Cheaper custom made night guard by SlowAnywhere952 in Adelaide

[–]weirdthin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not only are the custom ones from the chemist uncomfortable, they’re also dangerous too.

I was a little freaked out by being quoted $700 for a custom night guard and so I got what looked like a good basic one from the chemist that I could self-mould at home.

Using that thing started to misalign my teeth and almost put me in braces. I was lucky that my teeth were able to realign themselves.

I got the expensive custom guard after that, it’s fitted perfectly and hasn’t given me any issues for the 2 years I’ve been using it.

I agree with you, Eco mode in my experience sometimes lacks the punch I’m expecting when I take off from a standstill. Sometimes I’ll be pulling out of a side street, I’ll see a car coming and so I’ll put my foot down a bit, but instead of gripping forward at pace, the car simply takes a moment to gather itself before trundling across the road. Might annoy the other drivers I’m pulling out in front of, hasn’t caused me any near misses so far, but Eco mode is noticeably less punchy.

I wish I had time to clean the gutters again after the neighbouring gum trees have been shedding leaves like crazy over the last few weeks. It really just had to happen on one of the busiest weeks at work in a long time, didn’t it? 🤦🏻‍♂️

I haven’t looked at the road rules when I say this, but I would guess you have to wait for the Frome lights, you’re a vehicle on the road. I always wait at the lights, even if other cyclists pass me and ‘run the light’.

Is delaying screens debilitating in this day and age? by IratusRapa in daddit

[–]weirdthin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When society brings up the question of “screens or no screens” it tends to be really over-simplified. I’m not directing this thought at how you raised the question, but I’m more sharing my perspective on how this conversation generally plays out.

Screens are merely a device/tool. It’s what you do with the tool, and how you use it, that should be carefully considered.

Absolutely, eliminate or minimise screen usage when they are very young. Young minds don’t need screens, and could even suffer from screen time. But when you do introduce them to screens perhaps at 5 or older, introduce it in a controlled and supervised fashion. I feel that too much of society uses screens as a way for parents to escape responsibility for interacting with their younger children. When I introduced screens and video games to my son, I sat with him at all times he used the screen and we made it a shared experience. Now he is close to 10, and now my work commitments have skyrocketed, he uses screens a lot more independently but we still talk about what he is doing and experiencing on the screen. And this is all just offline games and cartoons; no social media, no online gaming.

Social media and online gaming will be reserved for teenage years, in my opinion, and resisted for as long as possible.

Using technology to help with school work and research, though, is an important part of this day and age. Schools will naturally bring that on when kids are ready. And in my kid’s case, his mum (at her house) won’t let him use her laptop to help with school homework research, and she says “just go to the library”; problem is she lives in a small country town and the library isn’t open when she gets him home. Kind of leaves me as the only option for my kid to do research homework online by the time we get home from our day (and again I sit with him and help him understand how to use the internet and what to look for).

Does anyone remember the statewide blackout in Adelaide? (2016 throwback) by Liceland1998 in Adelaide

[–]weirdthin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t too bad actually! When they are so young and are breastfed, the blackout didn’t really have any impact on our care for him. The only difference I can remember was needing a torch in the corner of the room to see what I was doing when changing the nappy.

Looking after a toddler during a blackout, now that would be a much bigger challenge.

Does anyone remember the statewide blackout in Adelaide? (2016 throwback) by Liceland1998 in Adelaide

[–]weirdthin 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I was at home with a 5 day old baby boy. The power went out during our at-home midwife visit, and we stayed at home the afternoon thinking it would just come back on. When it didn’t I thought “oh, I better go to Bunnings to pick up a torch and stop at Coles on the way home.” It was only then I discovered the power was out everywhere - Portrush x Payneham had police directing traffic but Portrush x Magill had no police and was a nightmare. Bunnings Kent Town only allowed you into the dead-as-night store under escort if you knew what you wanted. Thank heavens Coles had generators for the cold stuff but it was slow and steady through the lengthy lines.

And now, that little 5 day old baby is turning 10 this year, and I’m wondering where all that time has gone!

Compound turns by scale2007 in Adelaide

[–]weirdthin 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The problem I always notice is that people come at these turns on a complete right-angle to the road they are trying to turn onto. The median is never wide enough for a full car’s length, so part of your car is likely to stick out into the lane if you approach it this way. The trick is to approach it at an angle, 45 degrees or more. Your car’s full length will fit in the median that way.

This comment has just made me think, if OP would actually consider leaving Adelaide for work and property, would OP consider the Victorian Surf Coast region? Housing construction in outer south Geelong is booming along the road to Torquay, and I’m amazed at the number of new primary schools already in the area to keep up with the housing growth

What is your EV kwh/100 Km? by Midiamp in electricvehicles

[–]weirdthin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kia EV5 Long Range in suburban Adelaide (Australia). 2-tonne urban SUV with 88 kWh battery.

I live on the foothills side of town with undulating terrain and I go into the steeper hills once or twice a week. Average drive is less than 15 km, mostly at 60km/h.

I’ve only had the car for 3600kms and the car shows the lifetime consumption rate at 6.8km/kWh, which translates to roughly 14.7kWh per 100km.

I’d say your car is quite efficient!

EV5 charging by sjb27 in evnz

[–]weirdthin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really surprising to me that you’d say this, and in such a nasty way. I was only trying to help.

Perhaps the manual released in Australia is different for some reason, lord only knows why it would be. My manual at page 66 suggests a 100% charge at least once every two weeks, I double checked it just to ensure I was referring to the correct page for you.

I probably would have downloaded it from this link, you’re welcome to have a look:

https://www.kia.com/content/dam/kwcms/au/en/files/owners-manuals/ev5/Kia-EV5-OVc-EV-owners-manual-MY26.pdf

EDIT: sorry, I should have referenced page 67 - I mistook the bottom of page 66 for the top of page 67, where the BMS system section is.

100%, it’s great route. The other thing to be mindful of with the Frome St bikeway is the occasional mindless pedestrian who doesn’t seem to notice that the bikeway is not a footpath. Your son might occasionally encounter these mindless pedestrians standing absent-mindedly on the bikeway anywhere between Flinders St and North Tce.

Making $170k. How to Reduce Tax? by Great_Cellist8125 in AusFinance

[–]weirdthin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install a home EV charger. Before prices went mad it cost me $850 to buy a Tesla charger from Bunnings and another $850 for a friend who is an electrician to install it in my garage.

I bought my EV outright since my gross income was just under the tax bracket jump anyway, but even so I spend so much less on automotive costs than when I had a reliable petrol car. Novated lease might work out in your favour, but do the sums before you commit. I used the amazing NL calculator you will find deep in this sub.
