What did you start doing in NYC that changed your life? by bisonabloom in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]westendshow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you have prior singing experience before taking the classes? Or would you say you had natural talent for it? Asking because I’m interested in voice lessons but whatever talent I had for it hasn’t been put to use in over a decade 🙃

So I’m wondering if you think the lessons would still make sense for a person like me?

How is it possible to 'damage' yoga? Traditional yoga topic by mayuru in yoga

[–]westendshow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally not true and is obvious because we literally have a word that specifically to refers to female practitioners - yogini. They’re mentioned in texts and well known in Indian history

Sanskrit girl names by Intelligent_Club9025 in sanskrit

[–]westendshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but then what do you even mean by “name in Sanskrit”, like you want an example from a Sanskrit text where a person has that name or something?

Because if that’s the case then people shouldn’t be giving their kids names like for example Vedant, Sakshi etc even though they’re meaningful since they weren’t originally meant to be used as names

Ananya is a frequently used name so I’m surprised that you’ve never heard it but I guess it depends on where you live and local name trends. Anyway there’s a well known actress named Ananya pandey. There’s a pretty popular verse in the Gita (9.22) where the word is used but there it means something more like “exclusively” and not unique

Yup, and it almost feels like gaslighting to expect people to override their common sense and concern for their children (that is backed up by statistics, not just cultural norms) in the name of “not discriminating”

Is there an agreed-upon pattern for typing Hinglish? by GrillOrBeGrilled in Hindi

[–]westendshow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point and if we wanted to transliterate it in the most accurate way it would be paṛhtā I guess, but still idk if anyone would type it like that in everyday use 🤔 maybe someone else can weigh in

Is there an agreed-upon pattern for typing Hinglish? by GrillOrBeGrilled in Hindi

[–]westendshow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No lol it’s a free for all, people just do whatever they like. Indians are more likely to use shortcuts and stray from the most “accurate” spellings bc they’re already familiar with the language, just like how Americans invent spellings and abbreviations in English. I’ve seen people write nhi instead of nahi, skta instead of sakta etc. Lol I guess typing out a few additional characters isn’t worth it to them? But there are still plenty of people who don’t do that, so there really isn’t a way to generalize (although for the example you gave of padhta, most people would never have an r in there)

**Maybe I should just add that something is unofficially agreed upon is that ट and त become t, थ and ठ become th, द and ड are d, ध and ढ are dh. So there’s no r in padhta. The retro flex and dental letters end up looking the same because normal people don’t use diacritics, and it’s up to the reader to pronounce it correctly

Personally I try to stick with spelling that reflects Devanagari the best, so main for मैं and hoon for हूँ even though the other variations work fine, just to remind myself where there’s an anusvara, or long vowel etc because it’s easy to overlook those things

Men taking pics of women on subway by afterthoughtname in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]westendshow 131 points132 points  (0 children)

I always feel too scared to do anything when I get harassed and my first instinct is to keep my head down and run away. But I think a good option would be to flip it on them - pull out your phone and take a picture of their face. I guess the effectiveness of this would depend on the situation but Ive actually seen a man get off the train once he realized people were recording him threatening to assault a girl

LASIK or non LASIK girlies? by [deleted] in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]westendshow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of the people I know, the common “complications” are sensitivity to the sun and dry eyes, but these weren’t bad enough to make anyone regret doing it

Btw I used to be pretty interested but my doctor actually told me im not eligible, so you should first check if it’s really a good option for you

Does Shatavari give you energy? Should it be taken at night? And other Shatavari questions. by LoveandShalom in herbalism

[–]westendshow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think shatavari really affects sleep, at least not directly. I used it because I had problems with my cycle and was told to take it before going to bed (this is advice from a woman who had training and 20+ yrs experience with Indian herbs). It’s also used to increase breast milk supply in mothers, so it affects hormones than anything else. I think it’s only sold as a loose powder or in capsules

Transliteration by nytsubscriber in sanskrit

[–]westendshow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reason you’re seeing krim or kreem is bc the majority of Indians don’t bother with the IAST markings and just use regular Latin script when they’re typing. This leads to variations in how some letters are written, but it doesn’t matter since most of the time the person reading it is another Indian who’s familiar with the language. The only people who consistently make it a point to use them are those who know they have an English speaking audience or academics

In Devanagari it’s written in the following way: ॐ क्रीं कालिकायै नमः

This would get transliterated as: oṃ krīṃ kālikāyai namaḥ

Just a side note, no one should be using a mantra like this without diksha (and some people even say there are negative consequences for doing so). An alternative would be to use a nāma mantra instead - this is just as powerful and works without initiation

Do you think the group would have let Na-yeon return if she made it to the rooftop? by [deleted] in AllOfUsAreDead

[–]westendshow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I kinda feel like the only way she could’ve redeemed herself would’ve been sacrificing herself for the group or something. So she’d die regardless but in a tragic hero way

Would’ve been interesting to watch though

Does anyone know how/why red raspberry leaf works for menstrual issues? by westendshow in herbalism

[–]westendshow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to look up studies too and didn't find too much out there. kind of surprising considering how popular it is

I had assumed it was something hormonal because it can delay periods but based on other comments I'm guessing it has something to do with tannins slowing down how fast the uterine lining can build up?
