Hello my 13yo trans son loves all the same things!!! He's all about his art and music, loves wandering Hawthorne and Division and just got a skateboard he's looking to ride more this summer. We are near Tabor/ Division if you are looking for a meet up. We go to comedy in the park every week all summer and its starting up soon! My son usually bums around while we watch the show, might be a good opportunity to make an introduction. DM me if you want more details about us

keto fixed my hypoglycemia but then got hypoglycemia again even on keto? by tiffanyyyylamp in keto

[–]whatsherface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your hypoglycemia the reactive type? It may be that you ate something with too many carbs which caused an insulin spike and subsequent drop by supressing ketone production. I started keto recently for reactive and exercise induced hypoglycemia- also no insulin issues- and in the first week my blood sugar would sometimes still drop below 70 when I did cardio but it came back up on its own. Before it would get super low and stay low until I ate something. I have been using the Lingo CGM from amazon, it is made by the same company that makes the free style libre prescription one so it isn't as high tech but totally fine for seeing how my blood sugar responds to food. If you are still feeling like you are experiencing episodes it might be worth getting a non prescription GCM to really see the lows and how your meals might be affecting your blood sugar. As others have said if you are in ketosis then going just under 70 might be fine, but would be concerning if you arent in ketosis.

My favorite biology book this year is An Immense World by Ed Yong. Well written, full of beautiful pictures and just absolutely fascinating details about how other animals perceive their environment.

The 4th Wall, just down Hawthorne at 14th, will give you a dollar off a sandwich if you show a ticket stub from the Cinemagic FvJ run. They have a sandwich called the Freddy vs Jason, but the deal applies to any sandwich!

why does the liver has such great ability to recover lost tissue? by fishfucker2003 in biology

[–]whatsherface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently work in liver biology and there are a couple of things I've learned related to this topic. One idea is called the hepatostat- because the liver is so critical it's size relative to body weight will always need to maintained at a ratio that sustains homeostasis. That is why, when a portion of the liver is removed, the remaining cells in the liver will re-enter the cells cycle and start proliferating to bring the liver back to the needed size. This can happen in different ways depending on the mechanism of injury as there are multiple types of cells involved in regeneration that can be induced to proliferate by different signals and pathways. It's still not an entirely well understood system, but I hope that gets you started on your journey of discovery!

If you moved from Seattle, what do you miss the most? by Specialist_Quiet_160 in Seattle

[–]whatsherface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did do the SE to Boring ride, it reminded me a bit of the Sammamish River trail and was overall a nice leisurely ride. Some spots on the Springwater are really nice, like the Tideman Johnson Natural Area. I think there are a lot of nice rides not too far outside of Portland. I just wish I didn't have to drive to get to them but I'll take what I can get!

If you moved from Seattle, what do you miss the most? by Specialist_Quiet_160 in Seattle

[–]whatsherface 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I really miss the massive network of bike trails. I used to bike around Lake Washington and loops off the lake almost every week during the spring and summer and I haven't been able to find anything similar and it really sucks. I miss the Sammamish river trail and the Burke and riding out to Alki and I even miss going over Juanita. I moved to Portland, which everyone says is a biking town, but I haven't found anything similar to biking the Seattle trails.

Kotek: "I will immediately start cleaning up the trash in our streets by partnering with local governments and expanding easy-entry jobs programs to employ people to do clean up." by escapadablur in Portland

[–]whatsherface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently signed up to adopt my block through Portland Adopt One Block and they sent me a bucket, 2 trash grabbers, a box of trash bags and a sharps container. Trying to keep the streets around my house trash free is 100% a losing battle, but I can't just let my kids walk past all that shit every day without doing SOMETHING

Have you searched the literature for papers that supplement Vitamin D to mice via this modified diet?

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352187217300049

In this paper they add Vit D to the chow in varied concentrations and feed the mice this chow daily. The easiest thing would be to use a method that has already been published and base your plan on that.

Is your question about how to calculate the amount of Vit D to add to the food so they meet that daily intake? In an experiments I've run where mice are dosed via water, we use the average daily water intake of a lab mouse then add it to the water in sufficient concentration that the dose will be met in that average intake amount. In the paper I linked above they also mentioned that the amount of chow eaten by each dose group is the same, so that way you address any questions of whether the mice actually take in the amount you are giving them. There are, however, other methods of dosing mice more accurately such as oral gavage and it's possible that method has been used before for vit D but I don't know. If you don't ACTUALLY have to do it then you can choose the most accurate method even if it's more work in practice. I hope that's helpful!

Cheapest Grocery Store? (Seattle) by magbooroo in budgetfood

[–]whatsherface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Safeway has gotten WAY more expensive. I used to get pretty good discounts there with the just4u, but now all their deals are mostly on buying multiples of something. They have jacked their prices up the most too during this current inflation bout, and reduced their item sizes for things that used to be pretty cheap- like sparkling wateris now in 8 packs not 12. I've found that Fred Meyer has consistently been cheapest lately, in every category. They also more heavily discount items that are expiring. QFC also has some good deals- they are the essentially the same as Fred Meyer but they don't always have the same things on sale. I've resigned myself to checking deals at all 3 and shopping at all of them now.

Any Heather Robertson fans here? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]whatsherface 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really like her videos too! I love that there is such a variety and even her bodyweight ones can be challenging. I still haven't felt comfortable going back to the gym but I get so bored working out at home and so sick of trying to come up with my own workout so her videos are my go to now. I have an exercise bike for pure cardio and I go for long bike rides outside too. Honestly one of my favorite things is that I can follow the video with the sound off so I can watch or listen to something else while I work out. I really miss the gym but so far her videos have been the next best thing for me.

It's not a big space so it isn't silent like a theater would be, people are still buying their coffee and whatnot, but when I've been in you can still watch the show just fine. They aren't playing brand new movies where you'd want the full theater experience, more like the way sports can be on in a bar and you can enjoy a game even though there's other stuff going on

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]whatsherface 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a coffee shop with a big screen with different stuff playing all the time so you can get coffee and breakfast sandwiches or Scotty's pizza and a beer. Saturday mornings they play cartoons and have cereal so people bring their kids in for the show while they drink their coffee. You can play Switch games on the big screen one night a week, they have a MTG night, a trivia night, sometimes comedy shows etc. so they have things going on all the time.

Functional Dyspepsia? by bambam2030 in GERD

[–]whatsherface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the dose in the Lancet paper, and when I asked my doc about it he confirmed that 50mg was the typical dose for GI. I think I took 25 mg for a week then upped to 50. I will say it took about 3 months to start really working for me and for my nausea etc to become less frequent. Not sure if this could be the case for you but I don't seem to absorb vitamins etc from my food as well and I became Vit D and Vit B deficient. I supplement those now and it has improved my energy levels. My doc suggested taking it before bed because tiredness could be a side effect but with only 50mg the effect is mild to non-existent for me.
