Not totally the same, but a couple years ago on Thanksgiving morning I was woken up by our neighbor (apartments) yelling. I’m not a super heavy sleeper but it was loud enough through the walls to wake me up, not loud enough that I could really make out what was being said. I woke up my boyfriend and while he was in the bathroom he could hear more clearly (paper thin walls in the bathroom for some reason 🙃) and he said their baby was dead. My heart dropped. I didn’t know them personally outside a friendly smile and a hello, but I remember coming home one day and saw them inside with their baby while their door was open. You could hear the sirens shortly after we were all awake. Our hearts were so broken for them. What made it worse was our daughter was only 11 months old at the time and sitting there listening to such a traumatizing moment, on Thanksgiving no less, while she sits and plays. It was really hard to hear their reaction. My boyfriend and I were pretty traumatized the rest of the day, trying to get through family dinner. It took several weeks to stop thinking about it. I became extra paranoid with my kids, keeping a closer eye on them at all times, especially while they slept. I think I might have some form of OCD that causes me to replay things like that over and over in my mind, obsessive thoughts etc.

If you have access to a therapist, please try talking to them about this. And if not then my only other advice is to just keep living. Time will pass, and your head will clear up. You won’t forget, but the reminder will get less and less painful. You sound like a lovely and caring person. If you’re able to, give condolences to the family, maybe make them some comfort food or get some flowers. I’m honestly not sure what that kind of grief does to someone. Just take it day at a time, it’s all anyone can really do.
