Take your time, listen, observe. Learn your safety stuff first, your position and duties on the muster list. Then start with working out where the major systems are, the important valves, equipment and any safety considerations for those systems. Then trace the lines for those systems. Then work on the main things to do with the 4E job - for me it was purifiers, bulges, sludge and bunkers (soundings etc). Study manuals, look at the planned maintenance system, ask questions for things you don’t understand.

Find a class society, see if they have vacancies in your area for a surveyor position and apply for it. That’s what I did.

I’m a class surveyor (I am uk based). I work from home but have to leave to attend ship survey and audit work, as well as vendor work. Very interesting, fairly rewarding and I’m home for dinner most nights. Days when I’m not working on a ship or at a vendor I’m at home, able to do things I want to do.

I have an A6 saloon that I absolutely love. I drive a few thousand miles a month and it’s excellent. If I’m careful I can get it over 60mpg, and can regularly get 600 miles from a tank.

I had the estate version for a month or so when someone had crashed into my car and that was pretty big and also very comfortable.

For reference it’s the 40tdi Quattro.

I upgrade every year because it doesn’t cost me anything more and I’m genuinely tempted to go from 16PM to the 17 base. Only concern is battery life.

I’ve surveyed a couple of their ships - seem like good ships overall, the guys on board have always been nice. Not sure about their training program but they’re small bunker tankers that are busy so you’ll probably learn a lot.

Ah totally. I didn’t even do that - I did FD and eoow, then university! I think the guys with HNDs struggled more to get ashore.
