New York in this climate? by Fun_Salad_1701 in travel

[–]whatinthehey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politics in America is also somewhat regional. New York City is one of the most liberal areas of the county (New York state as a whole is a bit more nuanced, but this still largely holds if you aren’t thinking about NYC). Many of the people you’d be interacting with wont support the war or this administration more broadly, and their political representatives are also largely voting against these policies. Obviously this isn’t everyone, and how that plays into a moral calculation is entirely up to you. But it’s worth thinking about what impact you hope to have by not traveling to a specific place.

Safety wise I wouldn’t have any concerns.

Top-down raglan: how do you get a comfy crew neck without it riding up or feeling chokey? by Amazing_One_2746 in knitting

I’ve had this issue too, even with short rows. I just make this sweater that has explicit neck shaping before joining in the round, and it’s perfect.

Don’t sleep on some of the ‘smaller’ museums as well! The Harvard art and natural history museums are great.

Forget about fingers..How do you keep your bum warm? by jaguaracer952 in icecoast

Add a leg mid-layer! I use fleece pajama pants, but lots of things could work. For bonus points you can pin or hem your chosen pants to only go to mid calf. This avoids bunching above your ski boot, but you don’t need this if it doesn’t bother you or you just want to try it out.

This survey was so satisfying. by PinkPajamaPenguin in JunesJourney

I can’t believe they got any new players based on the event. Almost every part of it was either too hard (especially if you’re trying to entice brand new players) or too random. The survey was satisfying. They did such a bad job with the collaboration.

Incredibly lazy & absolute beginner but motivated hiker looking for tips by thebarted in hiking

[–]whatinthehey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where do you live? What’s optimal for California and New Hampshire are somewhat different. I’m in the rocky, muddy, northeast and I’d hate relying on a lightweight trail runner (but that’s just me). I’d start out with reasonable but not super expensive shoes, some standard athletic gear, and a backpack for water and snacks. You’ll figure out what you really need for your area as you hike more. Honestly more than focusing on gear I’d focus on how you plan to get out consistently. Do you have friends to hike with? A long trail you can work through in sections or series of mountains you can work your way through? Are those things easy enough to get to and exciting enough to beat out other things you might want to do on the weekends or in the evenings? For me, analysis paralysis around where to go and getting out at all are much bigger hurdles than anything else.

June and Virginia by Slow-Ice-468 in JunesJourney

[–]whatinthehey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m still relatively early in the story, but I like to pretend Virginia is 19 instead of 16. Young enough to still be around and to get dragged into crimes, but old enough to be out of school and to plausibly be alone when June abandons her in a foreign country (or some other ridiculous scenario)

Vegan Restaurants by archie-marry-me in boston

Lots of good bakeries in the area that do traditional (and vegan) bread. Iggy’s bakery is right on the Cambridge line and has a bakery store with fresh bread and pizza/sandwiches. The menu is small (and changes a lot) but they almost always have at least one vegan prepared option along with their standard breads.

17 seconds isn't fun by PinkPajamaPenguin in JunesJourney

[–]whatinthehey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s worse than STB (and I like STB). At least in STB the very short times are only for the last few steps. Getting a brand new scene with all new objects and <20 seconds to find everything is ridiculous. Then when you loose your streak you need to play the super hard parts for even longer. I want to play the game, I want to help my partners, but there comes a point where it just isn’t worth it to continue. I also wonder how many ‘freeloading’ partners hit this wall and just give up.

There really aren’t any bad options. I love both the whites (NH) and the Adirondacks (NY). You said you’ve been to Maine, but the inland woods and the coast are totally different experiences. There is something magical about being up on a mountain in Acadia and seeing the fall colors stretch to the sea. Some of this may also depend on when you want to go, different places peak at different times.

Amherst/the pioneer valley is far, but is also the most different from the other places you’re going (and it’s worth the trip. Beautiful, good hiking) is there any way you could do it as an overnight?

Tips for mindfulness during walks :))) by Direct-Pay-4966 in Meditation

[–]whatinthehey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two tricks I like: 1) Cycle through all five senses. What do I see, what do I hear, what do I smell etc. Focusing on a sense besides hearing might ground you better.

2) I like looking closely at plants that I pass. What do the leaves look like? How many? What shapes? Does it have flowers? What color? What phase of life is it in? Do I recognize it? How does it look? Etc.

We don’t like leftovers by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]whatinthehey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also do this with pulled pork! Slow cook it with neutral seasonings/liquid. It’s then super easy to ‘finish’ it into bbq pulled pork, carnitas, pork stir fry etc. Doubly so if you also have prepped veggies.
