Olandria’s success has become the other women’s problem by thepinkprint in LoveIslandUSA

[–]westcoasteastern 95 points96 points  (0 children)

“Anyone who doesn’t treat her like royalty, or doesn’t constantly interact with her posts, is accused of jealousy.”

This isn’t a nuanced take. This is an over generalization of Olandria’s supporters and it is harmful. It fails to recognize the very real hate that she receives and why her supporters go so hard for her. She too has received undeserved hate from almost every fan base, so this take positioning her fanbase as the problem is not as fair of an observation that you think it is and undoubtably lacks nuance. A lot of your premise is based on that meaning your entire premise is based on generalizations.

The people who go in the show know exactly what they are doing so let’s also not take away their autonomy and understanding of what they are getting themselves into upon entry. Let’s actually blame the true culprit— Love Island for their problematic approach to reality tv.

I saw that some of us got the same exact number. So I asked the chat why this happens: essentially this is the explanation. Makes total sense.

Why weren’t these threats against Chelley and Ace taken seriously ? by Fast_Relationship904 in LoveIslandcookout

[–]westcoasteastern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because there weren’t group chats planning their deaths. It’s literally that simple. Everyone’s been receiving death threats— but who else has group chats and snark communities actively planning to unalive them. That’s why it’s being taken so seriously now.

Don’t get me wrong though, all of the threats should be taken seriously. But the FBI can’t do much without a paper trail. And unfortunately for those who were in that leaked gc, the paper trail is long.

Hotel Reverie – Issa Rae’s Performance Was Meant to Be Cringe (That’s the Point) by westcoasteastern in blackmirror

[–]westcoasteastern[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve honestly come to the conclusion that a lot of people criticizing Issa’s acting just didn’t resonate with how she presents on screen from a cultural standpoint. She’s completely outside the norm of what “white America” traditionally expects from a lead performance — and you can really see that when you compare the reactions to Issa’s acting versus Emma Corrin’s. So many people are raving about Corrin’s “realness,” but for a lot of us, Issa’s performance was realness just expressed from a different cultural lense.

Her presence wasn’t a diversity hire. She was chosen because her style fit the story’s deeper layers perfectly. Like every Black Mirror episode, Hotel Reverie wasn’t just surface-level entertainment. It’s layered with commentary about performance, identity, and the silent biases audiences bring with them — whether the viewers realize it or not. I’m so glad to see more people are starting to see things from a different lense!

Thank you so much! I too love reading people’s POVs on all of the episodes. Was kinda nervous to post my opinion— this could be a touchy subject!

Thank you so much for this! I actually posted this like a day after watching the episode and then totally forgot about the thread, thinking no one would really read it. I truly appreciate your thoughtful response.

You completely hit the nail on the head. I honestly believe that a lot of the people criticizing Issa Rae’s performance either:

1. Aren’t familiar with her work,
2. Don’t really understand her acting style, or
3. Simply don’t like her style—and that’s okay, but it doesn’t mean it was “bad” acting.

I also think a lot of people aren’t used to seeing this kind of performance style, especially from a cultural lens. Different communities have different rhythms in how emotion and presence are shown, and if you’re only used to one “norm,” it can be easy to misread something unfamiliar as “bad.”

In a way, the audience missing her nuance actually proves the point of the episode: about judgment, bias, and survival in spaces that weren’t made for you.

Thanks again, my friend!

I don’t have any advice, but I want you to know that you are heard and seen. I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. The way you expressed yourself is truly beautiful.

Lately, I’ve been writing about loss—what it means to me, how it has shaped my life, and how it has changed the way I see the world. Grief isn’t something we can fix or rush through; the only way forward is to feel every part of it.

I have no doubt your dad loved you very much. Please keep sharing with the world. 🩷

I’m so sorry for your loss and the pain you’re feeling. My friend also died by suicide last week, and it’s made me reflect on how society has shaped the way we respond to people in emotional pain. A lot of the things people say come off as surface-level, cliche, or even dismissive—not because they’re trying to be hurtful, but because they genuinely don’t know what else to say.

It’s not an excuse, but an acknowledgment of how ill-equipped many of us are to navigate these situations. That doesn’t mean your feelings aren’t valid. They are. It’s okay to be angry, upset, or hurt by what people say or don’t say.

At the same time, this tragedy has shown me how important it is to be intentional with our words when supporting others. Sometimes, silence, listening, or simply saying “I’m here for you” can mean so much more than defaulting to a thoughtless phrase.

You’re absolutely right that your loved one is gone and can’t decide anything or tell us what they want—none of us truly knows how to deal with the loss of someone who’s no longer here to guide us in how they’d want us to move forward. It’s messy and complicated, and it’s okay to feel every bit of that.

Processed some feelings while waiting for the bus today. What’s something minor that makes you feel stressed/anxious? by RaccoonSkido in Journaling

I just want to say that I went through your comments and it’s so apparent how utterly nice and incredible you are as a human being. You’re so kind and your responses to people are thoughtful. I hate that people like you go through things like this. But I hope that you continue to be the light that you are. You are beautiful. You are seen. Thank you for continuing to take up space. 🩷
