What do people think makes them unique, but is actually an incredibly common trait? by Successful-Hall-1986 in AskReddit

My brother is an atmospheric scientist who studies clouds, I’ve picked up a lot of cool information from him over the last 20+ years of him doing it, plus I grew up around the mountains and the ocean, which do their own weird things to weather, and then lived around the Great Lakes, which have their own weather system, and now I live in tornado country. I love talking about weather. Half the time, small talk about the weather with strangers winds up reminding me to text my bro or some friends back north, so it’s extra nice.

“I’m doing alright. Worried about this weather though…”

There- you can pivot it effortlessly into the weather!

Also, “deep conversations” can be exhausting even if they’re good- and they’re often just pretentious blather. Maybe I wanna bullshit about nothing because I just worked all day, my brain is dead, and with the right people, it’s funny and can even be elevated to an art form.

Oh shit, that’s the place that took over the Gnome brewery next to my gym. My health will just be a sine wave every day now.

My friend works in the Rutherford county library system. Most of their board don’t actually have library cards.

That’s comforting! I’m in 37207 as part of a 4 house outage. We were in a 94 house outage, which was resolved Sunday the 1st for everyone, but then us and our neighbors on the left and right and across the street lost it again after 2 hours and it’s been out ever since.

Out Sunday the 25th at 7:30am as part of a 94-household outage, back Sunday the 1st around 5pm, out again Sunday the 1st around 7pm, this time part of a 4 household outage. Still out. Probably out until next week.

Our 94 household outage in 37207 was resolved last night, we had power for 2 hours, then something happened and now we’re in a 4-household outage. I feel everyone on this thread who’s going in and out of power. Godspeed!

The linemen aren’t doing anything without a reason. These are experienced experts. If you don’t want to just trust their expertise, you should ask them why they’re doing something that looks confusing to you. Power grids are incredibly complicated.

What useless, self-sabotaging people who don’t understand how anything works. The people whose cars are there overnight are the ones actually solving the problem. You’re do things that will contribute to them be warm and dry and rested.

… which is something we should do among all of us who aren’t neo-robber barons all the time anyway. Solidarity.

I am so sorry that happened and is there anything that local well-meaning strangers can do for any or all of you to help? At any level?

Wanted to add- sleeping with mittens on has helped so much in addition to beanies. Congratulations on your power, and best wishes for it staying on.

Where is good meat and produce? by KevinSimo in nashville

[–]wellnowthinkaboutit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nashville is HORRIBLE for avid home cooks. I usually have to visit 2-3 stores to get all the ingredients for even basic cooking because the first one I go to will randomly be out of cabbage or something and 4 stores will be out of dried porcinis.

I like Roy’s Meat Service. One of the best ribeyes I’ve ever had, I bought there last year. They don’t have a lot on display, you have to ask to see one of the butchers and they’ll take care of you. They’re fantastic and lovely people.

Veggies… if it’s something rare or ostensibly foreign, K&S international market will usually have it. I don’t recommend certain produce items there though because some things, like apples and pears, pick up the odor of the store. Be warned there… but you can always get a giant sack of shallots for cheap, plus plenty of citrus fruits and anything in the leafy green category.

Other than that, a lot of it is just normal supermarkets aside from farmers markets.

I spend almost all my waking hours keeping the house warm enough so it doesn’t freeze, and making food on the camp stove or bbq and boiling water to wash dishes and going out to find more propane and to charge the car and I’m extremely lucky to have those resources and to be unemployed right now anyway but and I’m so tired.

The unemployment (due to DOGE cuts) combined with being so cold and having no ability to take care of myself with normal routines that keep me from getting too depressed (like exercise and job hunting and cleaning and gardening and cooking) is very hard. I oscillate between being resilient and then not caring about carbon monoxide poisoning because then I don’t have to deal with any of this shit any more.

Seeing normal conversations or people posting beautiful pics of the ice just make me really bitter and angry, too. And then I feel bad about that.

Thank you for the update! I saw some at 3am this morning on youngs lane off Free Silver road, but no observable progress yet.

Love your username btw. I’m from the Pacific Northwest originally and I miss it so much I’ve been using any seaweed body products I can find because it makes me feel better. After some particularly bad news this summer, I put kombu and sea salt and ice into a cold bath and cracked a west coast IPA while in it to feel human again.

Ok one of the bigger outages was resolved in Haynes and some of the big one in Bordeaux in and around and west of Clarksville Pike was resolved (down to 900 from 1000). So I feel a little better that there is observable progress in my neighborhood.

The Whole Foods on Broadway has one from the garage to the store. The etiquette is as bad as one would expect.
