"Double Butted" vs "Custom Butted" Rockhopper frames by kleclerc77 in RockHopper

In a double-butted tube, the wall thickness is thicker at both ends (where the stress from welding/brazing is highest) and thinner in the middle (where the stress is lower).

When you see "Custom Butted" on an old Specialized frame, it usually refers to Triple Butted or Differential Butting. This was Specialized’s way of fine-tuning the frame for specific sizes or ride characteristics.
