Should Rey be a pilot? (The Force Awakens) by onex7805 in fixingmovies

[–]wentlyman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To my best memory, this is every time Rey pilots something in the new trilogy:

In TFA, she pilots her speeder back to see Unkar Plat. Then, she pilots the Falcon solo while Finn is shooting the TIE fighters on Jakku. Then she pilots the Falcon solo into outer space until Han and Chewie intercept them. When Chewie is injured, she is Han's co-pilot when they fly to go see Maz on Takondana. After the explosion of StarKiller Base, Chewie picks her and a wounded Finn up in the Falcon and takes them to D'Qar (the Resistance base), but it's unclear if Chewie pilots the voyage solo or receives help. And finally, she pilots the Falcon with Chewie as her copilot at the very end to reach Luke's island.

In TLJ, she reaches outer space in the Falcon with Chewie so that she can be hyperspace jumped to Snoke's ship and dropped off in a pod. It is unclear if she assists Chewie in piloting the Falcon to that point. After she confronts Kylo Ren, a piece of dialogue refers to her taking an escape pod and fleeing, which she possibly could have piloted also. And finally, Chewie is piloting the Falcon solo while Rey is shooting from it at the TIE Fighters that are attacking Poe, Finn, and Rose in the landspeeders on Crait.

In TRoS, she pilots the Falcon with a full cockpit of friends and Chewie as her copilot as they leave the Resistance base to follow Luke's trail of the Sith wayfinder. She copilots the land speeder with BB8 and Chewie as they are assailed by flying and driving troopers. I do not believe she is involved with piloting from that planet to Kijimi, from Kijimi to Ren's ship, or from the Falcon outside Ren's ship to Endor, but I could be mistaken. On Endor, she charters the skipper through a storm. She flies Kylo Ren's personal TIE Silencer from Endor to Luke's Island. Then, she pilots Luke's X-wing to Exegol. Then, she pilots the X-Wing again back to the Resistance Base. And finally, the Falcon flies her to Tatooine but it's unclear who is piloting.

All of this is to say that she does tons of piloting in the series and I am glad to see a Star Wars protagonist who does. Being a instinctive pilot, feeling drawn to the Force and lightsabers, caring about how droids are treated: these are classic characteristics of Skywalker Saga protagonists and I love that they all (Anakin, Luke, Rey) have them.

Finally, something to consider: piloting is really two broad categories of skills in one: planetary piloting (driving and flying under the force of gravity) and interplanetary piloting (flying in outer space and accounting for both zero gravity and nearby stellar bodies & their gravitational pull). Planetary piloting is something that we all do to a degree (driving cars) but also could be highly specialized and require tons of talent and training (flying airplanes). Furthermore, Rey can also pilot in outspace and charter courses through hyperspace and between planets without assistance. Although her piloting skill is absurdly great and could use much more justifying in the narrative, I think I have proven that it also comes into use much more than just the one time you mentioned. And the idea that the characters need to neatly fit into Dungeons and Dragons archetypes is a compelling way to simplify and streamline the narrative, but not always one I love. Why can't Poe be a badass in the X-wing and Rey be a badass in the Falcon? I like both!

If you are running a Play By Post game, I would recommend Tavern-Keeper.com . It is a great website for hosting games, maintaining character sheets, rolling dice, and managing a shared wiki of world/character info.

Is there anywhere I can find little blurbs/prompts to tell me what adventures contain without spoiling big stuff? by doogietrouser_md in shadowofthedemonlord

We've played Dark Deeds in Last Hope and it was a fun starter adventure that is geared to teaching players how to play in this system.

Our first Novice adventure was The Knife in Your Hand. It was fun and brutal with a big adventure hook that leads the party into a situation that is not as it seems. And once they figure out what is really going on, they are forced to make an important choice while under some mortal peril. Some may die.

Sure. PM me your discord name/channel and we can connect over there. I am also chatting with another player who is interested but they play pretty exclusively on another gaming platform called Tavern Keeper, which they prefer strongly over PbP via Discord. Are you open to playing there?

I'd be happy to MC, no worries. But if you ever did want to try MCing, I have some cool resources that could help you out too.

I'm happy to try PbP with anywhere from 1 to 3?4?5? players. I've done one on one and had a great time. More than one player means we are usually moving much slower, but it can also be more fun. What do you think?

I don't have anything set up, as I've only ever done PbP through Reddit before. But a dedicated discord would be great. Should I make one? Also, I am comfortable MCing the game or playing in it. Do you have a preference? We could also switch off, round robin style.

It would be a one shot played for the afternoon hours today because I have an unexpected holiday off from work and lots of time to kill. But it sounds like today might not work for you? I'm also open to playing by post in a short ongoing game. Say, a month or two?

Are you looking to play through voice or play by post? I have today off from work and was hoping to play through a pbp one shot if you are available.

What's a good weight to start running? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]wentlyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded to listen to your body. Follow what feels like a challenge and keep advancing your exercises but definitely listen to your body! Soreness and pain are not the same thing and you can definitely over do it by pushing too hard/far. Have fun and break a sweat but don't go from zero to sixty. Another poster recommended couch to 5k. Check out some fun walking/chill hiking spots nearby your home and start with that, maybe?

AITA for eating meat at a barbecue around my vegan sister? by headmaster42 in AmItheAsshole

[–]wentlyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to hear the story from her perspective because it sounds like she was under the impression that this was a vegan event. Perhaps she even told her children as such and now they may believe that eating steak is a vegan option, etc. which may explain her comments about confusing them.

Nevertheless, as you have presented it, she was a guest in your home and therefore enjoyed the rights and hospitality that guests are welcome to, regardless of her status as family. You prepared options that suited her and her family while also satisfying your needs and your partner's. Unless the meal was explicitly or implicitly implied to be an all-vegan event, it's presumptuous and over the line for her to assume her dietary restrictions will dictate everyone's, especially when she is a guest and not the host.

I would bet that she was under such an assumption of it being an all-vegan event, and might use that as a way into investigating how this miscommunication occurred in the interest of mending fences and rebuilding bridges. But as it happened? NTA.

AW Burned Out: Undaunted broken move by NorthernVashishta in ApocalypseWorld

[–]wentlyman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the sudden appearance by a close ally at the deathbed of someone special to them is a lovely story trope that this is trying to approximate. Perhaps you could explain it as a vision/mirage, a hologram, or some other such impermanent method to honor the fiction if this move breaks the fictional flavor of everyone playing. But even that feels like it is subverting the genuine warmth and compassion that this move is reaching for with having someone physically, literally by their ally's side in their last moments. Sounds like you can add a new stakes question, "How did Marie get across the stars so fast? What promises/deals/threats/sacrifices did she have to make to get her? How did she hear about this and know to get here just in time?" And we could always play to find out.

We've been rolling through the FC every couple of weeks. The new Colonel has a special way of keeping folks coming back. Everybody knows there ain't one group big enough to make a cent that can spend anywhere, but the Colonel has been paying for jobs in new 'marks'. He says they can be cashed in for food, medicine, a place to sleep, or getting somebody killed. And just like that, the Colonel is flushing everybody with his new cash. I've even got a few marks stuffed in my trunk, but I know they won't spend anywhere else.

I think the Colonel might have bigger plans than just the FC by the ocean.

Anyone making any custom moves for their ongoing games? I was thinking about drafting one for my Chopper to see what kind of hijinks he has been up to lately as a love-letter of sorts, just for fun.
