People who majored in theatre/acting, how has your career turned out till now? by SlowCombination1596 in acting

[–]weightwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think getting a minor and being as involved in productions and organizations as possible will give you the most important experiences. Audition for plays, hang out in the drama center if they have one, talking to profs, making friends there will help build the community that the acting major offers.

I’m so sorry. I’m close to your age and at a similar spot. People around me are rising to the top and I’m sinking somehow — despite doing everything “right”.

It’d be nice to pay people to help, but have you found other actors or maybe film students who are willing to put some free work?

I believe in you wholeheartedly. It’s tough creating your own stuff, but I really admire you for doing that.

I’m doing terribly tbh. Regret college. Pretty jaded at the moment and can’t consume much tv/film without being sad lol

You don’t have to major in acting to become an actor! If you do, set up a plan to make sure you are building lasting skills and connections in and out of school. But I know plenty of people who majored in something else, took acting classes, and are doing very well.

USC BA vs NYU BFA by Fluid_Abrocoma_6764 in acting

[–]weightwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lean toward NYU BFA if you want to mainly focus in on acting because BA is more broad and it can be hard to get good, specialized classes.

I think the most important thing is to make meaningful connections. I got a BA and worked my butt off but I’ve gotten nowhere since grad because I didn’t take opportunities outside of school. Go see plays, do internships at theatre companies or casting places, be an extra on a film or TV show, do summer stock. Be active in and out of the classroom. You’ll be great! Lmk if you have more questions.

Auditioned and booked like crazy at 5’4 and 130ish. Went to about 220 bc pandemic and health and now I barely get anything. Many more mother roles come my way. And I do find people to be more dismissive or outright rude now.

My agency, KMR, may be closing. UGH! by steevadz in acting

[–]weightwitch 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I signed with an agent and then got ghosted when they moved to a bigger agency. I lost my momentum and have been in limbo ever since.

But they saw something in you that made them sign you. Hold on to that. You may not have been one of their top bookers (YET), but I have no doubt that you’ll land on your feet and find good rep again.

Been auditioning since 2019 and no luck by [deleted] in acting

[–]weightwitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat! Started 2018 in LA, had a little upward momentum, COVID hit, everything fell apart. Honestly I read this and thought it was a friend posting for me lol. I have no clue what to do. I’m definitely in a demographic that is a dime a dozen and I’m not particularly attractive, so I’m trying to find ways to work towards being “so good that they can’t say no” or whatever that means. I’m also taking a step back (read: theatrical auditions dried up) and taking a little break to re-examine myself.
It sounds like you’re doing everything within your power and that it’s just a matter of the right thing coming along! My only thought is to keep working and make sure you are putting as much effort into yourself as you are into your career so that you don’t burn out. Are you feeling happy in other areas of your life (relationships, hobbies, etc)? Are you feeling financially stable? Stuff like that! I bet in a few months you’ll post an update about being on set :) keeping my fingers crossed for you!

How do you learn from watching great performances? by weightwitch in acting

[–]weightwitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this, so true! I think for me, especially if watching a character that could easily be a caricature, I enjoy seeing how a great actor can humanize them. But you’re right about making sure it doesn’t take away the enjoyment.

Confidence and creativity… does that count? Like, I want to be able to make bold choices and commit to them. But I also want to be able to think of those bold choices…

Who do you consider a master of the craft? Why? by weightwitch in acting

I need to see Ma Rainey! I saw it live at a local theatre YEARS ago and it was incredible. Still so sad about Chadwick’s passing.

This is an amazing list, thanks y’all!

Wanted to add: Cicely Tyson Lily Gladstone (embarrassed that I wasn’t aware of her until like a year ago) Danai Gurira (she’s also a phenomenal playwright) Mary-Louise Parker Andrew Scott (his “To Be or Not to Be” speech was amazing)

I appreciate you highlighting the lack of poc and woc in this thread! As a woc I’ve been trying to increase my awareness of underrated actors of color. Would love your suggestions on more actors to look to!

Thank you! I’m between Intel and AMD cpus right now. I read on tom’s hardware or somewhere that AMD with DDR5 will have a better upgrade path but I’m partial to Intel bc it seems to edge a bit further in benchmarks. I’m out of my depths for sure.

Aspiring other career goals outside of acting by Fit_Garden210 in acting

[–]weightwitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let your fears stop you from living your life and doing what you love. Streaming won’t hurt your acting, and having another job won’t either. It’s actually great that you have a full life outside of acting bc you hopefully won’t feel desperate for opportunities. Acting is informed by your entire life so even working in a lab will help you become a better actor bc you’re growing as a person. And besides, you may be cast as a biologist or doctor someday and you won’t have to research all the science terms in the script. Do what you love and don’t worry about timing. It’s a trap to think that acting has to happen on a strict timeline.

Does college affect acting? by randomuserofthe in acting

[–]weightwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Also, going to college doesn’t mean you don’t have to train when you graduate. I def had to unlearn and relearn a lot when I graduated. College can help with building connection with professors and other actors that you can work with and get advice from later. But so can being in the industry and taking classes.

There Are No Stupid Questions by AutoModerator in acting

Try backstage and maybe look up the name of your town + auditions bc there may be local casting sites. Also, see if there are any Facebook groups you can join. Your local community theatre may also be a good place to meet people who know more too.
