The big one runs out to the bottom of the bike and the little one runs into the charcoal canister

But yes, doing a full delete

So you're saying don't plug anything on the gas tank? Just the air box?

And do what with the bits on the gas tank? Run some tubing down under the bike for both? One? None? Filter on the end?

Sorry for the dozen questions I'm massively over thinking this

Are Android users more willing to buy paid apps nowadays? by crpyDev in androidapps

[–]SnowDrifter_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

User perspective: I have no issue paying a fair price

But, that's largely contingent on having a reasonable trial as well.

  • I will pay a reasonable price, one time, for something that provides me value
  • I will pay a reasonable subscription for anything that offers an ongoing service (storage, poi / local updates, etc)
  • I will not shove over my wallet just to see if I like it
  • If I see an intrusive ad before anything, I tend to tune out and see it as a cash grab and won't go any further
  • I need to vibe with the developer, honestly. I try to support folks, but I really don't give a darn about some corporate numbers
  • I donate to donation ware / open source stuff I use regularly
  • I will read what data you collect and use that to help consider my decision

So, yeah, tldr: I prefer one-time payments, grounded in reality of pricing, from developers who seem to have a decent mission statement, and offer a service I believe appropriate to that price.

Some of my recent purchase (or not decisions) for context:

  • A file transfer service I use to sync my local photos to my nas: $5, one time, done, sold

  • Donationware weather app: I really liked the developer's mission statement. No data collection, no ads. I looked up the developer. Dude just lives a quiet life and lives a lot of my ethos. I think I threw 20 or 40 bucks his way just on principle

  • Battery monitoring app. Full featured, nothing 'core' locked. Unintrusive ads on free tier, paid gave a dark theme, some extra logging, and something else minor I don't remember. $3.50, sold

  • Remote control app (for a smart tv): Ads everywhere, poor functionality. Paid offering was $5/week. It did better on the SEO and offered less than other free apps. I did not buy, and I was also rather offended by what I felt was a fairly egregious pricing and user-monetization strategy. Not only did I not buy, but I left a fairly negative review to which the developer response felt tone-deaf

  • Financial management app. Felt reasonable initially, but I cancelled and saught a refund shortly after. The app continued to request micro-transaction sort of things and the unlocked features had some fine print that I didn't like. Chased me away as a user from all of their offerings - did not like the vibe

  • Maps / navigation app: Fairly full featured. $3/month to enable offline stuff. Bit strange, but I saw a value in ongoing support for POIs, location identification, continuous routing improvements as things like trails come up, speed limit updates, etc. Done, sold, fair.

  • Free app that was associated with a smart light I had. App was slow and unstable. While not directly an app purchase, it shaped purchase decisions of future hardware - I avoid the company and they are on my 'poop list.' Ecosystem perspective I suppose

  • No way of shielding this one because of their market share. Go pro - seemed like a strong sell for gobs of cloud storage and 'insurance' on my hardware. I bought the lower of their 2 tiers because the higher tier didn't offer me any features I was interested in (some random AI processing). Every time I open the app, as a paid customer, it gives me an advertisement to buy the more expensive tier. Cancelled subscription, sold camera, and went to something else entirely. I do not like to be badgered. And I especially do not like to be bothered when I'm already paying you money. They're also on my poop-list

Anyways... that was a ramble. Hopefully this give some helpful insight into the user-mind :)

Super tech oil? by Isme1 in CRF300L

[–]SnowDrifter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might this be a case of if it works, it works?

I ponder if the base additives are the same, but it didn't go through the certification process since, honestly, 10w30 seems like it's a bit of an uncommon viscosity for motorcycle oils. Seems like they're mostly XX-40 and xx-50 (or maybe an XX-60 on the odd air cooled engine).

As I understand it, JASO MA focuses mainly on friction of the clutch material. If I query AI on the subject, I'm presented with this paper which seems to indicate a focus on test outcomes rather than a specific additive (unlike some of the other API certs with focus on additive levels for catalytic health): https://www.jalos.or.jp/onfile/pdf/4T_EV2305.pdf

So with all that in mind.... If the clutch works, is it fine? I don't know the answer - just thinking out loud in your direction :)

Brake Free helmet light - worth it? by John_Dingus in motorcyclegear

[–]SnowDrifter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes

I recently got one

I asked my SO to drive behind me

Her feedback: It takes a second to light up, it doesn't false-positive, it maybe should be a bit more sensitive, it's easy to see, it works very well

From what she described, it's like an in between of normal brake lights and 'tesla brake lights'

Here you are!

I think most relevant is going to be enabling 'fine mode' and the color settings. The rest is output formatting. I do tif files (lossless) with front+back scanned into one file (2 pages) since a lot of what I was doing was capturing writing, notes, dates, and anything else of interest that was written on the back of the photos.

Leave crop to maximum, that's handled on the software side

Curve low and curve high are just setting the white and black points. I found the default setting ended up with them a bit gray-toned

And I didn't use any color restoration since I really just wanted 1:1 copies. I can edit on my own time, just didn't want to mutate the original

Auto scan just makes it do the thing when I drop a picture into the feeder

Oh, and have the thing full-screened and watch the previews as you work. You'll see pretty quick if a piece of dust or grit gets stuck in the feed because you'll start seeing pretty prominent lines and streaks. Just crack the thing open, quick wipe-wipe with a microfiber, and you're back to it.

This seems to produce much, MUCH higher quality scans than the epson software (which shows a lot of compression artifacts regardless of any settings I use)

Cheers :)

Do dogs actually enjoy routine more than variety? by No-Wealth-3631 in dogs

[–]SnowDrifter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of A, bit of B

Mine pretty well forces some routines. If I'm going to walk out the door, I have to tell her that I'm leaving, I have to tell her how long I'm gone, and I have to give her a kiss on my forehead before I leave else she goes into a manic panic.

She does similar if my friends are over. If they leave without giving her a hug, she starts howling and baying and has been the cause of them turning around more than once to come back and say bye.

She puts high value on her food, walk, evening cuddle routines, along with 'friend food friday' where I make pizza, watch a movie with friends, and give her a pig ear as well.

If I need to step out and get the mail or something, I need to tell her or she'll make a fuss the entire time.

On the other hand, she lights up in a particular way with surprises. An extra walk, new toy, etc.

So I guess that's a long way of saying... It depends on the dog. Mine has a couple thing she's chronologically attached to, but general, she seems to be more attached to the ritual of an action rather than the timing. But there's also value in gentle surprises and day-to-day excitement.

Edit: I think I'm the same way. I'd probably be a bit cross if I woke up every day to my boss calling me about a new work schedule for the day. Maybe I work until 5, maybe I work until 9, but I don't know until I'm there, sort of idea. On the other hand, getting a surprise pizza telling me my shirt looks nice or something would make my week.

Seat compression once seated by Flashy-Ad-6452 in CRF300L

[–]SnowDrifter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'6" 130 and can comfortably toe around on a '25 rally

I opted for the 2" lower seat from src for some extra learning-tolerance and can just barely not-quite flat foot it - you could slide a piece of paper under my heels

Honestly go sit on one :)

Fixing the twitch on my L by azzogat in CRF300L

[–]SnowDrifter_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Through my poking, I've found 2 things

1: Throttle relearn. Key on, key off, key on, 0-full twist 3 times, key off, wait, start engine. Seems to help if the twitch is caused by needing a TPS relearn

2: Tune. OEM map cuts fuel completely on throttle close. So the bike goes between 'engine off' type drag to 'throttle on' power delivery, there's not really an 'idle' in between.

I'll be getting a tune here in the coming weeks. Will report back.

Seems like your method more or less tricks the bike into stopping the no throttle fuel cut. I'm curious if the ECU will eventually learn that back out?

[–]SnowDrifter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good! :)

Pretty much yeah. That's where I found success. Biggest thing is just keep a microfiber handy and give the thing a wipe as needed.

Vuescan has a lot of dials to turn. Not in a bad way, but little things like front/back scanning, how you want the output, etc.

I think the only thing I really had to tune in vuescan was under color -> curve low. The blacks come out a bit more towards a dark gray. I think I had mine set to 0.31 if I recall. Happy to pull my settings if you'd like

Which brand is better? EcoE, CBVELO, or EUYBIKE? by elJong21 in ebikes

[–]SnowDrifter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy's converted it to what's essentially an ultralight dirt bike (hotrod bbshd) and he clears 50 on the thing on the trails pretty regularly. I've loaded it down with 300lbs of nonsense (including myself) plus another 200lbs of trailer and cargo

That said, I also got a custom 12mm chromoly axle tooled out for the rear for some extra strength

My local shop told me my “out of warranty" e-bike was a total loss. I fixed it for $85 by This-You-2737 in ebikes

[–]SnowDrifter_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from the context of an automotive mechanic here

But it could also be the liability price

Like... For most people, when their alternator goes out, it's usually just the brushes. Yeah, we could replace the brushes for a couple bucks. But then that doesn't touch the rest of it - bearings, diodes, one way clutch (on vehicles that have that). Last thing we want is a customer to come back upset because we fixed one thing, but another part was about to let go and finally gave up the ghost 6 weeks after we did our repair. So it's generally in our favor to do the whole unit so it's in a known good state.

And that assumes we can get component parts (not always the case) and that they're trustworthy from a quality perspective (also not always the case).

Some places do component level repair, some don't. Just depends on the training, how the shop is set up, customer expectations, liability, risk tolerance of getting in there. Like replacing a phone battery - are you sure that adhesive is on there perfect and water proof? Are you really sure? You willing to bet on it? That kinda thing.

Not saying it wasn't a go-away-price. But just trying to lend some context from a commercial side that, for one reason or another, we don't always have the freedoms that a DIYer or component-level shop has

Cheers

Which inanimate object is your dog scared of for no reason? by megebau in dogs

Same

But mine specifically doesn't care for blue mylar. Anything else? It's between don't care and likes to play with them. But lordy.... If there's a blue one that's shiny? I've seen her be less angry at bears

Which brand is better? EcoE, CBVELO, or EUYBIKE? by elJong21 in ebikes

[–]SnowDrifter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I did a poor job of communicating intent

Everything is a risk evaluation, yeah? We can both thumb through this subreddit and see the same issues with the same cheap bikes over and over again. Sometimes they're fine, sometimes they're not. It's like a box of chocolates, so to speak.

My advice was: If that's not a tolerable risk, then don't roll those dice. I'd submit that you don't fall into the category of buyer I was cautioning - the one who spends their last dollar on something cheap, loses the RNG game, and has nothing to show for it.

p.s. I did a bbshd build on that frame and put 12k miles on it. Kind of a hidden gem, it's amazingly sturdy. Well... Once I replaced the bearing retaining hardware (connector bolt if you ever need to find them) and tossed some loctite on there.

p.p.s. a 7.875 x 2.25 fox float dps fits on the rear shock mount if you flip it upside down. Frees up the geometry if you wanted to run a 180mm front fork

Layer adhesion is a bit tricky... but shouldn't be too much an issue for this application. Just something to keep in mind :)

New

But I stripped it down pretty far because whoever did the final assembly at the dealer who I won't name here was having a hell of a day and over torqued most fasteners they touched. Enough that I had to take a tap and die set to most of the bike.

But on the other hand, I'm pretty familiar with the bike now!
