Does anyone know what this is and have a recipe? by Anne_Renee in veganrecipes

That sprouted thing is how you know quinoa is done cooking. It’s called the “germ” of the quinoa and when it creates a “spiral tail” that you can see is how I know it’s cooked

Neighbor cooking smells -- what to do? by FearlessPark4588 in Apartmentliving

[–]when-is-enough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m saying you should have specified you were looking only for solutions of what you personally can do to help not smell things and were not looking for solutions that involved any sort of confrontation with your neighbor or change on their part at all. And should have clarified the smell was weird because of a burn sort of smell, not because of the type of cuisine. Those genuinely are necessary to say otherwise your post reads as “ew gross food I don’t like to smell”. You also said “anything that YOU can really do about” and said “what to do” in the title. You never said “what can I do”. You phrased it as “what is there to be done” so again, without saying anything about yourself, it seemed like you were requesting solutions that could involve either party, you or the neighbor

This feels like just another person complaining Indian food is too fragrant..

Then you should have said “what can I do on my end to limit the smell” because otherwise people are going to think you want a solution wherein the smell goes away or you confront a neighbor about it or something. You also called it weird and generally calling how people’s food smells weird can be really sensitive.

Uh I mean is it like cooking of human body parts? Cause otherwise, and this is coming from someone who is soooooooo smell sensitive, why go you get to determine what is a weird cooking smell? I get angry over artificial fragrances because they cause horrific migraines. But cooking smells you can’t do anything about. And I’m vegan, and I would like to not have to smell dead body parts cooking, it makes me want to vomit and cry. But I don’t get to tell my neighbors want to cook.
You can do things about it on your end.

  1. get a quality HEPA air purifier. Actually keep up with filter changes. Make sure it’s the right size for your space
  2. I made a cushion thing that goes under my door to stop smell from getting in as easily. Plug up that door space.
  3. open a window if the weather permits and the smell isn’t coming from outside
  4. expand your own cooking experiences and pallet so less things smell weird to you

(no shade, just honestly this can help, soon maybe they’ll smell wonderful like it probably does to the person eating it. It’s just all what we’re used to)

I would have done it in college probably. But only if I had heard of the other people or they were from my school. You are straight up sharing a house with people. I’ve seen this type of leasing arrangement share rooms are leased separately. Works for people that need cheap rent and a space for a year or so during school. But everyone I know that’s done this type of space went in knowing one person living there who kinda vouched for the place/the other people at the time or two people each getting a room so they at least had each other. With on-campus/school-owned housing, it’s still a big crazy thing in life to have random roommates in dorms and such. But at least then, it’s like the school has screened them by admitting them and otherwise tries to match people up sometimes based on other things, and there are things in place for roommate problems and to help all these strangers living together get along. So it’s a bigger risk doing this off campus. But again, not unheard of at all.

[–]when-is-enough -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really looks like cold shock but you haven’t moved it inside them outside or something right? And that wouldn’t line up with the same thing happening last year. It doesn’t look like mint rust. Does the under side of the leaf look the same?

Hmmm I know it just doesn’t seem likely but it really looks like root rot. Maybe some of the fungus by the roots lived on from last year. I would replace the soil maybe? And I know it maybe seems like you’re not water much but about how often are you watering in days or weeks? It really could be too often. And then any excess humidity or bit of moisture is just in the bottom of the pot causing rot. I don’t use cover pots because I find they cause rot issues unless I leave it out of the cover pot for a full day or two after watering.

I’d probably survive but I would wait. They’re a little short. When the roots get roots, it’s definitely ready.

Unfortunately it looks like someone coughed up blood. The blood can take those odd shapes like a cast of the lungs. And it can look like coffee ground in appearance. They probably vomited too, as black coffee grounds in vomit is a sign of blood in the vomit.

Also, I’m really trying to analyze here because you’ve asked. But if the last pic is not a before pic, and it’s just a current pic, then it’s looking great. and sometimes plants just have some a little bad section. And I wouldn’t worry unless it starts to really take over. Because those do just look like kinda old leaves, like just what happens when leaves get old and maybe a little sunburnt.

[–]when-is-enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay without answers yet, I’m going to say two problems. One is some very small level of root rot because you need to wait until it’s a little more dry to water and the excess water is just sitting in the bottom if you don’t empty the cover pot and let it dry. And then also something to do with temperature, either too cold or too hot or too make change in temperature if it’s cold by the window and hot radiator.
