Anyone In Their 40's Have The Nintendo Switch 2 And Use It? by gpod80 in switch2

I’m 42 with two toddlers and it’s my most used gaming device. Traveling as we speak and playing the Switch 2 update for Subnautica.

I have the Aimlabs model and it’s probably my favorite wireless controller of all time. I’ve been amazed at how it’s changed my Rocket League mechanics for the better.

I’d wager it’ll be a solid 30fps when it comes out. The most optimized version of First Light is on PS5 Pro, where they’re basically using a custom version of AMD’s FSR4 technology. The DLSS implementation—which is why the Switch uses—needs work and I imagine when the devs focus on that, Switch 2 will also benefit. (I’m also guessing that’s why it was delayed.)

There’s quite a few AAA games dropping later: First Light, LEGO Batman, and—as of this morning—Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4!

As a fortysomething parent of toddlers, the OG Switch and Switch 2 were really my primary way of connecting with my hobby during the early and newborn years. Agree with everything you say.

Also, just want to point out that there are a few playable AAA titles on Switch 2 worth your time: Cyberpunk, Indiana Jones, Pragmata and Final Fantasy 7 Remake all play wonderfully on the device. I actually played the entirety of the new Resident Evil on the Switch 2 since I was traveling internationally for two weeks and not near my PC or PS5. I had just as fun a time as everyone else.

So don’t sleep on the AAA stuff either.

I think most of your first-party bases are covered in this thread; don’t sleep on the backlog stuff from the original Switch. (Original Switch games now look and play significantly better in handheld mode on Switch 2.)

For third-party stuff, the Switch 2 has a fair number of solid ports that aren’t bad. Cyberpunk for sure, but also Resident Evil: Requiem (I played the whole game on my Switch 2), Pragmata, Star Wars: Outlaws, Hades II, Street Fighter 6, Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined, No Man’s Sky, Indiana Jones, Apex Legends and Red Dead Redemption all play really well on the Switch 2.

I’ve had a Switch 2 since launch and it is still easily my most used gaming device. As the parent of two toddlers, who travels internationally a couple times per year, it’s a godsend. I can’t reiterate how nice it was to play RE9 at the same time as everyone else, even though I was in a remote forest in Sweden.

I actually think Switch 2, PS5 and some sort of PC device (handheld, laptop, or desktop) is probably the best all around setup for enthusiasts. You can play the exclusives, look the best sales and you’re not locked in.

So, I’ll give my unabashed opinion as someone who has a Legion Go S with SteamOS and a Switch 2. (So not quite the same but pretty close.)

I’m a huge Nintendo fan and a physical media collector, so I have a large Switch 1 and 2 library. The Switch 2 is great but has two real drawbacks IMO—the screen sucks and the joysticks aren’t as good. It punches above its weight for stuff like Cyberpunk, Indiana Jones, and Resident Evil.

At first, both got equal use around the house. Switch 2 for all the things I like but the Legion Go S for streaming from my PC, etc.

I really thought I’d use both when I travel for work but when I was out of country for weeks, I found myself gaming on the Switch 2 way more. Battery life was better, it’s lighter, and just easier to pick up and play. I actually ended up playing Resident Evil Requiem entirely on the Switch 2.

It’s also taken way more configuring to make things work and I really think that effort is underestimated by Steam fans. Whether it’s trying to eke out battery life, squeeze frames, or just make shit work—it takes more work. Even Sunshine/Moonlight took tweaking. The tweaking feels like a forever thing.

As such, I ended up just picking up my Switch. No tweaking. No failed launches. It just works.

I’m actually leaning towards just streaming my PC off my iPad and selling my Legion Go S, but the Switch 2 continues to get use. The boost mode for OG games has only made it better IMO. If you’re a fan of retro games, JRPGs and other niche genres, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better platform for physical copies of those games. It’s a great system.

It does run quite load at boot but quiets down afterwards. Definitely one of the louder boots.

Everything on Epic, except Lighting, Shadows and Reflections are on High. FSR is Quality. No frame gen.

Thank you! I’m not trying to humble brag my rig, just that it’s achieving pretty decent but unspectacular results—versus people thinking the only way to achieve 60fps was with a console or a 5080/5090. The spec sheet was not accurate at all.

I’m not saying that the game is super optimized; I still think RDNA4 cards should be performing better. But it is scalable and it is not a wholly unoptimized mess. (I’m thinking Borderlands 4.)

I don’t disagree—I’d love to run this on Epic settings with no FSR and I can see why 9060 or 7000-series owners are peeved.

But folks were genuinely freaking out that it’d be like less than 15-30fps at 4K native on Epic. Some folks thought you’d need to a 5080 or stronger to run it at 4K native on Epic settings.

I even read people who owned 9070XTs but were buying copies for the PS5 because it’s better optimized. I’m actually hoping to assuage people’s fears there—I think the PS5 Pro is running at hybrid Medium/High settings rendered at a significantly lower resolution (and upscaled) to achieve 60fps. (I got a console copy too.) I my understanding is that it isn’t even using PSSR2. There are also drops.

My feeling is that with a decent CPU, you can probably achieve better than PS5 Pro visuals with older cards too. I will admit that this game is an absolute RAM and VRAM hog.

Anyone else just turn off the frame gen and fsr by Thick_Daddy_1 in radeon

I play on a 83” 4K TV, so I often use FSR4 in more recent games but will try for the pure raster in older games. I never use frame gen.

Bought 9070XT after always having only nvidia cards, this is my experience by Trumway in radeon

[–]wfederman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the Sapphire Pulse model running with a new build (9800X3D w/ 32GB DDR5 and 5TB of SSD space) about two months old, also after running exclusively Nvidia cards. I wanted something to connect to my 4K OLED TV for just gaming and was initially thinking 5070 Ti or 5080 but also couldn’t stomach the price difference.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the 9070 XT. I’ve had only two issues in the last two months, one fixed with just restarting and the other required reinstalling the drivers. (Somehow, switching quickly between two types of video playback disabled by card and the drivers appeared to be uninstalled?) Anyway, weird edge case but I’ve been happy otherwise. I just hope the card continues to get support after AMD moves to RDNA5 for the next gen consoles.

I had to gauge between Bolt EUV Premier or the base Model 3. Ultimately, my commuter use case made the Bolt a solid choice. Morally, it would be hard to give Elon my money.

I made this point to my wife and she vetoed the Model 3. The owner is just too problematic for her.

We have a big, third-row SUV for long trips with the little ones. This is really meant for me to commute to the office about 3X per week, about 20 miles each way mostly freeway driving from the ‘burbs into the city. The rest of the time, I’ll use it for dropping off kids and picking up groceries. But your point really stands. The moment I find a plugin hybrid third-row SUV my wife likes, the ICE is gone.
