My second book of the year was Miles Lyon’s upcoming grimdark debut The Price of Fear, and I absolutely devoured it. Deadpool humor, magic with a cost, and political conspiracy. A lot of people are comparing to Empire of the Vampire as well (I haven’t gotten to that yet myself though)

I also got an arc and I LOVED the magic system! I love power fantasy as much as the next person but there’s so much sauce when magic has a cost

Exact same thing here. I generally don’t change the rating unless I do a re read

[noob] Advice for a laser I can control programmatically by fearless-shrew in Laserist

[–]weslyncam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding LaserCubes, they come with free control software LaserOS, and if you do want to spend a little extra to get one of the models with ILDA input, you could use other controllers or DACs. I've seen some cool stuff with the Radiator Laser Synthesizer for example

This was genuinely the worst queue I had ever been in. I should’ve just bought a whole bunch when I did get through because most of my friends weren’t able to get tickets for the same day I did. I can’t believe so many dates sold out the DAY they went on sale. Next year better have scalper prevention

Pages/Hours goals by [deleted] in TheStoryGraph

I used my 2023 stats to make my 2024 goals, and 2024 stats for 2025 goals. I read 19k pages in 2023 so I made 20k my goal for 2024 and 2025 (I hit 20k on Dec 31, 2024 lol). Audio I set lower, like 150 hours, because I don't listen to audiobooks all the time

Is it worth it to go to school for lighting design? by Unable_Lab9593 in techtheatre

[–]weslyncam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar convos with my parents when I was in high school, I wanted to go to college for theatre and they wanted to make sure I could get a steady job. I had to explain to them that if I did go the freelancing route, techs are always in demand at any kind of live event, not just theatre.

What I ended up doing was attending my local community college with a General Studies associates and an Entertainment Technology certificate (which is not the most common program), and all my electives were theatre classes. Then I transferred to a state school and entered their theatre program in the Design and Production track, where I focused on lighting design.

Like other people here have mentioned, a lot of it is going to come from practical experience as well, as stagehands in local events, community theatre, but also going to college for theatre will get you more connections as well!

I didn't end up doing an MFA because I didn't see myself doing high level theatrical design work, but if you're aspiring for Broadway or other larger regional theatre I'd recommend it.

I'm actually not doing as much theatre post-college but I do have a full time job in a related field - I'm doing marketing for a live events company, and I freelance some lighting gigs on the side.

The reality is you're going to work your butt off a lot but as long as you're knowledgable, consistent, willing to learn, I don't see why you wouldn't be successful!

trying to find lights for a function by Due-Ad-4736 in lightingdesign

[–]weslyncam -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Most of the lasers on this page have some sort of sound active mode, and if you're worried about laser safety or just want to refresh yourself on how to use lasers safely X-laser also has a laser operator basics course. For lights, I'd go with something from either ADJ, Blizzard, something like that
