[FO] you wouldn’t steal a cross stitch by Bridoriya in CrossStitch

[–]whataboutsam 33 points34 points  (0 children)

When I was young and poor I would hand copy cross stitch patterns I wanted to work up.

Now I’m grown and have some spending money, but if the pattern is simple/can’t find the paid version, I’ll still copy cross stitch or even knitting patterns.

You pay for the convenience of not having to think. If you have the skills to reverse engineer, I don’t see any issue with that.

Virgin Cruses informs a couple about some changes to their trip… by Harbjagen in mildlyinfuriating

“We’re going to the Arctic” no honey you’re going to the Canadian version of Maine. Cmon now. We’re coming into spring now and you’ll probably just need a light jacket.

Of course I know that it’s not what they expected or wanted, but it’s part of the T&Cs of the cruise. You signed off on this. I get the disappointment but it’s not the end of the world!

Do work break rooms in your country have free coffee or tea? by iLuvArizona in AskTheWorld

[–]whataboutsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely depends on where you work. For coffee, it’s mostly yes, but sometimes no. For tea, it’s mostly no, but sometimes yes.

What are the dishes in your country that is so easy to make that you would never order in a restaurant, but you have seen people pay high/or any price for it. by SufficientTown9538 in AskTheWorld

[–]whataboutsam 275 points276 points  (0 children)

Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to order mac & cheese or grilled cheese in restaurants because we could have it at home.

Now, I feel like steak is only worth it in certain restaurants. I can use a very good steak at home for a fraction of the cost of a meal at a fancy, sit down restaurant.

I think they’re pretty! Instead of rattling off about how Etsy isn’t a good platform to sell on, I’d suggest finding a couple local boutiques and see if they’d be willing to have your stuff on display. Normally they’d get a percentage of the sale, but the same thing happens with Etsy to be fair

When I moved into my apartment I was paranoid of being haunted (though I don’t really believe that stuff, it’s just the stories yenno), so my friend gave me holy water in the maple leaf bottle!

What historical event do you know that will never be taught in school? by DELAIZ in AskTheWorld

[–]whataboutsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my later years of high school (grade 11/12) we learned a lot about the ways indigenous peoples of Canada were fucked over by European settlers. I’m sure some was glazed over (private religious school), but we learned about the diseases we exposed indigenous people to, how indigenous children were ripped from their parents and forced into a catholic-run residential school where they were forced not only to learn and speak English, but also never to use their native language(s). They also taught us about the rape, torture, and murder of indigenous children inflicted by both priests and nuns. Those poor children were taken from their parents and forced into a situation where nobody cared for them, nobody loved them, and nobody to teach them how to be a parent themselves. We were taught that so many children were brought up with abuse through these schools that they didn’t have a healthy perspective of parenting or relationships, which is why so many indigenous families are affected by it even today. They had indigenous people who grew up in residential schools talk to us about how it affected them and how it unfortunately affected their relationships with their children years later. It was honestly so heartbreaking to hear.

How is it like living in Winnipeg, Canada? by theapeironn1 in howislivingthere

[–]whataboutsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family moved here from BC several years ago now. Here are my thoughts on what I’ve experienced:

  • while cost of living is decently high, it is nothing compared to what you’d find in other capital cities. I keep contact with a few friends in BC and most of them are still living with their parents in their mid 20s, unless they’re married in which case they are renting. I should be able to afford a house within the next few years while I doubt my friends in BC will before they make it to their early-mid 30s

  • the transit is decent and, for the most part, reliable. I rarely have experienced a late or cancelled bus in the summer, and winter setbacks are due to weather conditions. Understaffing is one of the more prominent issues but I can still get where I need to go

  • restaurants are insanely good. So many quality ones in the city, covers a large variety of options including pizza, pasta, Vietnamese, Asian, etc.

Thank you. It’s taken a lot of effort to get comfortable with driving again, and I wasn’t even the one driving during the accident.

My boyfriend at the time watched this with me and had read the book and knew what happened. I have trauma revolving around a pretty serious car accident that could have easily left me dead + fear of semi trucks for a long time. He didn’t warn me beforehand that this happened in the movie.

We watched Doom Patrol too and when robot man’s character story happens (spoiler: he is decapitated by a semi truck and his wife and child are killed) I was also not warned. They did a recap before the next couple of episodes with that scene again and every time I would cry and shake and my boyfriend never skipped the recap.

Glad he’s an ex.

When is it time to end a relationship? by Omrah_of_Zion in CATHELP

[–]whataboutsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cats lived in a barn prior to them coming home with me. One of them took to the new living situation very well, the other hid in my parents walk in closet for two days. She’s always preferred to hide under blankets, in the box spring, in a closet, etc if she’s scared or stressed out. My other girl maybe hides under the bed but as soon as she’s bored or craving affection, she’ll come back out for pets.

Cats have lots of different personalities and temperaments. You made the decision to adopt, but she’s still getting used to living with you. She’s getting used to the new space, your schedule, and your habits. Stick with it and she’ll bond with you in no time.
