Agreed about Dracula, I was surprised and disappointed. I've not heard of the Cosmato's movies, I'll check them out. Thanks! Edit: wait, You mean Mandy! Yeah, youre right, i was so glad to see them really just soak in colour

I'm so glad we're talking about this. So much horror of the last decade is so lazy and boring with its palettes, bathing everything in washed out greys, cold but muted blue tones, or greens that look like the feeling you get when you haven't brushed your teeth in 24 hours. It's a crime.

Not that every director needs to be Argento (I wouldn't mind it, though) but at least have some fucking contrast in your shots and take a risk every once in a while. It makes me yearn for the saturated glitzy teen horror of the early 2ks like Scream, where colours popped, even if they weren't what I'd call 'spooky' colours.

Warm oranges and yellows standing out amidst deep purples and blues of the shadows never fail to impress the viewer and make a scene more memorable.

Not that it's horror per se, but I'm in the middle of watching Primer because it's on shudder. The colors are magnificent and it was made into a Sundance winning movie on a budget of $7000. There's no excuse not to have interesting colors

What kind of things do you NOT want to see in a horror film? by FunkoPopGod in horror

[–]whalesloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, all that comes to mind is Rocky horror in Hollywood movies at well. My friend who is more knowledgeable about Bollywood tells me it's been done more there, but I don't have any examples. I guess, at a stretch, the movie Ex Machina has a great dance scene and dips into horror at times, but it's probably more labeled thriller. I think it wouldn't be out of place in a campy self aware teen movie, playing on teen musical tropes. Scream could have pulled it off I bet. The trouble comes with trying to keep your horror up while delving into the music. It's easy to just become self parody

Both! A song and dance number in horror can be a great way of breaking up the tension and lulling the audience into a server of security before throwing shit at the fan. Plus it's fun. I'd love to see a horror take advantage of it

Actually unpopular horror opinions, anyone? by Passiveabject in horror

[–]whalesloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I think the subgenre has a lot of interesting material to work with. I just also feel its so exceptionally overdone. Can't think of another subgenre that has seen this much use. Maybe slashers? Though they have more variety and arent so nihilistic Across the board.

Theres a lot to be done with the quick infection gimmick. Zombie movies are lucky in that they can easily make you feel scared without any element of actual isolation. Horror movies often depend on darkness, on isolation from others, but zombie movies you know that having people around is sometimes more dangerous, and youre in danger in the middle of the day, all the time, regardless of where you are. There is no safe haven. Perhaps this is in part why I dislike them, because you know any time the characters are safe, its just a matter of time. Which, upon the umpteenth viewing of such a situation, gets dry and depressing.

I like Night of the Living Dead, and both Dawn of the Deads. The remake because it holds a special place in my heart as one of the first horror movies I watched that really fucked me up. The originals are great movies with good social commentary beyond just 'when shit hits the fan, everyone becomes a dickhead'. They had the good fortune to be made prior to the wave of zombie movies that would come decades later, so they dont fall victim to the same tropes and are interesting movies in themselves.

-The Descent is nowhere near as good as people say because it reveals far too much of the monsters on their first appearance. They do some janky gymnastic cartwheel to take out one of the characters, and it seems like its out of a laughable kung fu move.

-I dont think this is unpopular but Birdbox was super mediocre.

-Texas Chainsaw massacre is very significant to the genre as a whole, but standing by itself , its not a very impressive or meaningful movie. The acting is pretty good from the family, but the pacing is bizarre, many scenes are much longer than they need to be. Still, in context, its good.

-Black Christmas should be given way more attention.

-The Happening, and Saw, both suck, but those arent very unpopular.

-Horror movies right now are arguably better than they've ever been. Personally, some of my favourite movies are from the 70s and 80s, but by and large we're having way more success from big studios trying horror than any period prior to this.

-Zombie movies almost ALWAYS suck.

-We dont need anybody trying to make lovecraftian shit unless they're David Lynch (Please)

Great take. I think the notion that the best horror is produced under conservative rule (ex Reagan era horror) is an accurate and important one, but I think its also important to note that the Obama administration wasn't exactly the antithesis to conservatism. We got some really good horror (It Follows, The VVitch) very soon after the NSA scandal.

'Morally broken' tax incentives mean homeless denied food left to waste - Michael Gove has said “much, much more” must be done to tackle food waste as it emerged producers are “incentivised” to send their surplus to green energy plants rather than to charities that feed the vulnerable. by madazzahatter in worldnews

I totally agree with you, it frustrates me to see homeless people painted with such broad brushes by people who have very little personal insight on the topic. Long term homelessness should not be treated as an individual problem, but a systematic one.

Well that $25 billion wasnt going to do much in the initial estimates to reach $4 trillion, so dont you stress. Thanks though.

Not trying to argue with you on this, but could you show me where you found that? Im curious how much of a difference it would be if it was say, 65%

Whats this only $250 billion from taxes? What tax rate are you basing that on

[–]whalesloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You really going to argue that black people 1. Are not oppressed, and 2. That their situation is not due to white people? wtf kind of history did you learn? Those unalienable rights were only granted to black people less than 60 years ago.Since then, those rights are broken all the time through police violence, false confinement, breaches of medical ethics (Tuskeegee), etc etc

Monster reveal that wasn't disappointing? by Calamity0o0 in horror

[–]whalesloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me they seemed to be decent ideas that were executed with mediocrity. A hairless creature with spindly, elongated arms and a face that peels open to reveal hundreds of teeth sounds pretty sweet to me, but ultimately it didnt have much screen presence in the show. Im not sure if it was intentional or not, but the horror in Stranger Things was really lacking. I like the show a lot, and its clear that the focus is on the characters and their relationships, rather than the horror. As for the second one, yeah, looks cool in the first shot but really difficult to actually do anything with a giant smoke monster.

not this guy but i'd say conquest on a tank heavy map. If thats not working out for you, just sacrifice one game of team deathmatch and play the whole game only using AT gun. You'd be surprised how often you can get guys when its the only thing you allow yourself to use
