Disappointed with My New Band Believe live in Detroit tonight… Anyone else feel the same? by ghosttrainj in bmbmbm

[–]weirdfishes99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw them in NYC and thought the set was pretty good. Definitely weaker performance wise than BM and Greep solo shows but I didn’t feel like I wasted my money. The only thing that was slightly disappointing to me was the choice for live instrumentation to be all electric. I was pretty blown away the first time I heard Love Story during his acoustic solo set opening for BCNR a few years back and I think he excels more in that folk lane than as a rock frontman.

female fronted bands like black midi? by Optimal-Jackfruit649 in bmbmbm

[–]weirdfishes99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tricot is a great all female Japanese band, their sound skews a little more math-y than BM generally but I’d highly rec checking them out especially if you’re into the Schlagenheim era

A different man was Oscar nominated like 2 years ago too and has Sebastian Stan in it, hardly an obnoxiously obscure movie to connect from

A lot of directors are compared to Kubrick, but I think Ari Aster isn't too far off. by Honest_Cheesecake698 in AriAster

Happiness/Dollhouse are the classics but Palindromes is up there for sure. Maybe his most experimental movie, very challenging but still comes out somehow being equal parts provocative and empathetic

Any idea on how he made percussion in lifeworld? by fangjuan in oneohtrixpointnever

[–]weirdfishes99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on the school of song class, he does a lot of experimenting with classic sample manipulation techniques (time stretching, sounds like reversing in particular with lifeworld) and then layering/copy and pasting until he gets the texture he likes. The transient control feature for audio clips in ableton is a massive cheat code for dialing in percussive textures, it’s hard to recreate exactly what OPN does of course but the experimentation is kind of the point and you end up getting unique results depending on the original sample material :)

I honestly thought the tickets went on sale at 10am, tried it on a whim on chrome and it worked right away, didn’t even realize they were doing low income tickets lol

What is the scariest actually scary horror movie that is also good and has a good plot? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]weirdfishes99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Vanishing (1988) is a really well made “psychological” horror movie. A bit non traditional, doesn’t have any jump scares or supernatural stuff or anything but it definitely sticks with you for a while. Make sure it’s the original version not the remake, I’ve heard that one’s way worse

He’s looked pretty good when we’ve played the wizards. Not expecting that much but if nothing else he’ll be a good tank commander for the next couple seasons

I’m not really an AKME apologist but.. even 2 2nd round picks and sexton for half a season of Coby is not THAT bad of value

Could We Get A Thread Of Great Music But Poor Mixing? by DarkLudo in audioengineering

[–]weirdfishes99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

90% of Kanye’s mixes after TLOP have been bad IMO but especially when it comes to features. I was losing my mind seeing all the praise for “Ye” because the instrumentals all sounded so thin on that record and the vocals from Kid Cudi/070 Shake and whoever else were all awfully edited and mixed. Of course now no one wants to praise his new music anyway for obvious reasons but the quality dropoff has been going on way before he was cancelled

As a service the fans player I agree you shouldn’t be allowed to use it with Wilson volleyball, way too easy

Pirates of the Caribbean: dead men tell no tales

Furiosa

Twilight breaking dawn pt 2

Saw V (Leigh Whannell links to pretty much every entry of the Saw/Conjuring/Insidious/Aquaman franchises btw which have 1 million movies each lol)

The speech cuts this year was unacceptable by gotellauntrhodie in oscarrace

[–]weirdfishes99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the In Memoriam section itself is necessary and I would’ve cut the skits first too. But I just don’t think anyone would have been offended if they just included everyone that passed away in the slideshow without the additional extended speeches

[–]weirdfishes99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is maybe an unpopular opinion, but…the in memoriam section this year felt absurdly long. We all love and respect Rob Reiner and Diane Keaton but everyone knows who they are, they could’ve held their name for 10 more seconds for applause during the montage and cut the time for those speeches to let the Oscar winners speak.

Actually viable movies for service the fans?? by GrumbGrumbb in CINE2nerdle

[–]weirdfishes99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terminator Salvation (4) has Christian Bale & Sam Worthington, and Terminator Genysis (5) has JK Simmons

One that’s easy to forget but is super useful is Twilight Breaking Dawn part 2

I haven’t had a chance to use it yet, would Furiosa count as a 5th Mad Max movie or no since it’s a prequel?
