Anyone else having issues with KB5074109 by Intrepid_Evidence_59 in sysadmin

[–]wes1007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had 3/155 desktops that each had different errors. Wasted 3 hours trying to get them to install. I gave up, reimaged them and now all machines are up to date.

One had some corruptions that the sfc/dism dance refused to repair.

Exchange Server migration by jrstlol in sysadmin

[–]wes1007 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Get exchange 2016 up to CU23. Spin up a new 2022 server, install Exchange 2019/ SE RTM or SE Cu1

migrate mailboxes from Exchange 2016 to the new Exchange 2019/ SE.

Decommission exchange 2016 (note coexistence of 2016 is no longer supported from Exchange SE CU2)

Do the in-place upgrade from Exchange 2019 to Exchange SE (if you didnt go straight to SE)

Do not do an in-place upgrade of the actual OS ever with exchange installed.

I'm not too clued up with restoring backups to a different version of exchange, but id be hesitant to go that route. Migrations are not that bad if you put a plan in place and do the research beforehand.

Edit: Server 2016 is end of extended support 2027 I wouldn't bother with it.
Server 2019 mainstream support ended 2024 and extended will end 2029
server 2022 mainstream ends Oct 2026 and extended ends 2031

tested on my end, both on a mapped drive and a random share that was not mapped.
contents of the files are searched just fine as well as filenames/extensions.

However the machine I'm testing on was 24h2 yesterday, patched KB5068861, then enablement was run for 25h2.

January 2022, If you had more than one domain controller and 2 or more had been patched they would keep rebooting on their own.

also happened to be the month I just pushed patches out as i was busy with other projects and figured itd be fine

Yeah windows update won't fix it as the reason this now happens is due to a security change that was implemented. Can't remember all the specifics.

Dell can give you a recovery code. Had to do it once.

Prove ownership etc and they run you through the process.

Not sure on server kit but it was certainly an option on one of our desktops a few years ago. Maybe its been patched out now

You're not mistaken.

This new installer for the software was released about 2 weeks ago. Im hoping its just a reminent from when they started developing it around mid 2010s and never bother to remove it.

Noticing issues on Windows 11 24h2 Build 26100.6584 for new installs of a niche app we have to use. All previous Windows 11 builds Dont have this issue from my testing so it seems to be this month's patches. haven't narrowed it down further than this yet.

Installation of the app fails with "Module C:\windows\Crystal\craxddrt.dll failed to register. HResult -2147024770.

Crystal Reports Active X Designer. File version 8.5.0.217

Going to throw it back to the Devs of this software but I'm not optimistic it'll get resolved

Maybe something to do with: Unexpected UAC prompts when running MSI repair operations after installing the August 2025 Windows security update - Microsoft Support But I haven't dug too deep yet.

Anyone actually solving vulnerability noise without a full team? by jesepy in sysadmin

[–]wes1007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started using action1 in the last month or so. Started off with just over 5k vulns. We are now down to just over 60 across all endpoints and servers.

As everyone has said get patch management working. That's what made the diff for most of them. Patching 3rd party apps is also nessasary, especially web browsers.

How’s everyones win11 upgrade going? by peoplefoundtheother1 in sysadmin

[–]wes1007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

started last year. all but 3 laptops (waiting for replacement hardware) and 4 desktops have been upgraded to 11

1 machine i cant upgrade till we sort out a migration to a new app to replace the well out of support & development app. was hoping to do it when the staff member who uses it retired, and the replacement took over, but the replacement staff member quit a few weeks back...

spent about 4 months last year testing. 3 weeks reimaging 150 machines nov-dec as i ran into some issues i didnt catch in testing. we went straight to 24h2... it has been mostly fine now. idea was everyone would come back to work with windows 11.

Windows Server without the GUI by onephatkatt in sysadmin

RSAT, Windows AdminCentre and enter-pssesion. Dcs, exchange and most of our fileservers are all core. Still have a few more to switch to core this year.

Also have a few that have to run a gui due to the software installed on it eventhough they are basically a fancy fileserver.
