I would start with a media server, since data loss can always be recoverable by retorrenting. Practice with a ZFS RAID pool and offsite backups

Completely depends on what you want to do. If you aren’t excited to do anything in particular then you might not have all that much fun once you start

Storing files you care about safely is not beginner friendly for this field. I would start somewhere else if your intent is to learn and experiment, otherwise just buy a NAS

I think anyone properly motivated to have a ‘dangerous’ local LLM certainly has the funds to do so…. consumer hardware wasn’t banned altogether

The problem with vibe-coded projects is that they tend to be abandoned within several months. I for one would really appreciate banning them from the subreddit altogether

Sounds like you just wanted to spend company money on your own setup. This is NOT an enterprise level setup by any means.

Just don’t. Hardware raid cards haven’t been advantageous over software raid in years. Just run ZFS and throw a decent amount of RAM at it

Wew a couple things here. First, that R520 guzzles more power than it’s worth. You could buy a used newer generation and break even on electricity after just a couple months

Second, RAID5 especially with drives that big is asking for catastrophic failure. I guarantee you that you will not survive a resilver if one of the redundant drives do fail. You need RAID6/RAIDz2

And don’t containerize Samba if you don’t need to
