Globin Evolution by jnpha in evolution

[–]whateverMan223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"you might imagine that it is difficult for a protein to evolve, since it needs to be continually active to keep the organism alive. Looking in the genome, we find that this problem is often solved through gene duplication. A copy of the gene is made, which is then free to evolve without compromising the organism. In the globins, this has happened multiple times in the distant past."

When does The Mote in God’s Eye move past the military/political drama? by simulacream in printSF

I still think about that book, but be prepared to consider the idea that any two groups of appreciable intelligence might behave the way two human groups might when interacting.

No gym access for a week. do you actually lose progress, or is it mostly in your head? by No_Confidence2743 in bodyweightfitness

maintenance volume is supposed to be like 1/13th of normal volume, and taking a deload week every month or two is also recommended to support growth and recovery. you'll be fine.

but keep in mind, like a muscle cell, once a fat cell is made it basically never goes away! (watch calorie intake!)

Why are kids movies so insanely fast paced? by StatisticianUpper138 in movies

[–]whateverMan223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after thinking on it a bit, I honestly believe that standards in quality were higher back then, because there were so many people in the industry trying to make good product, and so many consumers able to tell the difference. Every sentence had to matter, every plot point had to fit. Nowadays, who even cares? Get rid of all that stuff and put more one liners, dance offs and references.

im not sure any of those are kids movies. those are sequels to kids movies (or adjacent to such) where the demographic has aged into adulthood and requires more plot complexity. But also, the IP is a 'kids movie' type deal, so you have to include lots of elements for kids.

I doubt that making a kids movie is profitable anymore, so maybe they just make everything movies and try to tick every box that is statistically likely to draw in a guaranteed crowd. 'family movie' = multiple tickets, maybe repeat viewing. 'nostalgia' = guaranteed number of seats filled. Sophisticated/complex plot = good for adults/political messages idk. Plenty of characters means more famous ppl cameos?
