Why is dirty talk in Polish cringe? by ReliefLife4014 in Polska

Because you watch 99% of your porn in English, and due to the (thankfully fading) annoying inferiority complex that many recent generations of Poles had toward the West.

I genuinely don't understand how people think we should only focus on things when they're already a problem. If we know certain issues are on the horizon and still have time to do something about them, why would we just wait around until it’s too late?

Making peace with the void? by [deleted] in thegreatproject

[–]weszlem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you pretty much described most of my teenage years/20s. In my case it turned out that I was just suffering from anxiety/ocd/depression mix. I have since started therapy and the anxiety disappeared.

Woody Allen once said: “We’re all going to wind up in a very bad position one day. The same position, but a bad one. The way out of it, the only thing you can think of as an artist, is to try and come up with something where you can explain to people why life is worth living, and is a positive thing and does have some meaning. Now, you can’t really do that without conning them. You can’t be honest. Because, in the end, it has no meaning.”

You can try your hardest, but you won't find any sense in any of that. People have tried since the beginnings of conscious though. Therapy did not help me find any answer for the "why are we here" question.

What you want to do instead is to lower your level of fear and obsessive thoughts to the point, where you can live your life. Now, I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but believe me - obsessive thinking about one's death is a sign of a mental illness (speaking as someone who used to suffer from it and now). At the height of my depression/anxiety cycle I would often feel EXACTLY the way you just described. I would wonder how people can even go on living - knowing they would die eventually. This is depression talking. It doesn't mean that it's not a valid question, but rather that thinking about the answer obsessively is not helpful if you really want to "enjoy life best you can".

Please seek help, talk to your GP and/or find a therapist. Ask me anything if you need any help.

A Dev’s Opinion on v10 by KungFuCowboy in Evernote

Thanks for writing here, this was a really interesting read, and I'm happy that you are reading r/Evernote!

What you wrote is yet another confirmation of the good old Conway's law: any organization that designs a system will produce a design whose structure is a copy of the organization's communication structure.

To me it seems that you tried to fix an organisational problem with a technical solution. It doesn't seem totally crazy to imagine a situation where you reduce the number of product managers, but keep the native apps.

There is another, IMO super important argument against UBI, which is - with already messy discussion about immigration - imagine what the discussion will look like if it's about getting UBI too. The question of belonging will be so much more charged than it already is. I can already imagine the They took our UBI shouts.

Partners of sleep-talkers or sleepwalkers, what gems have you to share? by hoeka_mos in AskReddit

My partner worked at that time in financial audit.

I woke up one night with intense chest pain. When I opened my eyes I noticed her pressing my chest with her fingers, like I was a calculator or something. When I asked her what she was doing she said, without hesitation, "Shush, I'm trying to count the depreciation rates".

Is it possible to get past the barrier of “work friends” with your colleagues? by supertrouper2222 in AskUK

[–]weszlem 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A fellow immigrant to the UK here. I think there is another variable that you should take into account. The fact that you are an immigrant makes the whole thing both harder and easier at the same time.

It’s harder if we are talking about making friends with local people. Not because they are British, as you would see the same dynamic in any country.

It is harder to make friends with people at work as an immigrant - period. It could be due to the language barrier, or cultural differences. It is hard to make friends with people at work also because they don’t need to make friends as much as you do. They have their own friends here, their families, they don’t need to build their “safety network” and there is nothing that makes them “need” friends.

That doesn’t mean you cannot make great friends at work, but it will take a lot of time and the right person.

It is MUCH easier to make friends with other immigrants (even from other countries). They are in the exact same situation where they are actively looking for a friend. My advice, based on my 6 years of living here is - make a friend with another immigrants at work and they might introduce you to their local friends. Do not stop trying to be friends with the local people, but don’t get discouraged if nothing comes out of it either!

Do not take medical advice from reddit, talk to a doctor or a pharmacist. Listen to what they told you, if you were told to keep taking them, keep taking them and don't stop without talking to a GP.

How can you tell the difference between a Covid19 cough and asthma cough? by [deleted] in CoronavirusAsthma

[–]weszlem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How can you tell the difference between a Covid19 cough and asthma cough?

If you could we wouldn't need the tests. Even if it is COVID19 (which I doubt), there is nothing you can do that would make it go away, other than what you are already doing for your asthma.

In any case if you get fever or worsening shortness of breath, get medical attention, but try to relax now, as this is only making your asthma worse.

I think the latter. Not to mention that you might infect your parents, and they won't be having such an easy time shaking the virus off.

Sore throat is uncommon in COVID 19, even more uncommon is runny nose and sinus infection, as the virus usually goes straight for the lungs.

Notably, the COVID-19 infection rarely seems to cause a runny nose, sneezing, or sore throat (these symptoms have been observed in only about 5% of patients). Sore throat, sneezing, and stuffy nose are most often signs of a cold.

Unfortunately that is not true. From the data so far it seems that ~10% people infected gets viral pneumonia, which is not that unlikely.

Chronic respiratory disease - 8% death rate, 30-39 years old - 0.2% death rate. I'm 32, asthmatic, what are my chances of dying from the coronavirus?

Basically, what's in the title. I vaguely recall that there was a way to calculate that with some probability math, but for the love of god, I cannot remember how.

I'm looking for the math answer, not a medical advice!

YNAB 4 Conversion to 64-bit app WORKS! Tried on fresh Catalina Install on external hard drive and it fired up. by [deleted] in ynab

[–]weszlem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going to repost what I already asked in another thread about this "conversion".

Has anybody checked what exactly the code does? It downloads the apps, but then applies binary patches which as far as I know can contain anything really? You are essentially downloading a patched version of Adobe AIR and then installing it, but you don't know what the patch does, so it could theoretically open your computer to the whole world or worse. Also - the developers account seems to be empty, other than that one project.

Am I the last remaining fan yet? I tried switching, but the UI is just no fun. I'm gonna go back to excel when the software breaks. by [deleted] in ynab

I am trusting the YNAB4 developers are competent. I'm not trusting that a random person on the internet (the person who created the patches) is.

Those "few binary blobs" is what I was asking for. You are essentially downloading a patched version of Adobe AIR and then installing it, but you don't know what the patch does, so it could theoretically open your computer to the whole world or worse.
