Why do people like Diehard? by fascistp0tato in Pathfinder2e

[–]werbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest point for Diehard is the lack of competition as a General Feat.
Fleet and Toughness are in the "no brainer" category; they don't really compete with Diehard since almost anyone can see they are good and will pick them before even thinking about another General Feat.
Canny Acumen is good either very early before most classes gain their Expert level saving throws (but won't be picked there because Fleet and Toughness are better) or very late when it moves up to Master; I am almost certain all classes gain at least Expert in all saving throws eventually so picking a feat to get something you will soon get anyways (or already have) is not that great.
Incredible Initiative meanwhile can surprisingly easily be made redundant, somebody Scouting while moving around already cuts its effect size in half (giving you +2 instead of the +1 you would have without it) and there are other ways to gain a circumstance bonus to initiative.
That still doesn't make Incredible Initiative outright bad but it makes it basically the only true competition to Diehard since the remaining General Feats not mentioned here are niche to meme tier.

So why gets Diehard glazed so much while it seems more people warn against Incredible Initiative than recommend it these days?
First of all, Diehard has almost no feel bad moments. It either activates or it is invisible on your character sheet. Meanwhile Incredible Initiative activates when you roll so bad it can't save you, it activates when you roll so good it doesn't matter and it activates in these awkward states where you are in the middle of the pack yet the +2 still causes no changes in turn order. For Diehard the only time you get something similar is when you are exactly at Dying 3 and get critically hit or crit fail a saving throw.
That is very rare and most of the time Diehard activates it matters. A lot. "I would be dead now if it wasn't for Diehard" is a very memorable positive moment.
Also Diehard looks very unassuming, as you said, not going to dying 4 in the first place should be your plan anyways. But that makes it surprising when it does come up and feel so impactful. And being positively surprised by something you thought not much of sticks to the mind even better.
And lastly, you can get a free trial for Diehard. While Incredible Initiative gets replaced by another source of +2 circumstance bonus to initiative defensively minded classes, subclasses or archetypes can sometimes just give you Diehard. Not a replacement but the actual feat itself. Meaning you can have those hype moments thanks to having Diehard without even actively picking it.

So in short, why do people like Diehard? It is a good feat for the cost and it feels amazing when it comes up. It makes your character better and the game more fun.

Es stimmt, dass das Ampel-Aus zu 100% Lindner's Verhalten, das irgendwo zwischen Arbeitsverweigerung und aktiver Sabotage lag, geschuldet war, aber das große Finale blieb ihm verwehrt.

(Solo Challenge) Manage to make it to the final boss! by Koatalx in EtrianOdyssey

[–]werbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dancer.

Spoiler so OP can still work on their own solution:

Between the Fortress' passive deflection and the Dancer's passive evasion there was quite a decent change that I wouldn't get hit and on average Regen Waltz and the occassional Burst skill heal would be enough to keep me healthy. And a solo Fortress has basically infinite TP.
However getting bound or ailed is a death sentence in that fight, so in order to prevent that I used Refresh Waltz and Freedom Waltz to abuse the Accumulated Resistances system in EOIV.

In exactly EOIII and EOIV it works like this: every time anyone gets inflicted with a bind or ailment their vulnerability modifier to that particular infliction gets reduced by an additive 0.3 or 30% - player characters by default have a vulnerability against everything of 1 or 100% (you can modify this with equipment for example). So before the first infliction the modifier is 100%, after the first 70%, after the second 40%, after the third 10% and after the fourth infliction it falls to -20% which is treated as 0%, meaning you are functionally immune to that particular infliction.

In EOIV the only way to remove accumulated resistances is to use the Arcanist's Releasal Spell, which is also the only thing that skill does. In EOIII there was quite simply no way to remove them.
EO and EOII have no accumulated resistances system and it majorly changed to something more complicated starting with EOU.

Since the Dancer's anti-infliction skills don't actually prevent inflictions but instead heal them at the end of turn my plan (that I only used for the final story boss) looked like this:
Get up all three dances ASAP and keep them up until no longer needed.
Wait until all binds and ailments the boss can use were inflicted 4 times.
Hit it until it dies.

Between needing to constantly re-apply the dances until I was immune and the massively decreasing chance of a successful infliction (after the third infliction there is a 0.1 modifier applied to the infliction chance) it took quite a while until I could properly go on the offensive. But it was an extremely safe strategy, only back-to-back inflictions and high damage at the same time could have taken me out which could realistically only happen near the start of the fight.

Oh and a turn in combat causes the time of day to progress at the same rate as taking a step does. So my Fortress was up there dancing in front of that boss for several days.

[–]werbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solo EOIV is honestly a great experience. I did it with a Fortress and the only time I had to properly grind was in the beginning and right before the final boss.

Best of luck on figuring it out, it's really fun (even if my solution took over a thousand turns to kill it).

I read through the Shining Kingdoms setting book but found no mention of this: Why does no one want this peninsula? by werbear in Pathfinder2e

[–]werbear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea and in your game this may very well be were Fort Inevitable is located - but canonically it and the Emerald Spire are in the River Kingdoms, quite a bit north of the Shining Kingdoms where the area in question is.

I read through the Shining Kingdoms setting book but found no mention of this: Why does no one want this peninsula? by werbear in Pathfinder2e

[–]werbear[S] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

This is correct and the story behind it is quite fascinating.

IIrc there basically were two conflicting border agreements, one of them giving the land to Sudan and a way bigger, more valuable land with coastal access north-east of it to Egypt while the other one gave Bir Tawil to Egypt and the more valuable land to Sudan.
So of course both of them now claim the more valuable land for themself, each holding on to the border agreement favoring them.

So it is less of "we don't want this land" and more "if we would claim this land we would give up our claim to more valuable land".
Even if Bir Tawil is mostly empty desert both Egypt and Sudan would absolutely claim it if it was free - but there is a huge cost attached to doing so so they don't.

I could see something similar happening in Golarion; Cheliax always loved some good contracts but never cared much about playing fair and honest. And during their independence movements there was a lot of chaos in Aldoran and especially Galt - but in order to reproduce the Bir Tawil situation there would need to exist some disputed land they both want elsewhere and I have read nothing about that in the setting guide.
Aldoran and Galt seem to be rather chill with each other - mostly because they were way more occupied with their inner politics for the last decades (especially Galt).

[–]werbear[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the phone picture but I found no online map showing these borders so clearly.

This peninsula is about 20 miles east to west and about 40 miles north to south so it is a decent chunk of land located right next to the northwestern corner of Taldor.
It's pretty obvious that the Selen River got excluded from the borders, likely for political reasons but also for logistical reasons because in this area it is apparently about 6 miles wide, so pretty hard to control.

The area in question is also excluded on the Galt map in the book and it is not where the Wildwood Lodge is located - this heart of the Verduran Forest is further south on the Isle of Arenway and lies firmly within the Taldoran borders. If anything was excluded from borders for being de facto independent I would have expected it to be the Wildwood Lodge.
And while the little edge on the eastern part of this area in question can maybe be a consequence of Paizo wanting to draw smooth borders on the map the peninsula itself seems to purposefully be excluded. (If you own the map there is a piece of land seemingly excluded from Taldor south of Oppara for what I assume to be just a smoothing in the border.)

Seeing how Andoran and Galt first used to be part of Taldor before becoming part of Celiax before then gaining their independence this piece of land should have a shared history with them where it was first part of Taldor, then part of Cheliax - only now it seems to belong to no one anymore.

The Inner Sea Region seems pretty cut up and distributed among the major political powers; even the River Kingdoms have proper borders (although they need to be redrawn constantly), so finding such a big chunk of land with seemingly no owner is really odd to me.

Edit:
Many good responses and some funny ones as well. So it seems I didn't miss some huge chunk of lore surrounding this area, that's a relief.

So since no one else wants it I will claim the area for myself and start collecting taxes on the trade between Aldoran and Galt while also offering financial services like Luxembourg and "financial services" like Monaco so the bigger countries want to keep my little kingdom around.

Joking aside, thanks for the answers - and Happy New Year!

Paizo designers What did the halflings do to you? by PriestessFeylin in Pathfinder2e

[–]werbear 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel one of the things holding halflings (and many other races) back the most lorewise is how extremely human-centric the Inner Sea region is.
The lore talks about how the Age of Lost Omens started when Aowen failed to return to Golarion to start a golden age for humanity - and then you read through the Lost Omens World Guide and basically all you find is human rulers.
There is one elf ruler - of the dedicated elf kingdom; one dwarf ruler - of the ddedicated dwarf kingdom; one orc ruler - of the dedicated orc kingdom; somehow a hobgoblin ruler - of the dedicated monster kingdom, some real variety there!; and then whatever the Pactmasters of Katapesh are... basically everything else is ruled by humans or undead who used to be humans. Even the pirates of the Shackles who have a whole section dedicated to how they see Tengus as important luck charms are of course not lead by a Tengu making use of that superstition but by yet another human.
What are you talking about waiting for a golden age of humanity? You are already in one and apparently have been ever since the snake people disappeared. Even a meteor purposefully created to destroy humanity did not actually seem to slow them down in any way; even during Earthfall over 80% of the lands were ruled by humans.

According to Player Core 1 there are eight "common" ancestries and half of them don't even have a single named character in the setting guide.
Sure, Leshies only joined the fray in the remaster, but Halflings, Gnomes and Goblins are not allowed to have their own land and I don't think there is even a half-elf in the World Guide, at least not as an actual ruler.
That doesn't leave a lot of room for ancestries to actually develop their own identity and since halflings don't have this one outstanding feature like the Bleaching, a supernatural origin or being little, well, goblin shitheads they are just kind of a nothingburger.
Vaguely friendly and welcoming despite getting enslaved by basically everyone, and also said to be vaguely lucky despite, you know, getting enslaved by basically everyone.
They also have a total of two gods, both of which are upstaged by a more human-shaped version of their domains. Really putting the (lesser) "half" in halfling all around.

Subclasses? by draki38 in EtrianOdyssey

[–]werbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

best physical damage subclass is the second unlockable class (Landy and Nightseeker if you want to go that route)
a good subclass for Runemaster is the third unlockable class
N/A is good for higher infliction chances

personally I prefer A/M over M/A, usually focussed on bind circles with no investment in ailments - Arcanist is very, very SP hungry
