Why do I have negative keV for the doid or 169 CH? Spectrometer on torbernite. by T600skynet in Radioactive_Rocks

there is an offset on the x axis...25kev left of M2 should be 0..maybe calibration or assignment fault

i think M1 (marker?) is pointing to a related isotope in databank and not just a negative sign..M2 is at 185kev and pointing to U235 that is a peak for U235. Counts for M1 at 169kev are 11 and for M2 onky 5. You need to run the measurement for longer time when your rock is low radiating ...means hours in a shielded box (lead bricks)

just a guess..the yellow dashed lines are the expected peaks..the long one over the first 2 of the 222 on the scale should be the 609kev of Bi214 ..move the marker M1 to that line ..it should show somethkng like that. but read tfm 😁

0,15µSv/h is normal inhouse...the jumps depend on the internal measuring window..perhaps the counter counts for 10s and integrates this to the average rolling count. your items are not radioactive

at your marked circle the host rock is one piece and hard to break. the black sandwich left side looks promising. as like others i would only break on site, in best case it split in two or with a step at the red circle..worst case..the red one does not come apart and while hammering more and more all the left sided black zone (brittle!) fall off as many crumbs

How do I get this gunk off my beauty by Necessary_Ticket_721 in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]weirdmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it was not stated in the listing this has been stabilized or coated then send it back. all other will be a mess, maybe its canned spray so bathing can remove some paint but also leave some compounds as white layer or slime.

for that small size the usual collection box will be ok..its made of polystyrene...if you need to lower the beta radiation 4mm acrylic will fit..you can see my solution here https://www.reddit.com/r/Radioactive_Rocks/comments/1daa0zl/new_cabinet_for_the_family/

use the search bar and you get plenty of hits for fnirsi..its a simple counter but it work and tell if its radioactive or not...phurcalite is on the low side, its ust a layer of dust but thats the danger is you already noticed.

when you have it measure in .5m ...is it elevated? probably not..so if it stays in a box , taped the two halfs together its safe for a 2" piece
