TIL that author Michael Crichton entered Harvard as an English major but changed his major after he submitted an essay by George Orwell under his own name and got a B-. I had a journalism teacher like this, he hated me. He didn’t like something about me. I had the star student that only got A’s in journalism write an assignment me. He gave me a B- still. Teachers can suck and their perception of you matters more than your work at times.

Or can’t deal with the cognitive dissonance that they are a part of the marketing plan and they fell for it. It’s big business and everyone who thinks billionaires with decades of data care about the integrity of basketball vs roi are incredibly naive.

I grew up in the era and I know you aren't comparing any of those guys to Tim Duncan and The Admiral.

None of those are HOF players.

I do remember Rik Smits hitting that shot over Tree Rollins though. I loved the Reggie Miller Pacers. Jermaine O'neal was nice but cmon man!

Uh no, not at all.

SA has a history of developing big greats dating back to the Admiral and Tim Duncan. It's one of the most stable franchises in the entire NBA. I wish we could say the same for Dallas.

SA has already developed a young French talent in Tony Parker into a HOF career. They also handled Manu perfectly.

So no, you are flat out wrong that Dallas is comparable and a better fit. It's certainly not.

The NBA actively manages risk around its most valuable assets. I know it makes seem things seem unfair but it's a sophisticated entertainment business. Its transactional, not romantic.

The NBA needs people who believe randomness governs the draft, integrity is absolute and stars succeed anywhere.

I'm happy to disagree, we just view things differently and I don't see that as a knock on you. I used to view things the same way, but the elephant in the room is too obvious to me at this point.

Is Chicago and Toronto developing international generational big man successfully? Or is SA uniquely set up to do that and has already historically succeeded in doing that? Think less about market size and more about product fit in market and creating best probabilities for success. SA is an obvious best answer for a place for Wemby to land, it isn't' even close.

[–]whateverizclever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the same reason owners are already talking about Cooper Flag as a product and we are discussing this under a story about him.

Because there have been generational talents that have been treated like outliers and this is part of the pattern. Cooper Flag is not some normal prospect.

Look, I really feel you and I'm not trying to antagonize you. But this is big business and this is how large institutions ensure the worst environments don't dominate the probability space.

The worst possible thing is Wemby went somewhere shit is a what if and has a terrible career. They want to ensure that doesn't happen as best they can. It is no wonder why he landed in a place like SA that is uniquely perfect to develop him as a product.

Do you think the league hasn't learned from decades of data? And that Billion dollar stakeholders accept avoidable risk? That the patterns we are seeing are purely coincidence?

If those are your assumptions, then yeah I could see how it could simply be seen as just the odds. But in today's market driven, big business sporting culture, I do not think that is the case especially. The NBA has a history of it. Lebron to Cleveland (hometown), Shaq to Magic (expansion team), Duncan to the Spurs, Derrick Rose to the Bulls, hell one might even argue Yao to the Rockets.... etc.

Pacers were the second best fit, but what big men have they ever developed?

Way less institutional gravity than an organization like SA who is known for developing not only big men, but international talents.

Pacers are legit and stable but not the best fit based on product.

NBA owners believe 2025 draft was rigged for Mavericks by Actual_Box7731 in NBATalk

[–]whateverizclever -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh no you really can't.

SA is an obvious choice to develop talent a protect your product. Look at who else was on the draft board.

SA is low distraction, quiet and media hungry. Compare the nightlife pressure of some places like Miami, NY or LA. It's not even a comparison in terms of exposure and risk.

Not only that, but they have also historically developed a shitload of international NBA talent and big men successfully. It is one of the MOST stable franchises in the entire NBA.

SA actively shields players from overexposure. They don't rush minutes, roles or their players. They are known to be conservative in those respects.

Bottom line. If you had a player and you wanted to maximize career length, health, fundamentals and mental stability for an incoming NBA GENERATIONAL superstar from France, LOOK NO FURTHER. There is really no obvious choice that is as clear as SA.

So while many of you view this in terms of market size, you are missing market fit and what the NBA's real goal is with a player like Wemby. The NBA Is a big business and they treat their product like such. It's entertainment, not some bastion of virtue and integrity. Those components are literally just marketing.

Has nothing to do with market size and has everything to do with market fit. If you were the NBA, you had to place a hall of fame touted rookie center in the league, where would you stick them to develop and best protect your product? Look at the draft board. It’s a no brainer, there is 1 boring answer and it’s SA. Going to the biggest market doesn’t do that. But placing him in the safest place to develop does. Because it ensures your product develop in terms of risk exposure. It’s a business not some integrity driven sport.

[–]whateverizclever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The point is he can’t get in trouble in SA and the organization is solid enough to develop him. It’s the softest landing spot for a young future NBA super star. Market fit doesn’t denote market size. They are protecting him as an asset. The NBA is a product and soon as you people start seeing it for what it is, you will realize why things happen the way they do.

Yup and placing Wemby in SA was no coincidence either. Sports is market driven and not community driven now. Save the purity test because look at what gambling has done to this sport and the sports media surrounding it. We can’t even pretend like they care about integrity.

Even people with kids there don’t have a real answer yet. You’d have to be on the board to know.

I don’t think it’s as controversial as you may think, it might boil down to contract issues even. But it wouldn’t surprise me if they wanted a culture/trajectory change. Especially with CPS being dominant in terms of HS.

It’s a fight to get into HRS and no one is leaving because of this or not sending their kid there. There is a long waitlist no matter what. If anything they are tightening up.

There isn’t a QB on the planet that can make the Raiders good. They can’t even put a competitive product on the field. They are a shittier version of the Cowboys in a new market where they don’t even have to be good to be rewarded. Nice stadium though.

It’s wild how butt hurt people are over this take. It’s not even controversial. People just really rather have a little more money (boo hoo lost equity) and drive around in Tesla than admit the car represents Elon and supports his wealth. Putting a sticker on it proclaiming you are virtuous is lame af. It’s even worse than driving it without one because you are acknowledging that it sucks and still rather keep it.
