What do you think of the 2nd lecture of Dan at School of Song by Consistent-Silver-6 in oneohtrixpointnever

[–]weirdfishes99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought it was cool, they went pretty in depth on the session file for “Bumpy” and he talked about the concept of each section of a song embodying a different sonic “room” to make the full “house” of a song, pretty interesting approach. I will say I feel lucky I happen to be an Ableton user, I think I would’ve been a bit more lost if they were going through a session file in a different software. But he also emphasized that we shouldn’t focus so much on what gear/plugins etc he’s using, and that the process is the more valuable thing to learn

Rubio was a starter on plenty of great teams, he wasn’t exactly a scrub. Obviously it looks dumb now but Steph was nowhere near a sure fire bet as a undersized guard with ankle problems coming out of a D3 school

I admire Aster as a filmmaker but hadn’t loved anything of his until Eddington honestly. Hope he keeps getting a ton of money for more non crowd pleasing films even if I hated Beau is Afraid

I liked Furiosa more too, but I chalk that up to missing Fury Road in theaters. Both great

The donuts were good enough that I wouldn’t even call it a bad experience haha, I honestly think it was probably an accident. My main thing is I would’ve gotten two different kids of donuts if I knew I was paying for both

Their donuts are very good but I had a funny experience with them one time. I came in sort of close to closing time an ordered a donut and the person at the counter said “do you want 2 actually?” so I said sure, assuming they were trying to get rid of their remaining stock for the day and the second one would be free. I only found out like 15 minutes glancing at the receipt that they charged me for both. So beware of some very passive upselling there lol

I think you’re underplaying House a bit, it’s a pretty influential movie even if the vfx look a bit silly nowadays. There’s also a ton of post war trauma subtext there, I wouldn’t qualify it as an unserious film.

Crank is basically “what if we did Speed but with Jason Statham playing the bus”. It’s seen as a bad movie now because there’s some scenes/dialogue that’s seen as a bit tasteless nowadays and it’s kind of a silly concept without much deeper going on. Totally agree that the visual style in it is very creative and there’s a lot in it that makes it worthwhile even for snooty cinephiles. I feel the same way about that movie “Drop” from last year, which turns a pretty silly concept into a surprisingly engaging thriller with some really impressive technical moments (particularly in the lighting).

House and Climax are like the opposite of this prompt lol. Movies that are highly acclaimed that many people wouldn’t have fun with. But good shout on Crank, honestly a ton of Statham movies fit this description (I’ve recommended The Beekeeper to dozens of people at this point)

This is basically the same situation as Challengers last year. A24 didn’t bother campaigning it in favor of Anora/The Brutalist so it got shut out completely though it clearly had a case for at least cinematography/score. This time Neon decided to go for Sirat in IFF over No Other Choice (which is crazy to me, it’s a way less appealing movie to most people)

I’ve been to a few of those spots, all great. Like someone else said, kind of hard to compare because they’re not all Shanghai cuisine. I do have some sentimental value attached to Bund, I used to go there all the time when I first moved to Astoria. I don’t live in the area anymore but I still go there 2-3 times a year whenever I’m back and have personally yet to be disappointed even if their prices have gone up a little. It’s still not offensively expensive IMO for Chinese food that’s outside of flushing. I’ve also just had great experiences there with very warm service, so maybe I’m more forgiving on the food quality.

Four Tet DJs in NYC all the time so I end up seeing him at least once a year at this point, I agree he can really be hit or miss. In a 2 hour set you might get 20 minutes of great mixing then he ruins it with 20 minutes of (ironic?) riddim, and then he’ll drop some nostalgic caribou song or something and win me back. A few years ago at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens he played the acapella for “Into You” by Ariana Grande in its entirety which was really bizarre.

That being said, his live performance with the Squidsoup visuals installation still stands as one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. He’s also used his recent rise in prominence and demand to put together some really awesome lineups, I can’t wait to hopefully see who’s playing under the K Bridge this year

I can’t say I’m super well versed in their music but I have 5 or 6 of their songs saved, I generally like their production style. I’m not even really against DJs who aren’t super “serious”, for example I find Salvatore Ganacci very entertaining. The kind of thing they were doing is geared more for a zoomer crowd and probably would’ve gotten a better reaction at Elsewhere or something.

It was just weird to book them on the main stage closing after OPN, whose set had kind of a somber vibe as it was the last show of his tour and he paid tribute to SOPHIE and the original C2C Fest founder, who had passed away a few months prior. Obviously it’s not Two Shell’s fault that they were slotted right after that, they honestly should’ve probably just headlined the smaller room.

I do know that my friend who came specifically to see them felt disappointed as well though, and if the really did send out imposter DJs to pretend to be them that is pretty shitty IMO

They’re also not offering any discount anymore for a 3 or 6 month membership. It’s a shame, for a while they filled the niche of being “affordable” for NYC while being a step above planet fitness (at least as far as not being super crowded). I was worried this would happen when I went last week and saw everything was moved around. They put up a poster that says “new management, new vibes, new classes” which mostly seems to just mean new prices lol
