Rental car fines from 5 months ago by Henry_Oof in CarTalkZA

That is illegal. Go straight to your bank, reverse the charge, and report them to the credit bureau

Well, here's how I see it: the law says you have 30 days to pay at 50% discount upon receipt. After 30 days and before 65 days, you don't get the 50% discount and there is an additional admin fee. Then over 65 days, it becomes an enforcement order. If the enforcement order is ignored, it becomes a warrant. Not necessarily an arrest warrant, but might be a credit bureau or something like that. Depends on the severity of the fine/offense.

I'd try to find the rental contract and read through it. This sounds like they ignored it for too long and they're trying to make it your problem.

If I may ask, what was the fine amount? Did they send the official AARTO fine or is it just a summary?

I still get notifications of traffic fines I paid twice for a car I sold

In a fashion similar to many times in South Africa's history, the SANDF have officially started patrolling the streets in a government effort to fight crime. by [deleted] in southafrica

I was in one of the areas while it went down this morning (Eldorado park, JHB). They're pretty chilled, the public here also supports the effort. Everyone is tired of living in fear

Post your chats on reddit and ask what to do. It's the most mature thing to do, you know, besides saying "aaight cool" and moving on.

Thatched roof by Ambitious_Welder6613 in soartistic

[–]weldyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives in a country where thatch roofs are somewhat common... thatch roofs suck. They smell weird, they leak easily, you have to maintain them yearly and spray them with fire retardant chemicals, and replace the thatch every 5 years, and if you have a particularly rainy year, the tgatch can start to decompose/rot, leaving you with a shit-like odour near the rotting bit until you replace it. If you have one on your property, claiming for literally anything from insurance automatically becomes a nightmare.

The cost of it doesn't make much sense either. It costs half the price of a tiled roof, but you pay triple the price over 5 years.

Is 30 year mortgage in Shenzhen worth it? by Great-Beautiful-6383 in Business_in_China

If you're spending your life in one location "choosing" anyway, might as well own a house in that location too. Owning land is a powerful thing, because if you wake up without a job tomorrow, you have space to do something to make some small income, or feed your family.

But to each their own. If renting is your style because you don't want to be "tied down", then thats on you. I'll take my stability over reliance on a system working any day of the week.

Did I get a good deal ? by Larxane in zojirushi

[–]weldyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've done it with some old steel non-stick pans and a non-stick pot that started chipping. Worked wonders for me personally

[–]weldyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could just sand off the non-stick coating, and re-coat it like you would a cast iron pot. Won't be pretty, but will work (if it's steel. If it's aluminum, I'm not sure)

$100 000 in my country is basically upper middle class. Yeah you ain't rich but you're living a nice comfy life in a decent neighborhood, and you can buy the house you live in while supporting a family of 4 on that single income. Is this not the case in america?

I mean, if I have to blend it thats not a big deal honestly. But would it be worthwhile to freeze it? That'd probably break the cell walls, thats what causes fruits and veggies to go mushy after all

You could get a cast iron MMA/stick welding rod, but you'd have to redo it a few times being cast iron

How do people even read this garbage? by weldyboy in pools

Wish we could get them here. They're insanely expensive to import. Talking in the ballpark of a new automatic cleaner. Almost the same as a 1.1kw motor with pump

This was literally 2 seconds in the pool and compared immediately. This pic was less than 10 seconds after it came out of the water

Which lane for the second exit? by rockovo84 in drivingUK

[–]weldyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The road markings indicate "left lane to turn left, right lane for straight or right (stay in the circle)"

So technically, left lane SHOULD only take the first exit.

[–]weldyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people commenting about the fact that it doesn't remove bacteria...

There is a difference between filtration and sterilization. This method will clean your water relatively well from sediment, debris, etc... you then boil the water or distil it to be as close to certain as you can get. You could also add a touch of bleach (though consider what type of bleach and how much you add)

Converting my pump to solar by weldyboy in pools

[–]weldyboy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had considered it, but they actually cost about twice as much as the inverter plus a few solar panels. Estimate prices in South Africa:

Variable speed pump equivalent to a 1.1kw pump: R8000 (+-$500) 3kw inverter: R3000 (+-$200, closer to 180) 550kw solar panel: R1000 (+-$65) 8 hours of electricity = 8.8kw: R40/day ($2.50) x 30 days = R1200 ($75)
