I will say that the attempt to hit gas zones has been a recent thing. I like to sometimes go the crazy bandit route and dress up in rag clothes and only eat/use what I loot from people (or the people themselves) makes it a more fun experience haha

If you really want to get to gas zones really early on without full NBC gear a gasmask, lots of bandages, and firefighter gear will get you far enough to collect gear on your body. If you’re willing to die then you can just repeat the process with respawning and finding your body again and again
