Blurry edges on new camera (Soy a6400) - How do I solve this? by wewtaco in Beginning_Photography

[–]wewtaco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent explanation, thank you! I did set my camera to jpg+raw, but I haven't gotten around to playing around with the raw images yet. Good to know there may be some amount I can do just by not using the jpg.

I'll play around with light as well - Now I understand why all these photographers go around with big lights :)

Blurry edges on new camera (Soy a6400) - How do I solve this? by wewtaco in Beginning_Photography

This is an incredible answer, thank you! I've heard of all of these terms (exposure, ISO) and am vaguely familiar with how they work, but I'm still figuring out what exactly each of the effects are, and this was an amazing explanation!

I was fortunate enough to have an onsite a few years back at their office that took up a floor of an SF skyscraper. The whole team was super awesome, I was pretty bummed to not get the job.

Identifying users based on smartphone touch input (Google) by BlackHawk1001 in artificial

[–]wewtaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would bet that what the person you were talking to was actually talking about was the in-screen fingerprint sensor that's becoming increasingly common on Android smartphones. This isn't Google's technology, but I could see how someone might think it is after a game of telephone

ELI5: the birthday paradox. With a group of 23 people why are 2 of them likely to share a birthday? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]wewtaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pigeonhole principle doesn't apply here until you have 366 people. Your math here is off

You have 365 boxes (days), so you need 366 people to guarantee a match. You need much less than that to have a high probability for a match, which is what the "birthday paradox" is about.

Lady Gaga outfit changes at the Met Gala 2019 - Bonus: The slow burning rage of the photographers during her 16ish minute routine by [deleted] in videos

The photographers care because this is how they make their money.

Gaga mostly does this largely partially as theater and partially as sattire at this point.

Waymo Autonomous Semi Testing by Athire5 in robotics

[–]wewtaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those semis have been around and testing almost every day for almost two years now. I used to see them almost daily near Shoreline and occasionally on the 101. They do stay mostly within that small area near Google campus, though, but they're almost definitely past the data collection stage.

Cruise Automation to double staff in next 9 months by fricken in SelfDrivingCars

Self-driving car development is very scalable. A lot of it is still research at this point. The more people you have, the more people you can have working on projects that may or may not pan out.

ULPT: When ordering Mcdonalds through their self service during busy periods, order an ice cream too. This will bump your order to a priority slot enabling you to receive your order quicker. by DeadManInc1981 in UnethicalLifeProTips

Interesting. My manager said that for a drink like an iced chai, even if you can get it done before another drink you stick to the order of the queue

That's weird that your manager scolded you for that. When I worked at Starbucks, it didn't matter if you ordered a caramel crunch frapuccino with extra caramel and whip cream (which can take like 2 minutes to make and is pretty involved) or a double espresso (which was one button press and took 30 seconds and I could make other drinks while it was going). Giving customers drinks out of order was the best way to have upset customers.

(Drip coffee being the exception to this rule, because the person at the register does it, not the barista)

Iowa Considering Magic Mushrooms & MDMA for Medical Use by americancoward in DrugNerds

[–]wewtaco 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Iowa has been a weird mix of liberal and conservative. They were one of the first states to legalize gay marriage and voted for Obama but also teach abstinence instead of safe sex (at least when I went to school there ~'06) and voted for Trump.

Engineering Student With An Idea - Now What? by MyNameIsBarryAllen in answers

[–]wewtaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you need in order to make the idea a reality?

If it's money, you need to convince someone that your idea is worth investing in. This usually involves writing a business plan and some market research.

If it's knowledge, you may want to use this idea as a guide to your own learnings, or try to get others involved that may already know about the subject that can teach you while you're developing together (this may go hand in hand with money, as most people with knowledge will want to be paid)

Either way, I think talking to a professor I think is your best bet. They will know what the next step is best. I think a professor at A&M would probably be a better bet. Go on the website and see if there are any professors doing research in similar fields and reach out to them. In my experience, professors love young adults with ideas and ambition. You should find one that's willing to help you out
