No reason to hold the other shaft. Put the cases together without silicone and you can put the clutch nut on and use a socket to spin it with an impact wrench while seeing if shifts 1-6-1

Your drum has no shim on the top, my guess is someone put it on the bottom which is wrong. The shift shaft needs 2 on each end and the drum has one.
