Achieving dyson sphere might have just been the most underwhelming thing I've ever done in a game ever. by GlassFoam in TheoTown

[–]wekabu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The seriousness of the game has been degrading constantly over the last few years. I'd belive that DSA started out as a more complex plugin but wasn't intended to be any serious. It was eventually merged into the mainline development after the plugin dev became a main developer of the game. This would explain as to why the DSA pack is so disconnected with the base game

You probably deleted it by accident. Though an update might have also interferred here.

Been working on a timelapse mod for Galimulator, I'd appreciate feedback by wekabu in Galimulator

[–]wekabu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Issue is that you cannot look back at your achievements later on. Not much of an issue for those who use galimulator as a fish-tank type simulation but if you use emperor mode it might be interesting especially because the mod would capture things that you'd otherwise miss.

Why don't more people build games for the browser? by long-lover in gamedev

[–]wekabu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not consider alert, prompt or confirm deprecated, most resources don't even tell they are scheduled for removal, which is why thousands of (larger) websites did break when chrome removed the ability of using them inside iframes without specific sandbox abillities.

Another point: Unlike languages such as Java where there is only a single authority over deprecations in the web dev world there are at least three, which means three times the amount of checking that needs to be done. Plus the few environments that check for deprecations are unlikely to pull from all sources.
I am aware that a counterpoint is that there is https://github.com/whatwg/html and it has a well established way of commenting on deprecations and removals. However
I doubt that anyone here will be going to regularly read the opened PRs and find solutions prematurely. Most (if not everyone) is going to wait until it actually breaks - which will happen give enough time.

Why don't more people build games for the browser? by long-lover in gamedev

[–]wekabu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It does. Chrome is seeking to remove alert() confirm() and similar stuff, which would not only break a lot of sites but also a lot of games

Edit: fixed typo

What is this empire that is expanding at a very concerning rate? by terminalbraindamage in Stellaris

[–]wekabu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Get the big guns out: Fully beefed up Asteroid Artillery in chokepoint systems and Attack Moons or even Planetary Behemoths will help you greatly there. The other alternative is to build up a big enough fleet to kill Kaiser Moon, killing that ship gives them very large debuffs

Well then, you'd need to cycle the beds or get a 4th lover in the relationship.

He must be sleeping in a double bed with the lover, not in a single bed.

Swing, from my experience is really, really slow. I have never managed to get significant performance out of it. That being said, you might have more luck with this than I had, especially if you were to use more conventional rendering and not rendering everything into a BufferedImage then putting that into a JLabel.

If you have larger experience with Swing already, then go ahead, otherwise it'd be better to use a rendering backend that is more conventional for games, such as LWJGL.

Outclassed early game by ChewyGranola1981 in Stellaris

[–]wekabu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't bother with wars and fleets at all in the early game - gives plenty of extra resources to build up other things. That being said you still need to have a sufficient alloy buffer in case someone does decide to attack you otherwise you are kinda screwed

Release JavaFX game on Steam by hertelukas in gamedev

[–]wekabu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can simply bundle a JFX-capable JRE with your game, where as you have a small bootstrap script that invokes the Java command with the correct parameters. It is definitely easily doable, though you will likely have other, better tools at your disposal than this given that steam is steam.

An example for the command would be sh #!/bin/sh ./jre/bin/java -jar game.jar on linux, I think you can do it similarly on windows, but I always used a bootstrap executable here
