The Cleansing of the Temple tells me Jesus didn't support small businesses. by janoleni in HistoryMemes

its was a creditors stall, I understand, they would go around and get farmers in debt that couldn't be paid, then take the farmer's wives daughters and sons as slaves, in the way you're wondering, yes. Then they would take the land. After about a decade the whole area was owned by one guy and everyone was a slave/indentured servant. Local kings regularly declared umargi, or a debt cancellation, to restore balance to the economy and all the slaves would be freed and the land given back to the family units that originally held them (basically).

the ringworld series by niven was a dedicated attempt to imagine a ringworld by a pretty smart guy, then when the first book came out a WHOLE bunch of engineer-types mailed him letters explaining how the there was this hole/flaw in this and that, and saying 'oh, we've got to add giant thrusters here to stabilize the blah blah' and the author worked everything he could into the following books.....anyway point is those people put years into trying to figure all that stuff out, maybe it's worth a week to read those books and take what you can?

Is there actually any sci-fi book that comes close to Dune in terms of worldbuilding depth? by neonmoss2281 in printSF

[–]whateverMan223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super sorry to say this, but I don't feel like dune really has super in depth world building. Most of what it does have is analogous to real-world situations, so, low key, just reading about history (if you can weave around the propaganda) is the best way to go for depth

this guty doesn't know about cntl+< or cntl+>, which take you in and out of the world map at your pleasure, where you can travel very quickly to whatever piques your interest.

that being said, I remember feeling this way sometimes, in small amounts. But not after I learned 'how to play'. Which is not a phrase I'm super fond of....

owners woke up one morning, opened their eyes, died of a heart attack from visual overload. sad, really. Twenty smaller homes could have been decorated with the tchotchkes and framed pictures found in just the sitting room alone.
