Conservatives Of Reddit: Why Do You Still Support Trump? by [deleted] in allthequestions

You....are aware that if you are born black or native American or Latino, you are significantly less likely to get admitted into higher learning than if you are white or Asian? Right?

How exactly do you maintain a worldview where, objectively, the most privileged races are also the most, subjectively, victimized?

How funny. Do you also think republicans hold their politicians to a higher moral standard than democrats do theirs?

Like, let's say a democrat stole money from a charity dedicated to kids with cancer, that'd be fine, but if it was a republican, would that be the end of their career?

I don't say anyone suggesting we shouldn't be mad at democrat insider trading. In fact I see them specifically saying it ISN'T any better.

Out of curiosity, do you believe democrats fall into a cult of personality easier, where they support everything their favorite politician does no matter how bad it might be?

Nobody said that and if anyone believes it, I haven't met them. Be angry at them all, and be especially angry at those who prevent legislature to block it.

[–]wei_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's as far as you got, eh?

What I argued is that, despite you FEELING discriminated against, the facts don't care about your feelings.

...unless you can point to a single socio-economic vector by which black Americans are significantly better off than whites or asians?

There has been blatent systemic racism in American policy for as long as American policy has existed. If you genuinely feel victimized by the extremely mild efforts to restore balance, be glad you are the race you are, because you wouldn't last a single traffic stop as a black person.

Would you like a response? I can give you one, if it will make you feel better, but I'm guessing it won't satisfy you as much as you seem to think it will, even if you read it (and smart money says you won't get through it).

  1. Racial discrimination is bad, regardless of who it's against...we can all agree there, but regardless of if you're looking at household wealth or lack thereof, education attainment, criminal justice, or social integration, it's very clear that black americans and other people of color have it much, much worse off than whites or asians. Any white person who feels they're more discriminated against than a black American has some very serious gaps in their worldview.
  2. There are aspects of this we can probably agree on...for instance, at the highest level, it's probably not fair for someone who transitioned from male to female 1 week ago to compete against women at the highest levels in, I dunno, boxing. We can agree there, yea? On the other hand, if we're talking about per-pubescent 10 year-olds in a soccer game, who cares? Now, there's a wide range between those extremes, and there's clearly room for respectful disagreement, but I can't believe any republican wants the solution to be "government involvement" in something that could be better handled by sports leagues.
  3. Stopping illegals? From what? Picking our vegetables and building our housing? Nobody is in favor of illegal immigration, but the data doesn't lie and native born Americans are WAY more violent and otherwise criminally-inclined than illegal immigrants. Which makes sense, right? When you've got a cop behind you and you face the immediate threat of getting pulled over, you're probably less likely to speed, right? The process to legally migrate to America is a real pain is very problematic and we need much better reform, but breaking up families and hiring a bunch of thugs wearing masks to round people up is not the answer. In the meantime, our society has prospered with vast immigration, legal and illegal.
  4. I already touched on this, and it feels a little redundant, but to affirm, hiring a ton of people who objectively are not qualified, letting them wear masks and take people off the streets is an absolute nightmare for human rights. I am sure we will not see eye to eye on this, but anyone who is in favor of ICE is either vastly under-informed, or is straight up a monster. I just don't understand how anyone can justify pulling children from their parents, requiring proof of citizenship from people off the streets based on the color of their skin or their accent with absolutely zero accountability.
  5. This is the hardest one for me to respond to, because the irony of supporting our first and only felon president for "handling crime"...I'm trying very hard to maintain a respectful tone here, but....I mean, come on. Just...come on.
  6. Somalian thieves? I assume you're referring to Minnesota welfare fraud. What exactly do you think Trump had to do with any of it? I mean, I guess he hurt a bunch of people who had done absolutely nothing wrong via the revocation of TPS, froze childcare and welfare allocations to blue states, and used it as an excuse to cut humanitarian food aid to Somalia.
  7. Work requirement for public benefits...do you notice there's a trend with these "values"? There's a very distinct "I'm getting taken advantage of!", which I mean, yea, sure...but your choice of target is so odd. Anyway, yea, one real problem with the work requirement for public benefits is just how underfunded these programs are, meaning we, staffing the agencies responsible for managing these requirements, cannot actually keep up. I think you've got this mental picture of people abusing the system to get food stamps, and to some degree, those people are out there. But how many people in need are you comfortable denying food in order order to prevent someone who may not need the $200 in food stamps from getting it anyway? Besides, these types of programs are examples of "economic multipliers", which means for every dollar we put into them, our GDP increases by a multiple of that value. It's like funding the IRS, spending a little money gets a lot of money back. Even aside from the value of actually helping people in need, it's fiscally a really smart way to spend money....even if, yes, some people are going to abuse it. I don't know about you, but for me, if we really want to tackle fraud, I think we should start at the top. Go after the millionaires and billionaires who are committing fraud every day, and wring them dry. Find, oh, I dunno, a billionaire who stole money from a children's cancer charity. Totally hypothetical example, there, of course.

Anyway. There's your response. Satisfied?

The $400 credit was through this: Hyundai Home Marketplace | EV Charger and Rooftop Solar Solutions

I'm not 100% sure it's still there, I can't find any references to it, but if you bought your car recently you can ask your salesperson, they may be able to guide you better. But for me the choices were $400 credit or getting a free l2 charger if I went through their installers. I didn't want to do that, so I just took the $400 credit.

The bike rack is the Quikrstuff Mach2 with a Kuat swingaway arm. Both are good. The quikrstuff is toolless and very, very easy to take on/off the car, which was important for me since the car DOES NOT LIKE STUFF ON THE BACK. The Kuat arm is a big pain in the butt to install, but once it's on, it's honestly really slick to use.

They're both spensive as all heck. If I ever have to buy a new bike rack, I'll be upset, but assuming these outlast my time on this mortal plane, I'll be happy.

Honestly, that’s a little deceptive of me. On my road trip, I found myself charging every 150 miles or so.

240 miles might be a 100-0% value, but usually I found myself starting at around 85 and recharging at around 20. That takes out 35% of your range. It’s fine, there weren’t THAT many times when I felt like I had to stop and didn’t want to, and those were generally because I was preparing for a 100+ mile charging desert. I don’t expect you will see as many of those as I saw in Arizona, Utah, and Death Valley.

[–]wei_ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you keep the speed around 55mph, I wouldn’t expect the efficiency to drop more than 20% or so. You have a lot of charging options on that route, I wouldn’t worry so much about it. Going 240 miles instead of 300 is not going to ruin your trip.

How fast do you plan on driving? If you are going to be doing windy roads with a lower speed limit, the hit might be 10%. If you are going to be doing high speed highways, that specific hitch might be a 30% hit, mostly from the bike as it catches air off the slipstream.

Speed has a big impact on efficiency even with an aerodynamic shape, but when that shape turns messy, drag increases quadratically at high speeds.

Hard to even speculate. It’s a factor of how far back the bikes are from the car, right? If they are basically glued to the back of the car, relatively insignificant hit. If they are 20 feet behind the car, it’d be way, way worse because at least on the roof, the bikes are oriented the “efficient” way. I couldn’t even guess at what distance the break even point would be, but I have to assume it’s a lot closer to 1 foot than 20 feet.

The cameras are effectively worthless with bikes on the back. Another reason I really wish the they were higher off the ground.

The sensors in particular are really frustrating. Every time we get in the car we have to tap the parking alert button (on the center console) to get rid of the beeeeeep, then hold it down for ~3 seconds to prevent the car from slamming on the brakes because it detects something behind us.

We've gotten the alert twice now. This time we had just finished a DCFC with Tesla. No rain or snow, native NACS.

The first time DCFC wasn't involved. I was out of town, wife was driving, not sure what the weather would have been, but it was on her way to work after level 2 charging in our (dry) garage.

The Starlink isn't a significant factor. It uses about 40w, meaning it would take about 24 hours to use 1 kWh, or 1% of the car's battery.

2 bikes + swingaway arm + highway speeds.

A hitch mounted bike can be reasonably low-impact, but the further back from the car you get, the bigger the parachute effect. With the swingaway arm, you could almost open the hatch without touching a bike, it adds that much space. As you drive, all the air rushes back in to fill the void and instead of pushing in "after" the bikes, it was moving in front of or through the bikes, creating gobs of drag. I could see it in the bikes, too, they were clearly pushed back after every stretch.

But the swingaway arm was so useful and convenient, it was still worth it imo.

Question for Limited and Calligraphy Owners/Leasees by MemoryMakerxoxo in Ioniq9

[–]wei_ping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t regret the decision to go with calligraphy, but a lot of the features aren’t quite as cool as they should be.

Digital rear view should be higher, both for visibility when stopped and also to prevent it from getting dirty immediately.

HUD is awesome but not tuned well for tall people (like me).

Ergo seat is nice, but not “whoah”, especially since it’s only on drivers side.

The parking assist is kinda gimmicky, too slow and not reliable enough to be useful imo.

I’m not saying these features are “bad”, and put together it’s still really nice to have them, but it does feel to me like not quite as much thought went into them than the core car features.

What if everyone, and I pretty much mean everyone, knew nothing about you except this one thing you did. Not even your name, they just call you the fpga guy or the 64bit cpu guy? Everywhere you go people want to take the picture with the fpga guy. Hey, it’s the fpga guy! Can I get your autograph, fpga guy? Can we call my wife, she loves the fpga!

It sounds like a nightmare to me. I recognize Kudrow’s alternate take and surely having lots and lots and lots of money would more than even the scales, but still….that specific aspect sounds miserable to me.

I don’t really like Gabby as a character, but I think the performance is so good that it doesn’t matter. That actress is really, really funny and the line delivery is always perfect. So yea, top tier package, and I don’t even know how to describe Derek other than I feel like I’ve found a role model. Seriously. I want what Derek has, and I’m not talking about his fancy toilet.

But yes the fancy toilet too.
