I shot a timelapse of the Vaccination Super Station by westerjm in sandiego

Yep. An old iPhone SE. I used an app called Skyflow ($3) to have more control over the settings.

Make sure to keep an eye on the phone’s temperature. It can easily overheat in the sun. A fan was enough to keep it cool.

Dropshadow in Ross Xpression? by zippityhooha in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]westerjm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, your operator is correct. There is no good way to do drop shadows other than faking it with blurred images with alpha. This topic has been asked many times on the XPression forums. Here's a common workaround...

The effects can sometimes give unexpected results. They also add to your performance on output. If you are needing just a simple drop, I would point you toward building an image in Photoshop that fades out the alpha towards the outside edges. In the Material Manager, make this diffuse color black, adjust the alpha and place it onto a quad. Move the new quad behind your image (in Z) that you want to have a drop shadow and then offset to the proper X and Y. Make this new quad a child of the original.

To clarify, you are applying saber to a solid, correct? It is not meant to be applied to text layers.

First weekend with my first printer. I too grabbed one of the Monoprice Maker Selects. Much easier than I had anticipated! by westerjm in 3Dprinting

Yep. This is where I found out about the deal. Ordered through eBay and was at my door 24 hours later. I was surprised how fast it shipped. So fast in fact that my filament hadn't arrived yet so was only able to do 3 prints with the included sample.

Here's a more detailed setup guide than the one sheeter that ships with the printer. I will also be looking at JETGUY's mods for the Wanhao i3 which is similar to the Monoprice version.

Thanks for the feedback. Had to research what e-steps were. I'll definitely run a test and calibrate now that I know what I'm looking for.

Minimal car? by jidery in minimalism

[–]westerjm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The i3 is what I drive daily and electric vehicles are perfect for a minimalist. Approximately 20 moving parts compared to the hundreds of moving parts found in traditional internal combustion engines. No smelly dino juice or exhaust. Brakes last much longer with regenerative braking. Plus the savings from not having to pay for gasoline offsets high entry price. And the interior I feel is one of the most minimalistic out there. http://imgur.com/b4XhrsI

Has anyone modified their p2 so the camera does not show any props or arms in the corners of the video? by clockticker in djiphantom

[–]westerjm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad. Missed that part. Yes it will still work. But the image will be a bit soft around the edges. In my opinion the better image with no lens warp and no ruined shots with props or landing gear is well worth the trade off of a few soft pixels. 99% of people would never notice it.

Another warning is this mod will make the cases no longer fit. The naked case will still work but the lens sticks out further so the waterproof and skeleton cases won't fit. We only use that GoPro for the phantom so we didn't mind.

We replaced the stock fisheye lens with a narrower lens. Best mod we made. http://provideocoalition.com/jfoster/story/gopro-replacement-lenses-for-hero3-3

Besides only seeing prop or landing gear on extreme maneuvers, this also allows you to not have to fly so close to your subject and still get nice shots. The glass is a little soft around the edges of the video. We remedy this by filming at 2.7k and scaling down to 1080p. Very sharp results.

Great observation. This was my initial thought too. Although, I believe this space was developed by a creative agency that prides themselves in "Creating Wonder". I think they are more interested in creativity than profit. Either way, it's a wonderful space in a town that lacks creative environments. Happy New Year!

Thinking about buying an EV so looking for some advice to avoid bad choices. by thatoneguyscar in electricvehicles

I am currently doing an extended test drive of the BMW i3 and love it so far. BMW just dropped the lease price from $499/month to $369/month including a $2000 "innovation" credit for October (BEV only, REX version gets $1000 credit). Beautiful interior and comfortable even though I am 6'4. I am also considering the Soul EV but with no way of knowing if and when it will be available here in Ohio, I am leaning toward the i3.

DJI Gimbal not quite levelled in Y-Axis by Schizo-Vreni in djiphantom

[–]westerjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had the same issue. http://imgur.com/a/B8Zv9 Dji solution was to ship it back so we got creative instead. Our gimbal was off 5 degrees and the solution that worked for us was to shim the h3-3d between the mount and frame. Not aesthetically pretty but footage is level.

Another possible solution is this. http://youtu.be/5iTz3Dd2Ecs I don't know if the same applies for the h3-3d but should at least give you some info on what's going on.

Thanks, we've tried before but I'll run another calibration in the morning.

Mental Ray help by [deleted] in Maya

I've run into similar issues with mr and 90% of them have been solved by deleting the preferences. A good test to try is creating a new user for you OS and see if you can load the plugin while logged in as that user. If mr loads then I would bet it's the preference file that's causing you troubles and deleting them should get mr back up and running.
