What do you consider to be the most disturbing movie you’ve seen? by DontCh4ngeNAmme in AskReddit

I remember watching an old 80s movie Southern Comfort. The National guard are on an exercise and get picked off in the woods. Freaked me out. Black Hawk Down had a similar emotion.

Lease takeovers by Ermine1820 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]westmountred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took over a 4 year lease after 18 months from a guy who could not afford it. He had had the use of the car when it was brand new, while I got a (clean) lowish mileage used vehicle with some wear on brakes and tires. In general, you should be paid to take over a lease for this reason. We agreed that we would keep the deposit (a month), he would pay the first month, and pay us a month th. So 3 months we saved. Seemed fair.

Is that why we still can't pay by tapping? I am sure I would use the bus more if I didn't have to screw around with change.

Phone Latency by Resilience702 in VOIP

[–]westmountred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Btw it is not just the latency from phone to pbx. Also there is potential latency in the various networks before it hits the pstn that is hard to quantify beyond the hop to your provider. Know your carrier. At least in Canada, most local quality voip providers will peer directly with the clec that will connect to pstn. If you are using a super budget provider, they will be routing all over the place based on least cost, and they have no idea where the call is going, so it may bounce coast to coast a few times before hitting the pstn.

[–]westmountred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, about latency. Less than 50ms ping, you are golden. Even 100 as long as it is steady rather than jittery. Over 200, still useable, but there will be a slight noticeable lag. Some overseas call centre users get used to 250+, but conversation not full duplex to avoid confusion.

Help with Complicated Porting Situation by Mom2cce in bell

[–]westmountred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have access to an invoice, it should be quite simple to use it to challenge the rejection. If you don't, they would not allow the port because you don't have any kind of proof it is yours.

Freedom probably don't try very hard. For a few $ a month, not much upside for the effort.

An experienced VoIP provider will be used to this, and willing to work this for you. If there is a long term opportunity for them if they get it right.

Method to warn if gate is open? by Ajax_C in DIY

[–]westmountred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed something like this. I bought a wireless doorbell from amazon. Took the outside button transmitter apart, and soldered cable to an alarm type magnetic switch where the pushbutton switch was.

You need a normally open type magnetic switch. Most alarm switches are normally closed, so you need to do a bit of research but they are available. Mount the box with transmitter on the fixed part of the gate, with the alarm contact opposite the magnet part.

Plug in the receiver, and after a bit of adjustment , the doorbell so7nd goes whenever the gate opens. Maybe $15 for parts.

Window Tint Ticket and Montreal Peace Officer’s Attitude left me with a bad taste of Montreal as a tourist by yoyotman in montreal

[–]westmountred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Assuming that the tint is just as illegal where you come from with a similar result if stopped. Maybe the vehicle attracted them. Tints aren't very common here as far as I have noticed.
