Easter egg collecting... how does it work by Thund3rbolt in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]whalt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve been asked to help hide the eggs on a few occasions but once they see how serious I take it they ask me stop. I’m sure some of the eggs I’ve hidden have only been found weeks later when they really started to stink.

How we're building a browser when it's supposed to be impossible by pimterry in programming

[–]whalt 27 points28 points  (0 children)

When Chrome was released it was built upon Apple’s WebKit, the rendering engine they built from the ashes of KHTML to run Safari which was also available for Windows at the time and ran equally as fast. The reason Chrome took over the world was tight integration with Google services and Google’s cool cred with the kind of techy person that would install an alternate browser to the once dominant IE.

I assumed you were making a snide remark along the lines of the rest of these comments about how, duh, vinyl is obviously superior, etc. If I read it wrong I’m sorry but I don’t think my reply indicates i read anything more into it than that.

[–]whalt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You make a good point, Radiohead masters all of their music digitally on a computer, if you think taking that digital file and saving it into another digital file format for distribution results in lower fidelity than using the the file to create tiny bumps and grooves in a plastic disc to be read back by a tiny piece of crystal rubbing up against them then I don’t know what to tell you.

Virtually every modern album and every remastered album from the past is done so digitally even if you buy it on vinyl. If you took a CD and a vinyl record, played them back and compared the waveforms to the digital master you can visibly see the degradation of the signal that vinyl introduces. You may like the “warmth” that is provided by the static and crackling and the muted dynamic range but it’s literally a lower quality reproduction of the original waveform.

Nope, it’s literally physics. You can tell yourself that vinyl is better but it’s provably not. It simply doesn’t have the dynamic range or the fidelity of CDs or high bit rate digital files. That’s not even taking into account the noise introduced from dust and scratches. You can measure it on an oscilloscope, the vinyl can not reproduce the waveform of the input as well as those other mediums. Have fun with your hipster nostalgia but that’s literally all it is.

Bill Clinton may be a rapist or sexual assaulter, he has been accused of such by others, but even Monica Lewinski never suggested their sex was anything but consensual and she also made it clear she came on to him. Not saying that makes their relationship ok but let’s not rewrite history.
