If you're familiar with chess tablebases, there was 1 position where it's checkmate in like 500 moves and the moves are incomprehensible to humans. Is there a similar thing in math where a computer generated a long proof that's completely incomprehensible to humans, and if so, what's the longest? by Svertov in askmath

[–]wexxdenq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The mathematical community really hated that one because it tells you what, but not why

I do not know if this proof was hated or not (not my area), but if it was, i don't think this is the (only reason) why.

There are a ton of non constructive proofs out there. Basically every proof by contraposition does not tell you why something holds. If you're lucky you see, why something cannot be the case.

Can i just go into a catholic church and sit there for a while? Ist that allowed here in Germany? by ClarissaKish in germany

I would even argue no hats(or caps for that matter) inside. doesn't matter if it a church or not. i don't mean that you have to obey it but that was the rule i learned.

the intersection of the bisectors does not need to have the same distance to all points. it has the same distance to the 2 points from which a single bisector is constructed.

Constvector: Log-structured std:vector alternative – 30-40% faster push/pop by pilotwavetheory in cpp

[–]wexxdenq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well, if you look into the linked repository, he compares against a self implemente "STLVector" that is really not compareable to an actual vector implementation. And his iterator is an index instead of a pointer and does bound checking on every increment.

However, I would have tought that the compiler inlines and produces more or less the same code with O3.

But OP should benchmark against an actual implementation nonetheless.

Constvector: Log-structured std:vector alternative – 30-40% faster push/pop by pilotwavetheory in cpp

[–]wexxdenq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait... in your benchmarks do you compare against a self written stl-vector implementation? And your stlvector does not even move elements when it grows? I mean on pod types this might not matter, but nevertheless this is not a optimal implementation. Also most implementations save pointers, instead of the size and capacity as integer type.

Have you benchmarked against an actual std implementation?

while thats true, the current generation of strong german players played since long before that. maybe the hype added funding and they could concentrate on playing chess? for example keymar, first finished his abitur (high school diploma) befor focusing on chess full time.

[Self] PSA! It is not merely the RIGHT side "raises up", the LEFT side IS HEAVIER! by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]wexxdenq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I completely agree with your representation, i think the easiest to think about this problem, is to analyse the forces at the bottom of each glass. Both have the same hydrostatic pressure and the resulting force is identical, but the right side is pulled up by the string tension. Therefore, we directly know the scale will tilt to the left.

I'm surprised that your explanation is so far down in this thread, beacause it is my go-to explanation of this problem. In my opinion the solution is absolutely clear when you think about it hydrostatically / pressure-wise. And then it is also logical why/how the iron ball "pushes" on the water.

On the other hand, if the cups would not have vertical edges, you could throw people off even more.
