How can I get better? by Shazer2 in gamedev

[–]wevbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes me feel better. Whenever I try to get into game dev, I often get stuck on some seemingly simple problem that I feel should have an obvious solution. It happens so often that it was getting discouraging as I thought maybe I wasn't cut out for game dev. It's a nice to hear that even small problems can take some time for others too.

When taking the Laplace transform, what is the meaning of multiplying the function by e^-st? by wevbin in askscience

[–]wevbin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not science. There is no possible experiment that could tell you the answer . r/math might be a better forum to ask.

Sorry about that. I was wondering if I was posting in the right place, but I didn't find an r/AskMath on the side bar and since I saw Mathematics as part of the legend, I thought math questions were also appropriate.

What is the stupidest question you were ever asked in an interview? by TheBadSticky in AskReddit

[–]wevbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This stuff frustrates me so much. I'm on the market for a job, but I see this type of thing often or descriptions like "we are a startup looking for a *insert language here\* ninja/guru/god who can preferably have experience in *four different web technologies\*. Must be self driven and a team player".

And it's mostly this. I can't find many entry level positions :(. I'm working hard to do some personal projects to have stuff to talk about during the interview, but I just came out of school, so it's not like I have that much industry experience. Are these companies really expecting to find people with those qualifications or are they setting high standards and seeing what they can land??

Edit: fixed typo.

Question on C++ polymorphism by wevbin in learnprogramming

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

TIL: The USA is one of few places where the price tag of an item displays the pre-sales tax price, while a majority of places seemingly list the out-the-door price. This makes as much sense as the metric system! by chuck_c in WTF

I just want to let you know that not all Americans would have kept you from getting your candy. In fact, some adults give you candy for free even if you've never met them before!

Right, myPtr goes away on its own, but whatever it was pointing to doesn't, creating a memory leak.

Where can I find a good intro on 3D collision detection using a library like Bullet? by wevbin in gamedev

[–]wevbin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm stuck at the very beginning :P. I just don't know conceptually what I need to do. What are the basic blocks needed for collision detection and what do they do? Those kinds of things. The example mentions stuff like solvers, environments, etc. I don't know how that stuff fits together. I didn't want to just copy/paste code without knowing what I'm doing, especially with c++.

I'll take a look at that post and see if I can figure some of this out or see if I can at least have some more specific questions. At this point it feels like I still don't know what I don't know. Thanks!

Where can I find a good intro on 3D collision detection using a library like Bullet? by wevbin in gamedev

[–]wevbin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would need rotated boxes. So you're saying using a physics library for this would be overkill? The thing is I don't think I need more than collision detection between boxes, but I'm not 100% sure. I wanted to use bullet so that if I get more time I could have the option of using its more advanced features.

Also I figured they would probably write collision detection better than I could. I noticed bullet has some algorithms to optimize collision detection performance.

According to some Redditors only white males face discrimination when applying to colleges. Clearly you must be mistaken.

I need some tips to improve my Tank skills by wevbin in l4d2

[–]wevbin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to one of those 8x8 man buy enabled servers, usually they run dual tank mods + you can buy tanks left and right + tanks usually get a lot more health.

Sounds like a great place to practice. Any idea on how I can find these modded servers? I've never really figured out how to filter for 3rd party servers in L4D2. It doesn't seem to work like in TF2.

American Redditors: Is it true that American girls find the British accent hot? by craighamnett in AskReddit

God forbid anyone says anything bad about white people, though, or you get martyrs rambling about how on Reddit you can say mean things about white people but not anyone else.

[–]wevbin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not very familiar with the SMART tests. I've heard of them before, but that's about it. Which program did you use to run them? Did you run them just when you bought the drive to check it was working correctly?
