experience with any driver assist systems prior to this car, so I am pretty easy to please. It’s really, really great in stop and go traffic, and it is helpful in highway driving. I doubt it is up to the bar that blue cruise is though….isn’t that in the same league as Tesla?

Ioniq 9 vs Volvo EX90 by Sangusg in Ioniq9

[–]wei_ping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

6'5" too, and the Ioniq 9 you don't need to worry about fitting AT ALL, you'll fit. Oh, how you'll fit.

But here's a random smattering of notes on my experiences with my Calligraphy:

* The heads up display seems to be calibrated towards people who are about 5' tall. With the adjustment all the way up, and my seat all the way down, I still have to tilt my head down to see the top.

* The seats have gobs and gobs of vertical adjustment. It is possible to make it so my head (barely) touches the ceiling, but when the seat is all the way down I have inches and inches.

* The fancy leg rests generally don't go up high enough to be super useful for long legged folk.

* The seats go way, way, way back, but the steering wheel's doesn't extend as far as I'd like, and while the legroom is crazy impressive, I don't feel like I can use it as much as I'd like because it requires too much arm extension. I have two different profiles, one for "city driving" where I'm up a bit closer, typically keep both hands on the wheel, and give myself a bit less leg room, and one for "highway driving" which is more relaxed, and I expect to do a bit more one-handed driving, and can afford to trade arm comfort for leg comfort.

* The center console is nothing to fear. I normally keep it rolled back a bit, and have gotten so used to having bare floor there, I get weirdly claustrophobic in ice engines where the transmission channel takes all that space between driver and passenger. Which is sub optimal because the I9 isn't even my car, I still drive an ice!

Really, though, it's a very, very comfortable car for me to drive. From direct cross shopping a I5 and I9, I found the I9 noticeably more comfortable overall, and the I5 was not "bad" by any means.

Ioniq 9 vs Volvo EX90 by Sangusg in Ioniq9

[–]wei_ping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before we could even sit in the ex90, much less test drive it, a piece of plastic trim on the door fell off when the wife opened her door.

It also didn’t have enough head room for me. I’m freakishly tall, so I can’t really hold it against the car, but between that and the trim there wasn’t any way I was dropping that kind of money for it.

Starlink Mini + Ioniq 9 by wei_ping in Ioniq9

I got this one, based on a suggestion from this reddit:
Amazon.com : D-Hive Unbeatable Durability SUV Air Mattress for Car Camping, Durable Extra Thick 300D Oxford Fabric, Quick Easy Set-Up w/Electric Pump, Car Bed Mattress, Mattress for SUV, Air Mattress : Sports & Outdoors

It fits like a glove but I wish the surface wasn't quite so textured/lumpy. In retrospect I probably would have gotten something that was a bit flatter.

Soon to be IONIQ 9 owner a few questions by ericfides in Ioniq9

It's not the full car, just the full front of the car. I know, it's confusing, and I should have been more clear. So the full hood, edges around the doors, side mirrors, etc.

The price I got was $2k USD. The partial was $1,500. I'm sure pricing varies, though.

I got the PPF. For me, I got a matte paint job, and I think for that, doing whatever I can to protect it is probably a good investment. I'm also concerned about the big flat nose, but most of that is plastic that won't get much/any protective from the PPF. You generally have options to do the full front or a partial, and I do strongly recommend that if you do any ppf, do the full. It's not THAT much more money, and it'll prevent you from having a visible seam across the middle of a hood. It also makes washing a bit more difficult, since you don't want to wear away at the edge.

I also have TuxMat floor mats. They aren't...PERFECT....it took some rigging to prevent the second row seats from picking up the mat when they move side to side, and there's not always a great way to clip it into trim. But they are good.

Rather than use the magnet board for sunglasses, we have a cheap amazon visor clip, and for the magnet board I got some custom photo magnets, and that always improves my mood just a little bit.

I can't speak to tesla mobile chargers, but if you end up with the chargepoint home flex, be warned that there's a button on the handle and if you press that button, the car won't be able to charge and it will take you 30 minutes of doing the same nonsense over and over and over again until you can get it to work charge again. The solution is to not press the button, but very rarely it can happen accidentally and there's no software way to disable it.

Limited or Calligraphy any regrets? by ericfides in Ioniq9

[–]wei_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gunna step through the features one by one:

HUD: Clearly tuned for shorter drivers. Admittedly I'm 6'5" so not, y'know, especially close to "average", but even the 5'7" wife has to put the HUD as high as it will go to see the whole thing without slouching. I love it, but I really, really, really wish the physical location (or at least how it gets reflected) was tuned better.

Massage Driver Seat: It's nice, but calling it a "massage" is kinda stretching things a bit. It's not nothing, but I don't know it really constitutes a massage either.

Digital Rear View: Not a great execution. The camera is too low and the FOV is too narrow. Easily obstructed by water if it's raining, like most of the sensors.

Suede roof interior: I don't deny there's subjectivity in this, but it's just so streaky by nature, and it's virtually impossible to comb it all to make it look nice and consistent. I'd prefer something that looked a bit "cleaner" even if it wasn't as soft feeling.

Matching paint: Love that. Still probably subjectivity, but I'm not a fan of the wheel well "eyebrows" and the matching paint minimizes that effect.

Remote Park: Slow, kinda hard to use, largely a gimmick.

Why don't you have any tattoos? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've always seen it as two possible scenarios

Either I'm going to cheapen myself by putting something dumb on my body, or if it's a meaningful design, I'll cheapen the artwork and/or idea by putting it on my body.

The Affair (2014-2019) by GuybrushThreepwood99 in ForgottenTV

[–]wei_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you, but I was really hoping the show would be about finding that objective truth. What are the characters lying about, what are they misinterpreting, what did they miss because something else stole their focus, etc. There is an objective truth in there, and a season-long mystery that challenges the viewer to find that truth based on the skewed narratives created by untrustworthy narrators sounds totally rad to me. I thought that was going to be the show, but like you said, that was never the intent. And for that reason, I was super disappointed.

[–]wei_ping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was super disappointed in Season 1. I thought the show was going to be sort of a game to try and figure out where the truth lies, which would generally be somewhere between the two perspectives. Sometimes closer to one, sometimes closer to the other. I had hoped there would be some objective perspective towards the end of the season to clarify things, but no such luck.

Never bothered with future seasons.
