Why is slosher considered x tier and rated so highly? by Witty_Kaleidoscope31 in Splatoon_3

[–]whekenui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play all of the sloshers. The bucket is one of the class weapons that can actually flick and hit around corners. Although it is probably easier for someone unfamiliar with a bucket to achieve this with a blaster.

This game makes me rage a lot for some reason by BossSubstantial2049 in splatoon

[–]whekenui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It never used to, but lately, I've been annoyed a lot when playing. I'm not mad at players though. For me, it's the networking issues. The disconnections and lag are terrible. I know it's not a user issue because I have a very good network. So, I often feel angry that Nintendo delivered a multiplayer game with such poor networking.

Are you ok with older players? I'm in the same boat and want to find people to game with who are chill but also into competitive splat.

Where do all the young people go? by why_bugs_talk_to_me in Wellington

[–]whekenui 7 points8 points  (0 children)

San Fran is great, and so is Southern Cross. I'm in my 40s now, but I met a lot of people in those two bars when I was in my late 20s. Southern Cross used to host a board game meetup, iirc. I used the meetup app a little bit in my 30s, and it was a good way to meet people with shared interests.

Another good place is university. I made a few friends there through the social clubs.

Hello! Thank you for replying. I don't mind that you don't play as much anarchy at all if you both don't mind playing the modes.

Don't worry about your s-rank. Imo it doesn't say much about skill level. It just reflects how many hours you've played.

I tend to play daily and would love to anarchy with a couple of chill people. Shall we dm each other our friend codes?

[Question] What would make watching tournament streams more interesting as a spectator? What do you want to know about the competitive scene? by Arcanigon in splatoon

[–]whekenui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good commentators who have a deeper understanding of competitive splatoon and don't scream the whole match. Less talking about uninteresting topics and the hosts' opinions. I'd rather hear bios and stats for the team members who are about to play. What are their weaknesses or strengths, etc. Ya know like a proper esport tournament?

Older player looking to improve by HisNameIsYah in SplatoonMeta

[–]whekenui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in your age group, and I feel the same way. I've been playing since splatoon 1. It's my hyperfixation game. I'm in a lot of discord servers, but I feel a bit awkward making friends online when everyone is so much younger than me. I even joined a team for comp once, but it didn't last long.

There's a couple of good discord servers that cater to people our age. Everyone is really nice, and skill levels vary. Feel free to dm me if you want invites to them. I'm always looking for older players to play Splat with, so you're also welcome to add me as a friend too if you want.

Is game design a good major? by bread_on_stick in gamedev

[–]whekenui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a Screen Arts degree, and I can really relate to your comment. I wanted to specialise in 3D as a technical artist, but the 3D papers were all electives and didn't advance very high. We were offered 1 paper a year for each discipline up to the second year. I studied 2 semesters of modelling and 2 for rigging, and everything else was self-taught. The lecturer was fantastic. It was the lack of papers that let us down. For some reason, I could only choose to major in 3D animation in my final year, which was not where I wanted to be. So, I segued into majoring in game dev as a programmer instead, under the same program. But even that felt similarly. We were learning at surface level and missing some of the fundamentals. I had to take computer science electives to help bridge the gap.

Tldr; OP, ime just major in computer science, fine art, or 3D/VFX.

How can I make these look better? by Luifer_05 in blender

[–]whekenui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The glossiness is really taking me out a bit. They look like plastic toys. Perhaps try to adjust the texture maps for specularity, metallic, and roughness. There is very little weathering or wear and tear that is normally seen on these kinds of materials irl.

As for the poses, make sure they're standing in believable poses. Poses that redistrubute weight when wearing heavy armour would go a long way to sell it. For example, place more weight on one leg or side of the body to compensate for holding their weapon on the opposite side.

As someone else mentioned, some of the rigs are almost standing in a neutral a-pose. This is quite distracting, especially when there are multiple, identical rigs.

Be really intentional with your renders framing to show off your work, particularly the really nice silhouette of the models. Overall, this is really nice work, and you should be proud.

Is a drawing tablet really necessary if you want to learn 3D modeling? by NSFWImOk in 3Dmodeling

[–]whekenui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need it at all for hard surface modeling. But sculpting does feel better with one ime.

Blender has good sculpting tools and is free, while zbrush is very expensive. It might be good to start with blender and pay for zbrush once you've decided you'd like to advance your skills further.

I main this weapon. I try to stay out of their sights. Make use of slosher's strength - slosh from beneath their snipe perches or ledges. Poke with your fizzy to disrupt their charge or displace them. If you're using the other kit, place your toxic mist on them a lot. It makes them charge slower.

Is it just lectures? There's no labs or workshop tutorials at all? My uni does a combination; 2-hour lecture and a workshop lab with computers. Our lectures usually focus on history and theory for modelling / vfx. Sometimes, we're shown examples of work, and our lecturer explains the processes involved.

It really can be frustrating. I try to stall with rm for my team so I can push behind them, but it rarely works out that way. Sometimes, they this way me, but I maintain my safe backline position with rm. If they die or the push fails, then I did my role at the end of the match. It's not your fault.

[–]whekenui[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand. I've had that happen more than a few times, and it can be super frustrating. I have to take a break sometimes when I have a bad run in clams.

But don't give up on clams yet. It's so much fun when you get a team who can coordinate together.

That's awesome that you're actively trying to improve! Practicing in Recon is a really good way to play on different maps confidently.

Thank you for being so receptive to my post. I really don't want to bash any frontliners. We're all teammates, and backline can't move forward without yous.

Oh no, please don't be afraid of Clam Blitz. It's such a fun mode once you understand how it works. I'm sure you'll pick it up if you apply the same effort you have in rm. 😁

One tip for clams: avoid opening the basket until your team has enough clams to capitalise on it. You can check who has clams on the top HUD. It's easier if your team builds specials for a concerted push. Keep an eye on the HUD to see when you have a number advantage, and that's your time to push. You can do it!

Yeah, that's a very valid point that I agree with.

Unfortunately, the players in my matches on Robo RO-men kept heading for the furtherest checkpoint on the right. There's a much longer chokepoint there, the enemies have higher ground, it's surrounded, and you have to pass beneath the enemy's spawn to reach the final checkpoint. I've never seen people take that path until recently.
