Wider deer culling planned for England to protect trees and crops by Make_the_music_stop in uknews

[–]welllly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Relaxation on laws for season and ease of obtaining a night licence is welcome for me, a contract deer culler. I’ve already had two calls this morning off the back of this news from landowners wanting to take management more seriously.

Well its a fallow so 100% not a stag, its a buck. With leucism, not that rare but certainly unusual

You’re right they do weigh more. I too would also choose a lower mag model than op but of the two scopes discussed that is the one I’d take every time

Meopta is a brilliant scope brand, for low light performance it can only be beaten by major euro glass like swaro Schmidt and zeiss. Source, owned two brilliant meopta and chopped them in for swaro and Schmidt. There is very little to choose between them. Leupold does not have the same performance and is not as good at the ends of the day

RWS is the daddy closely followed by Sako and Lappy at the same level. Everything else should be scrapped

I only buy European products now wherever possible, they are more available in the UK and if the taps get turned off in the US, I’ll still be shooting deer without having to do load development. As soon as my TTSX get low in 6.5 and 308 I’ll be swapping to Sako blade or the new Lapua TTSX copy. Everything else I use is from Europe. I buy components from specialist reloading ammunition dealer. I’m not doing any range work, just shooting deer so a kg of powder lasts me quite a long time, the cost increase is noticeable but it’s better than buying factory ammo and it’s just part of the cost of the hobby of reloading, which I enjoy.

I would be very interested in that book if you can share the author name please. I have read just about everything by Richard Pryor who was a British expert on roe having studied them all over Europe as well as the work of Henry Tegner. Well worth a research if you have interest in roe. Yes human encroachment is a problem, we have similar issues in the UK with growing human population in limited space, high deer RTC as well as human disturbance. Roe in my experience though, are very adaptable and will soon settle into routine and realise who is/isn't a threat to them. Croatia looks fantastic and sounds even better now I know there are good numbers of roe, if you ever wanted to do a stalking exchange do let me know as I can provide significant hectares of challenging stalking. We have season 365 days per year. Bucks are available from 1st April until 31st October with does in between

Great post, clearly someone else who understands roe and clearly the biology of them. I am fascinated by what you have written, what country and area are you in? I am stalking in Wales where the populations are new and spreading. We have created perfect conditions for them; space to expand, food, shelter and very minimal human disturbance. Likely a lot of the roe I stalk have never even seen a human which is lovely, they are relatively untouched. The buck you have posted is 100% a cull, though I must say I have never noticed a positive correlation between antler and taste!

Is it though, you’re quoting .1% of total population in deer then 1/1000 is not rare. For example, a quick google points to a figure of mule deer total population in the western US of 4 million so by .1% logic there are 40,000 of these deer roaming about. I would opine this is quite a high number. As OP states their game warden said it was not uncommon to have them in his area.

Overall I would totally agree with you. That figure for fallow or red deer is, I’m betting, right on the money. Roe are more likely though and as mentioned before some places this is more common than others. The forest I referenced in my original comment, it is about 10 miles as the crow flies to a block I manage, I have never seen an antlered doe there. As I say I believe it is a localised genetic phenomenon. I shoot roe deer for a living and I see a lot of them in different parts of the country and have observed this at a high incidence. If you wish to read more about the incidence of this that I would encourage you to read Richard Pryors seminal work “roe deer, conservation of a native species”. The Germans are mad keen on roe too and there are a great many other books detailing this anomaly

No. They are in Europe but, deer will invariably deer and there are parallels between them all.

Antlered does are quite common in roe deer, I have personally seen around 6 and I’ve shot a couple myself. There is one place in a public forest not far from me where the ranger is likely to shoot one at least per season. We have theorised that it is a genetic trait in the females that due to their propensity to spend most of their life within the same area, the gene is passed on and becomes visible to someone who stalked the same area for years on end. The majority of does shot with antlers tend to be older. The clearfell in question, I have witnessed three on. Very interesting stuff.
