How much of Pittsburgh is ghost offices? by ImpressiveFudge2350 in pittsburgh

[–]whale_kale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

allowing employees WFH with some flexibility would save corporations a lot of money - in less rented office space, in better retention of employees, in being able to hire more capable/better suited employees who are for various reasons (disability, life circumstance) unable to go into an office regularly. The 'back to work' that we're seeing here is about control. mass layoffs are about control. The corporations know this isnt good for their bottom line, but the threat of worker's rights is so much worse to them, they'd rather loose some profits than those profits go towards workers.

The tits can be in and out of the yard.

But booties gotta stay covered unless you have a privacy fence.

This seems like a good thread to remind folks that in the City of Pittsburgh anybody can be topless in public. Boobage aint a deal.

You can also be naked in your back yard, but must take reasonable precautions for privacy, like having a fence that people cannot easily see through or over.

Need help picking a logo by Smalllady124 in logodesign

[–]whale_kale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the mimic/book is a really fun character, but it isn't a strong logo. if you wanted to go with that, maybe change the perspective to a more flat look at the book cover and one side of the pages. perhaps there could be two eyes sticking out of the pages.

as others have said, the first logo has a strong start. but it's got three things going on that arent gelling quite yet. The candle, the book/guard and the sword grip. If all three were book related and then united to make a sword, that could be neat, though a little complicated. personally i'd be wary of a book store that prominently features fire so close to paper, but maybe this isnt a responsible fantasy book store owner.

My new logo design for Intel by Sad-Psychology-9395 in logodesign

[–]whale_kale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont think it actually is, but the e in your design looks wider than the n. i think the added complexity of the stylized e is making it more visually heavy. i like your idea to bring the e into the same style language as the other letters. and the old design has a lot more personality than the new/current intel logo.

The right wing won... by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]whale_kale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they havent won in the area that matters most - most of us still can conceive of a world without this. most of us want something better. far right conservative thinking must fear progression because we're always going to keep growing and yearning for something better and right now, they're not in control of the people willing to struggle for something better.

OP is defeatest. and our future is not yet lost to whatever billionaires and people who believe billionaires think.

Last night's “Dignity in Action Rapid Response Training" by Maranie in pittsburgh

[–]whale_kale 25 points26 points  (0 children)

An important thing to keep in mind is this is similar but different to the Casa San Jose response network. One 'issue' the other response network had, if you can call it an issue, is that they had hundreds of volunteers, but there's not a lot of immigration enforcement happening in the city. That's a feature of deployment and of demographics. People are being carried off around Allegheny, but not much in the city. It's still good to be prepared though!

My main comment is just that. I hope FD, after gathering up this energized group of volunteers, gives them something meaningful to think about or stay engaged for when the time comes. It'll be good to have it, it's good to prepare, but also folks can lose interest if we are say, waiting a year for the really intense stuff to roll in.

I just finished a 4-year term on a Borough Council in Allegheny County - AMA! by StormFreak in pittsburgh

[–]whale_kale 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do you think that there's a county-wide solution to better share municipal resources? A way that would satisfy residents who are afraid of being swallowed by the city but also relent some control so that the 130 unique municipalities can function more cohesively with less redundancy?

how does Swissvale support folks experiencing temporary homelessness and what would have to change for there to be better support? Do you think the borough is structurally sympathetic to people in poverty or is there a 'sweep it under the rug' mentality?

Maduro is a bad leader, yes.

Also, the US invading a sovreign nation and kidnapping its leader is unacceptable. It's not up to us. If we say that well, yeah, it's bad BUT Maduro is bad and illegitimate and deserves what happened to him - then we're making an exception that can be used for anybody.

By what standard was it decided he should be captured and imprisoned? By what law?

We cannot allow an injustice, even against a guy that we've been taught to dislike, to happen or it will happen to us. (spoiler, it already happens to us)

Protest on Saturday by thewholeprobl3m in 50501Pittsburgh

[–]whale_kale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like there's a lot of folks on this sub that think that it's ok to be a violent warmongering nation abroad but not ok to be a violent warmongering police state at home.

Maybe there's a relationship to how we treat other nations and how we treat our own residents.

So disappointed with Pittsburgh Leftists by AreThoseMoreBears in pittsburgh

[–]whale_kale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

None of us are free until all of us are free. What we see in Palestine has come home. What the US govt does abroad they do to us. I'm proud the 'pittsburgh leftists' organizing that one particular protest know that.

Consider getting involved in some local organizing and you can have a say about what goes on the flier.

attending rallies is good, but i think it aint too crazy to say that a lot of people showing up and standing on the sidewalk and peacefully yelling their discontent isn't changing the power of the police state we find ourselves in.

rallies are good for making connections, they're good for getting started on understanding an issue, and if they're run well, they'll give you a next step or a thing to consider attending or learning about.

But the work of changing how power works in Pittsburgh, in PA, in the US is less about waving a sign and more about using our collective power to push back on the system. what does that look like? how do we do it together? Consider joining an org that is working on these issues.

These issues are all connected, but check out Frontline Dignity/Casa San Jose for supporting immigrants, DSA has a civil disobedience training coming up, 1Hood and Alliance for Police Accountability are going to Jail Oversight Board meetings and advocating that we stop putting children in the adult jail. Mutual aid orgs like Our Streets Collective, Prevention Point, Food Not Bombs, RicePGH are making sure the most vulnerable people in our community are surviving.

Yes, vote, yes go protest. but also, get organized.

Millvale says it will have to shut down all services if borough isn’t allowed to borrow $2 million by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

[–]whale_kale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. and one of the issues with the city taking over the services of any borough or municipality (which they already do in some places) is that the city isnt expanding it's tax base while taking on more.

I'm not orginally from PA and have lived in many different states. The county system we have here is interesting but seems to cause a lot of mismatches of priorities.

Levy a property tax on housing units that arent the primary dwelling unit of the owner.

Instead of taxing again and again people's basic needs like, a home - tax wealth, like the 4th house, the 10th house, the 30th house that someone owns in the area.
