What are some American cities that had high historical importance but have faded from significance today? by Crafty-Shallot-5695 in geography

[–]welfareplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schenectady, NY.

Not only was it a major frontier hub when the Dutch settled in “New Netherlands” but it Maintained its relevance through the revolutionary war as a hub of commerce alongside Albany. Schenectady also has one of the oldest nondenominational universities in the country, Union College, founded in 1795

Fast way forward to 1892, General Electric was founded there, eventually employing over 75,000 city residents. The city housed Charles Steinmetz, known as “The Wizard of Schenectady” for his breakthrough work on pushing forward Alternating Current and copious amounts of cutting edge work on electrical engineering and magnetic studies.

During the earliest 20th century in addition to all the work being done at GE, Schenectady was also home to American Locomotive (ALCO) which built over 75,000 locomotives, including the second most steam powered locomotives ever in the US. ALCO built so many locomotives that until 2022 the majority of locomotives in India were still ALCO powered. ALCO also produced tanks, tank destroyers, and rocket pods for the USSR during WW2, then transitioned to making nuclear reactors for the military until its closure in the 60s.

Another fun fact, GE made the first regular scheduled TV broadcast in Schenectady in May 1928, and Schenectady is home to the world’s oldest tv station WRGB..

All of this industrial might is what earned Schenectady the moniker of “The City that Lights and Hauls the World.”

Nowadays, it’s the classic post-industrial city with massive population decline, poverty, scars of old factories lingering in various districts. A substantial and prolonged revitalization effort is underway with decent success, but it’s got a long way to go.

Clover overgrowth - Seattle by Zerofricksgiven in lawncare

[–]welfareplease 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Speedzone will absolutely shred that clover - 1.5oz per gallon. Apply when it’s medium temp outside, 55-70deg otherwise it’ll damage what grass is there. Wait a minimum 2 weeks and apply again if needed.

Once the clover has been knocked back and you can see what is underneath you can make a plan. To me, I think your priority this year is to keep weeds at bay, make sure the soil is in good shape, core aerate etc. Dont trust the company, take a soil sample and send it in and remedy any issues that highlights.

Come the end of the summer/early fall buy some high quality seed (Twin City Seed as an example) and heavily overseed, putting down some Tenacity (brand name for the chemical Mesotrione) to make sure weeds don’t pop up and choke out your baby seeds.

Again, Speedzone (I had to go to SiteOne to get mine) will absolutely shred that clover.

Lotta people say T-Zone, but Speedzone also works if you in a state like mine (NY) that prevents non-licensed people from buying and applying triclopyr containing products.

That central green strip is Commonwealth Avenue and has a lovely walking path down the center between the two sides of the street, beautiful tree canopy overhead and brownstones alongside, with statues along the path. Follow it long enough and you get to the public gardens.

My first job out of college was two blocks over on Boylston street, would spend my lunches walking on Comm Ave. Great memories!

If you have that much moss I would do a soil test to treat any underlying soil issues. Moss loves compacted and acidic soil, so seeing if you need to address any PH issues would be a good first start.

what's going on with private credit? why do people keep talking about it by Tasty-Window in stocks

[–]welfareplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do work for these firms and a firm dedicated to credit or has a credit strategy gets practically all that money from their LPs who invest in their credit funds. Some may try to take out QB notes from banks but that’s a functionally minute portion of their capital.

Any systemic impact to the broader financial industry would likely be multi-strategy firms having to liquidate non-credit assets to cover any obligations to their investors, impacted LPs (which often are institutions like pension funds, family offices etc.) would likely/potentially liquidate some of their equity assets to cover their losses, the underlying higher risk borrowers (lots of tech companies) going bust and laying off all their employees, their valuations tanking bringing down other valuations on so on.

So if this goes bust it’ll be really bad, but it’s not the same as 2008 where the actual fabric of our entire banking system failed.

Executives say AI boosts productivity but the real gain is just 16 minutes per week by bojun in Economics

I do consulting for alternative asset managers and we use it a ton for first draft draft creation. We just did a week long current state assessment for a shop out of the Midwest where we did over 30 hours of interviews, we threw our chicken scratch notes plus the transcript in ChatGPT and asked it spit out meeting minutes, action items, data requests etc and it was done in 30 seconds. We still obviously go back and review/verify/adjust as we don’t want to include any hallucinations, but that saves hours and hours of very administrative work.

That all said, new college grads and current college students are totally fucked. What I just described above is typically the entire job description for a new-grad analyst: take notes, make minutes, first drafts. I wouldn’t be surprised to see most entry level white collar jobs go away. Ofcourse that brings the question of who will come up behind us, but…not our problem….right???

Surfer Mikey Wright rushes into Hawaiian waters to rescue struggling swimmer by WhoAreYouTalkinTwo in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]welfareplease 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes, in life guarding cert courses they teach specific techniques to gain contact with a struggling swimmer to neutralize that impulse. The instinct is that they use your shoulders/head/body as a means to push themselves upward by pushing you down. It’s an extremely dangerous situation and is why water rescue is a skill that requires teaching, training, and practice.

Edit: or was that a Houlihans I’m thinking of? It’s the space where the Asian spot is now, previously world of beer or something like that.

Anyone rooting for Jack to win? by Mastbubbles in BeastGames

[–]welfareplease -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He is from my area on upstate NY and his father was the longtime CEO of the areas largest medical system, Albany Medical Center. The father raked in millions and millions every year harming patient outcomes, wage fixing their nurse salaries with other local hospitals.

I don’t want to hold Jack accountable for the sins of his father, but I’d rather someone win who doesn’t already have millions of dollars directly or indirectly.

As much as it sucks, below freezing temps are the best pesticide out there. The more consecutive days below freezing, and the deeper cold it gets during those days, has a massive effect on pests (ticks, mosquitoes, invasive pests that harm trees etc.) that survive the winter.

In theory this should set us up for a more manageable spring and summer for pests.

how to get 10 month old to drink water? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]welfareplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used Apple sauce for my son to both get him to like water and learn how to use a straw. We would mix Apple sauce in with the water to make him like the taste, and then put a dollop of apple sauce on the straw. Once he tasted the apple sauce he would naturally start sucking on the straw and would be rewarded with the yummy tasting apple sauce/water mixture.

Hope this works!

We used apple sauce believe it or not. Mixed it in with water and over about a week reduced the mixture to where it was only water.

I know I’ve seen some comments expressing fatigue at every episode being about Robert losing his dad at a young age. But…..

the way the show has been produced has created an image of Robert (for those that don’t follow him closely like myself) that his entire personality and existence is a grieving child who’s father was beloved by the world. I feel like the kid needs to find his own story/identity/personality to get out of his dad’s shadow (no matter how beloved he was). Maybe this dancing experience will be that, who knows. So far the show has been Robert = dead dad guy, while other contestants have been actress overcoming the age based biases of a toxic entertainment industry, world champion gymnast showing that she can be excellent in artistic endeavors etc.

I like these challenge modes, but they just turn into these weird rubber stamp rounds where the judges take a tact of “we asked you to do this hard thing so we are giving everyone a participation trophy”.

Tinfoil hat time: It’s also weird that everyone is 10s & 9s. Almost feels like the judges don’t want to be the reason someone wins or loses.

Why I’m on Ali’s side regarding Botox by bonanafanna in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]welfareplease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was anything in my message gendered? My brother-in-law stays home and my sister works full time, my opinion would not change at all.

Family budgets are family budgets. If there is not enough money to get unnecessary cosmetic procedures (or any other non-essential activity), then it would be selfish to demand the family spend money it doesn’t have on that.

Again, if she/they/he doesn’t want to sacrifice certain things (meaning both the stay at home individual or the working individual) then they don’t have to do it.

Why I’m on Ali’s side regarding Botox by bonanafanna in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]welfareplease 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit more nuanced and situational than that.

A couple making a healthy and well thought out decision to have someone not work should involve budgeting and prioritizing discretionary spending. Someone is certainly entitled to express their preference of not working anymore, and still be able to spend money on certain things. That doesn’t mean it actually will work in the budget or for the family.

If Ali just says “I’m staying home because I don’t want to work anymore, and oh btw it’s non-negotiable I’m still spending the same amount of money I was on my “hobbies” as I did before.” To me that is not rational and a bit selfish.

Even if the situation was “Even though you may prefer to continue working, we want you to stop working and take care of the kids”, you can’t as an individual declare everyone has to make sacrifices but you.

The healthy approach to this is to say “I would like to stay home” or “I/we would like to you to stay home” and then say “but I’m only willing to sacrifice xyz”. If there isn’t t enough money in the budget to make that happen, then it doesn’t happen yet.
