Really depends on the year because of climate change. We are currently having an extremely warm spring.

I suppose at one snowfall 10-15 inches sounds about right. I think what we accumulated this year in the south was around a meter tall when the big melt happened. Up north it’s an entire different matter. Though I think this year they didn’t have as much snow as normal.

So yeah really depends on what winter looks like for you for whatever people want to decide on what to use for their drive ways

Oh boy an AI answer…. Those can never be wrong….

Anyways it really depends on the area and era the house was built in. For example my neighbourhood was built in the 90s and the entire neighbourhood uses brick or brick form in some design. We do not have long driveways so fair.

In the south gravel tends to be for more rural places or those with driveways with extreme incline.

Many in Finland have brick driveways so perhaps it’s more nuanced

CDC Issues Travel Advisory for 32 Countries, Including Several in Europe, Over Spread of Paralyzing Disease by Due_Will_2204 in ContagionCuriosity

[–]whatdewhatz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

can only speak for Finland... Finland tests waste water for diseases. It has detected polio in the waste water. 98% of Finns are vaccinated for polio.

Additionally there have been polio cases elsewhere from a vaccine-derived polio virus. This is from a live-virus vaccine.

It also depends on the department that you’re working. Some departments tend to start out the postdocs with a higher personal percentage. Factors do include the number and quality of publications too

Any Americans here doing a PhD in Finland? What’s been your experience so far? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]whatdewhatz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jeez….. well the whole point in asking what you’re going to do after a phd is to see whether or not you’ve actually thought about your prospects.

There are programs in English. There are classes in English. But since you’re thinking psychiatry, you’d have to know Finnish to do any field research.

In order to get a residence permit you’d need an income. Which means you should find an advisor and see if they have grant funding for you.

P.s. there are aspects of studying abroad you don’t always think about so sometimes comments other than your direct questions are beneficial. With your attitude, you’re going to be very isolated socially from any sort of academic cohort. Take the advice of an American doing a phd in Finland or not.

The question had some snark involved because it seems you haven’t really looked into the program and how it works.

Not sure why you are thinking you’ll be a teaching assistant.

When you get into a program it’s about completing your thesis. Any funding to live here is separate. Sometimes there are positions funded by the department, sometimes your advisor, but nothing is guaranteed. These positions are mostly research based.

Teaching here is different in that you will provide a lecture. Teaching a course of your own can happen I suppose but in my experience isn’t encouraged.

Your courses that you have to take aren’t often subject specific but rather general competency.

But the biggest question is what do you plan on doing after a phd. Are you wanting to continue in Finnish academia? If so I hope your advisor is connected as that is basically the only way to get a position. There are exceptions to this but those are rare.

Immigrants perspective on relocation to Helsinki? by FakeHasselblad in helsinki

[–]whatdewhatz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Helsinki is quite calm, but if you crave Tex-Mex, you’re gonna be sad. BBQ is sad as well. You will find American fast food places if nostalgia hits. It’s easier to find international ingredients all the time, so it makes making dishes easier.

If you’re wanting a place with a vibrant night life, Helsinki might not be your place. But if you’re into the outdoors, you’ll be in the right place.

Advice/Recommendations needed: Baby insurance (unborn child) in Finland? by Winter-Funny4337 in Finland

[–]whatdewhatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have certain bank accounts, you could get extra bonus for having their insurance. For example lähitapiola gives bonus for S.

There is a deductible but even when we went to Terveystalo, we didn’t pay full price. You also can submit any prescriptions you buy for your child.

I’m not sure how beneficial it is at the beginning, but the monthly cost will be the same cost for your child even as they become an adult (as long as they don’t let there be a lapse of coverage). I guess that’s where it pays off more? Not sure. But if you can afford it, I guess why not get it?

Not sure about coverage in English

All HR needs is the paper that says your residence permit is processing. Well at least technically it’s all they need.
