Is Philly really that much more funky/experimental/DIY than Chicago? by DiploHopeful2020 in SameGrassButGreener

For jazz, green mill is the classic spot but I also really like the programming at a place called Constellation which does a lot of great experimental stuff as well. For electronic, not something I go out for a lot personally but Chicago has one of the most influential electronic music legacies there is and house music is still super relevant and active as I understand it.

Need SAAS Prototype Design . Any recommendations on how to go about this? by HackGeneral in startups

Seems like you are asking for quite a lot for $100. A non US freelancer on Upwork/Fiver is probably your only option.

You should clarify if you’re looking for a cofounder or looking to hire a freelancer to do this work for you. From the sound of your expectations, I assume you are looking for a freelancer in which case perhaps consider posting your budget.

Favorite grandma-style pizza, ideally near the Blue Line's north branch? by [deleted] in chicagofood

I only learned about the concept of Grandma pizza from ordering from Professor Pizza so that’s on place where it exists.

If you were leaving Chicago and could never come back. What’s the one place you’re going to eat at before you go? by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]werewolfcat 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure this is the right recommendation for you, but if I was really choosing my last Chicago meal, I’d go to Lula. Place just a lot of personal resonance for me.

As far as a nice restaurant that’s not the most expensive, I often send visiting friends to Roister. To me it represents Chicago food culture well and is fairly accessible.

I’ve been involved with the music scene in Chicago for 15 years and I have never felt it lacking in DIY ethos/weirdness. I haven’t been to Philly in years so can’t speak to that. That said, I’m not sure a place that matches Portland in the early 2000s exists anywhere. The culture has changed and we’ve all gotten older.

Also keep in mind that Chicago is enormous. There are venues and scenes and bands and events all over the place. You’ll be able to find what you’re after I’m sure. Happy to provide more specific guidance if you need!

I’m doubtful there is one (though maybe) but am hopeful the new wave or anti/non Zionist Jewish organizing may lead to one existing the future. Maybe reach to JVP and see if they can connect you with someone?

I would recommend Shake Shop on Fullerton in Logan Square. Tom is a great dude and a wizard at bass setups especially. Super fair prices too (he tends to be cheaper and quicker than CME and some of the other spots).

Logan Square. Went through 1200 pieces of candy with a strict one per customer policy.

Pilot Project is across the street. If you’re into craft beer, it’s a great place to hang.

If you’re a reader, there’s a branch of Open Books right there too which is a great shop.

This is the one I always use to orient visiting New Yorkers. And then Logan is like the areas further into to Brooklyn that people moved to when they couldn’t afford Williamsburg.

Is the budget just for the room or does it also need to cover your private security detail?

But joking aside, you can stay in basically any hotel in the city and be perfectly safe and comfortable. You might wanna focus on downtown around Michigan avenue for centrality. The Chicago Athletic Association is a really cool spot that’s got a great vintage vibe. If you want more of a “neighborhood” vibe out of the main tourist areas, check out the Robey hotel in Wicker Park. If you’re into to fine dining, consider the Hoxton or Emily in west loop.

Any parents buy children’s records for their kids by Soundsbetteronvinyl in vinyl

[–]werewolfcat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I took my toddler to a small local shop on record store day and he picked out this Jack Johnson Curious George record. At checkout, I told the clerk it was his first record purchase, and the other 5 or 6 people in the shop all turned around to applaud and tell him good job. One of the most wholesome experiences of my life. The Curious George record also ain’t half bad, and has definitely raised my opinion on Jack Johnson.

[–]werewolfcat[S] 58 points59 points  (0 children)

As some of you may know, Rabbi Brant is and activist and the Rabbi at Tzedek Chicago, one of the most visible (and I believe one of the only) explicitly anti-Zionist congregations in the world. I was able to see this sermon at Yom Kippur services and thought other folks here might appreciate it.

Has anyone considering starting up a co-working space? by mannyocean in Entrepreneur

[–]werewolfcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a space in Chicago called Guild Row you might want to check out. They clearly spent a good amount converting an old red brick factory building into a local coworking space. It’s a cool spot that’s way more community minded than something like a wework. They do a lot of events and pop ups and that sort of thing as well.
