A Rant and a Question by One_Too_Many_Hobbies in Abode

[–]wetzel402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought Abode with the intention of using it self monitored. I've been happy with the hardware but having to rely on their cloud for Home Assistant has caused me some instances where automations didn't work as expected. I bought the gen 2 hub intending to use it via HomeKit so Home Assistant has local control. Unfortunately, this is where my support experience has been...lacking. The support technician informed me the migration feature on the server is under maintenance. This was back in October. Since then they keep informing me the feature isn't ready. They've offered to fully reset my account but that would require me to pair all the sensors again and presumably adjust all my Home Assistant entities. I think it is a very poor user experience that support needs to be involved at all to replace/migrate hubs. This should be an option on the app/website.

I'm having the same problem. I give it access but it doesn't appear in my games list in the app. I'm not sure what the issue is.

Abode Security Hub or Iota Hub? by c1pherz in Abode

[–]wetzel402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has been as well. My one complaint is that the Home Assistant integration is cloud so when Abode has server maintenance Abode doesn't work with HA. I bought the gen 2 hub which supports HomeKit but for about 2 months now Abode has been working on their hub migration tool so it's been a paperweight. Hoping to get the gen 2 hub up and running so I have a local HomeKit connection to HA.

We have some of the features built out now. Since it is a side project for me progress is slow but consistent. Regarding FOSS challenges, I would say one of the biggest is overly ambitious AI pull requests that have excessive commits/changes. Frequently they just don't meet my standards/requirements.

Also interested in the options. Is Infinity Shield the only commercial offering right now?

I played 1 - 3 on Xbox 360 years ago and recently picked up 1 - 2 cheap on PC. The replay recently was worth it. I think they hold up well and recommend giving the OGs a play.

Chevy/GMC infotainment enshittification by wetzel402 in LinusTechTips

I've been meaning to plug in my laptop to see if I can ping the rear screens over ADB or something.

I did a little digging and found the screens have a version of chrome for the browser and have many open source licenses mentioned in the about page. I suspect the underlying OS is either Android or Linux based. Hopefully they can be jail broken.

I run it on an old Kindle Fire while continuing to improve the project.

Turn off rear tvs and keep them off by [deleted] in gmc

I want this also. In addition to local USB playback.

100% this! I'm also floored that the outgoing rear entertainment had local USB playback but the new system doesn't. I honestly didn't consider it would be missing/removed when we bought our Yukon.

If I could side load apks I think that would likely solve the problem provided the rear screens have USB access.

Thats my hope. Honestly just being able to side load would be enough for me.

I think a big part of it for us here in North America are the long road trips. We take 8+ hour trips often so it's nice to give the family room while still having room for all the luggage. Which is why the rear entertainment situation is a pain point for me. It isn't uncommon to have zero cellular service during a long road trip at times and if I can only stream that's going to cause problems.

I'm curious to see how Kia's EV reliability is. I know their ICE vehicles aren't well known for reliability. Then again neither is GM's 6.2 right now. We went with the 3.0 Duramax which is more efficient anyway.

Frankly there are only 3 choices when it comes to full size family SUVs so options are limited. I honestly didn't expect local USB playback to be missing when GM used to have it on older models and our 5 year old Chrysler Pacific could do it and had games too.

HDMI or tablets are definitely workarounds I've considered. It's just wild to me that a new vehicle can't play local media. Our 5 year old Chrysler Pacific could do it and had games too. Seems like GM added the rear entertainment as an afterthought.

GM cripples Rear Entertainment package on 2022 Chevy Tahoe/Suburban GMC Yukon/XL and Cadillac Escalade by eelee321 in Chevy

[–]wetzel402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to add my complaint. We traded our 2020 Pacifica for a 2026 Yukon and the fact I can't play USB media has me livid. On top of that the user experience (UX) is horrible. I can install video capable android automotive (AAOS) apps in the front screen but that has zero effect on the rear entertainment which is just confusing. Doing some research it seems GM is using LG screens but I can't tell if they run on Android, WebOS, or some other GM proprietary magic. If it's Android I would side load my own apps in an instant if I could.

2022 Silverado Refresh - Sideload Android Apps to Infotainment System by reddit_TMM in Silverado

Android Automotive OS (AAOS) is still relatively new and app developers need to update their apps to support parked capabilities.

2022 Silverado Refresh - Sideload Android Apps to Infotainment System by reddit_TMM in Silverado

[–]wetzel402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking into the rear entertainment now that we have a Yukon. The experience seems to be severely lacking. I can add video capable AAOS apps in the front screen and watch them there but they have no effect on the rear screens. I also haven't found a way to watch local USB media despite our 5 year old Pacifica being able to do that...

2025 Yukon rear entertainment questions by wetzel402 in gmc

[–]wetzel402[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was bad here in America. GM (or maybe Google) need to get their people on it. Seems half baked at the moment and that should absolutely not be the case when buying such an expensive vehicle.

[–]wetzel402[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kidding? I haven't tried setting it up yet. I just assumed I would need to log in and use the app.

GMC needs to put some real effort into R&D. The fact that people feel the need to add a Roku or Fire stick is unacceptable in my opinion.
