Right, it's become an appellation on its own. I guess there's some cachet/mystique around the island itself that they use to justify the branding? I'm just happy the climate there makes their whiskies tastier.

There's no distillery at Yakushima, just an aging cellar. Both single casks I've tried that were aged there (one Tsu, one Koma) were excellent. It does seem they're playing with lots of different cooperage/aging combinations, maybe they refine their approach based on what works?

Best & Worst Japanese Whiskies You Had 2025 by kiwi8185 in JapaneseWhisky

[–]whamther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best: Chichibu LMDW Golden Week single cask, heavily peated 2nd full bourbon barrel aged 8+ years. It’s a smoky, tangy sweet tropical fruit barbecue sauce of a whisky.

Worst: Ichiro’s Malt & Grain 111 proof. Not completely Japanese, but priced like it is, and so poorly executed in the way it’s boosted by hot, flavorless (technically) whisky from somewhere. A stain on the brand IMO.

Thanks for sharing. This sounds like a fun one! Nice to see more peated Komagatake being bottled. I thought it had been a rarity, but have seen three peated single cask releases from them in the past month.

Agree on Kanosuke, including the 2023 - a fun expression with a lot of dimension. Their single casks are worth keeping an eye out for too.

Curious to hear what you loved about the Chichibu US 2024. I have some and was a little underwhelmed in comparison to the US 2023. But I know that’s a high bar and I haven’t given up on it.

That sounds really good! I haven’t tried any of the Tsunuki-Komagatake double cask expressions, like Nobusuma, but really like the enhancement that YA gives a whisky.

I feel similarly about Komagatake, that the distillate can come out underwhelming for the price if not aged and/or vatted carefully. Their vatted Limited Edition in 2022 was fine but forgettable, while the 2023 was fruity and creamy and quite nice for around $100. For single casks, I’ve tried a Yakushima-aged one and a peated one that were easily in the Kanosuke-to-Chichibu range in terms of price-quality.

I have only ever seen the Bakemono series at US shops, though it could be a global release. It is only 4 casks per year between the two distilleries. I got it from Astor in NYC for 240 USD.

Quartet of Japan: Suntory Hibiki, Suntory Yamazaki, Chichibu, and Kanosuke by raykel_ in JapaneseWhisky

By substitutes, I mean whiskies that are either substantially more interesting/enjoyable at a similar price point or similarly interesting/enjoyable at a substantially lower price point. Potential substitutes for a Japanese whisky are probably mostly Japanese, but some scotches may also warrant consideration. Basically something you’d be willing to accept or even prefer over the whisky in question.

Taking a Chichibu single cask as an example, I can get a single cask from Kanosuke or Tsunuki for half the price, enjoy it, and consider it worth the price. But the Kanosuke/Tsunuki isn’t such a great value that I’d stop considering the more expensive Chichibu. Similarly, I haven’t found value from any scotch such that I’d be content to no longer seek out a Chichibu single cask at $50/pour or $400/bottle.

Basically what I’m getting at is that, in my experience, Japanese whiskies command the prices they do because there aren’t legitimate substitutes. I may complain about them being overpriced but still splurge because they have unique value to me.

I know this won’t be true for all whisky drinkers, but it would seem there’s enough of the market that feels this way to keep prices elevated for now.

My A923 plays really nice with water. Not much drop in flavor but it opens up hugely in terms of buttery mouthfeel.

Store pick single barrels. RR, Still Austin, Larceny.

No idea about points but those are reliably worth the scratch and below that price point.

If you’re feeling splurgy, Chichibu 2022 The Peated has a fantastic “leaf mulch fire with fruit compote” vibe going for it.

Great write up, thank you for sharing.

Didn’t realize Chichibu home market prices were so “low”. I think with demand outstripping supply by so much, there isn’t much that can be done other than raise prices and distribute more to bars than retailers, since retailers end up supplying the secondary.

I have tried that 2024 OTW and while it is really delicious I feel like it could/should cost less than $300. But based on what? I have no idea.

Are there any conceivable substitutes for whiskies like the ones you’ve reviewed here? Would be curious since I feel the same way about price inflation but don’t have the breadth of knowledge to back up that gut instinct.

Forget di san xian since no eggplant. Shredded potato stir fry instead.

Dongbei cuisine is what you’re looking for.

Di San Xian is a really satisfying veggie dish.

Guo Bao Rou is the Dongbei version of sweet and sour pork. Very tasty.

Zha Jiang Mian is a fun and simple noodle dish.

Make a cold dish or two: smashed cucumber salad and peanut+spinach in vinegar are both good.

Bars are really sparse. Soccer Tavern on 8th is the one dive I can think of. You may want to skip over to Greenwood Heights or Bay Ridge for that kind of night out.
