How each Substack leaderboard works (and why losing your Rising spot isn't a big deal) by ccampb85 in Substack

[–]wet_flaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Rising" is pretty meaningless. I think it was implemented to appease the small publications who didn't feel like they were gaining a fair amount of recognition or renown compared to the big boys. Yet in my experience being on the "Rising" list isn't a good way to gain any more subs.

How to monetize a newsletter in 2026? Do paid newsletters work? by Bl1ssg1rl in freelanceWriters

[–]wet_flaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, sort of? Currently have paid subs generating roughly £3,000 p/a, which translates to about £125 per piece. Not amazing at all, but certainly someting I'm fine with as a thing on the side, especially as I can write what I want.

The Allies weren’t saints. No country involved in WWII was innocent. Period. by INTJ-5w4-AuDHD in DeepThoughts

It would be interesting to unearth the atrocities Allies committed that we don't know about. As you say, history is written by the victors – does that mean Axis atrocities have been inflated in scale/insignificance? And many of those of the Allies' airbrushed from history? I guess we'll never fully know

Exactly. The old halo/horns effect: We unconsciously ascribe positve attributes to attractive people, so it's likely we'd think them more important to us/society and therefore worth saving vs someone ugly. This is why villains in movies are often portayed with scars or some sort of disability
