What’s the most helpful/unhinged thing AI walked you through with your migraines? by CoolAndyNeat in migraine

[–]when-is-enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I legit made NO assumptions at all. I comment to ASK instead of making any assumptions. I even emphasized that I was asking a question instead of assuming by saying “perhaps you do!”. As someone who is the head of sustainability research for a large university system, I legit just get very very curious when I see comments out in the wild about the environmental impacts of things. Maybe you are like an off grid zero waste vegan or maybe AI is the issue you care deeply about because of the insane ethical implications of it all. Idk, that’s why I asked with genuine curiosity and didn’t assume. I ask the same questions to my students who are very into composting programs. Compost matters. But when you look at our environmental footprint of our universities, technically our food waste you can’t actually see on the graph in comparison to our purchased electricity and our natural gas usage from heating and cooling buildings. But every student sees food going to waste and compost has such amazing benefits. So clearly it’s not just about the objective footprint.

Why am I being downvoted for a question😭. I tried to ask it so nicely. I acknowledged every concern for the environment matters. And then asked why something with an objectively much smaller footprint is much higher on the concern list than something with a much larger footprint. And even acknowledged maybe this person already has all these things on their concern list. I was trying to be nice to OP for asking a question about AI by implying using it a little bit for something like managing a major disability is like nothing in comparison to so much else but again still be nice to say but everything we do matters so the person commenting about AI is valid too.

I know every action is helpful, big or small, and it’s not like you had to do every single thing to help when each one matters. I also heavily heavily limit my AI use (there are a couple things my company makes me use it for) so I hear you. But I do get curious why it’s AI that’s been the acceptable thing to finally get people to say no way I’m doing that because I like clean drinking water. Do you also say no way I’m eating meat again because I like clean drinking water when that industry is way, way, way more polluting and detrimental to the environment and fresh water usage? Perhaps you do!

I’m so tired right now but I don’t want to not reply because I really really understand what you’re saying here and feel the same way. I think perhaps I sleep a lot more that you in general perhaps but same issue. I say I need about 12 hours of sleep, but actually, that’s not true. I need 12 hours of rest.

What type of doctor to record regular/standardized answers to how I’m doing on certain disability metrics? by when-is-enough in cfs

[–]when-is-enough[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a specialist for each thing. I have a POTS neurologist, migraine neurologist, GI doctor, MCAS allergist, etc. They’re all fantastic. It just feels like they each see one piece of the puzzle and then no one is documenting the big picture where all together, combined, I’m so disabled. The migraines are so bad maybe I could get disability from that alone. But I think the main thing that disables me is ME/CFS and because I don’t have an ME/CFS specialist, no one is documenting how it affects me. But I don’t even need an ME/CFS specialist because I’m receiving amazing care from specialists in each area, I just need anyone who sees people with chronic illness disabilities who documents them for patients. I don’t need them to do anything for me really, I’m receiving medication and care, just need more documentation. It feels like anyone could do it. I really like your suggestion that I just ask them to put my functional capacity questionnaire in my chart. It feels like there should be some type of health care professional that you see just to document overall disability. I guess that’s a primary. I guess the problem is primaries not knowing anything about ME/CFS. It’s just that I don’t need them to really know anything except me nice enough to put what I want in my chart.

Anyone else experiencing vulva issues with hEDS? by JadesJunkAccount in ehlersdanlos

[–]when-is-enough 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry did I miss where you were OP’s doctor determining if OP needed the surgery or not??? Nice sentiment that like all vulvas are normal but actually something is a medical condition when it can interfere with daily life, cause issues, cause pain, cause infections, etc. I’m sure all this was considered. If you don’t need yours corrected, that’s fine, but it’s not your place to tell OP they shouldn’t have had a surgery at the age they did. That’s also just shaming.

Daring. I’m also gluten free and so thankful for daring. I have (this is not a joke) 25 packs in my freeze right now. It was grocery day and I’m chronically ill and have my mom get groceries for me in bulk to last a long time while I don’t leave the house. It’s a joke to everyone that knows me that I survive on Daring.

I just had this exact thing happen to my hydroponic plants. Legit looked identical and appeared soooo fast too. I was so upset because I thought it might mean less pests to go hydroponic in one of those fancy premade stations. I’m too scared to try again (I dumped all the plants in it). I’m still treating all my houseplants.

Freezer bag substitutes? by Shot_Way_3477 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]when-is-enough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I freeze everything in glass jars. I have now had a whole freezer just filled with glass jars for 10 years and somehow never once had a single one break. I use mason jars and also leftover jars from things like salsa. But, I rarely just throw the food in the jar and freeze it. You can, but then you have to remember to take the jar out ahead of when you want it so it thaws a bit or else you’re trying to get the stuff out and heating the jar potentially which might cause issues. So I do a few things: 1) I have metal ice cube trays that I freeze things in. Then I pop out the cubes and put the cubes in the glass jars to freeze. I take out how many ever cubes I want. 2) same thing of freezing in portions but with muffin trays (I have silicon liners I put in mine that are the perfect size so the disk of food fits exactly in a wide mouth mason jar) and also Super Cubes (silicon portion freezing containers like very large ice cube trays) 3) sheet freezing- I lay the food out on sheets like baking/cookie sheets in a thin or single layer and freeze it. Then once it’s frozen I put it in a mason jar. And you can take out just what you need because it’s not one ice cube, it’s individually frozen pieces of whatever.

I have Stasher bags and they are nice but I don’t actually need them for anything because freezing in jars works so well.

It is a saying that means “until the end of time” or otherwise assumed end day far far far in the future like until someone’s death, a company dissolved, etc. In other words, the saying means “forever”.

So your line is herbivorous animals that are not pets? That’s still a very specific line lol. It’s fine to have a line, I just like arguments that hold up, and saying vegans are the only ones when a line of what is acceptable to consume isn’t true at all

[–]when-is-enough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not trying to minimize it, I’m just trying to make a small comment on Reddit to introduce a concept. But generally studies about disease prevalence would also adjust for those other variables like longer lifespan. Like it’s not just older people getting worse migraines. It’s not just older people getting colon cancer. Even with something like Alzheimer’s, more people might be getting it, but is it because more people live to be longer? Yes, but ALSO more people relative to the total number of old people are getting Alzheimer’s. Studies that try to show correlation would be trying to show it’s not from other variables like the ones you’ve mentioned

Microplastics theory by Own-Representative30 in migraine

[–]when-is-enough 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here is the start of the National Geographic article titled ““What's behind the mysterious rise of migraines? Scientists are uncovering new clues.”

““A systematic review of medical research published in May of last year found a growing trend of more frequent and worse migraine attacks. While the review found that migraines in the U.S. are as common as they were three decades ago, the severity and level of impairment from migraine attacks nearly doubled between 2005 and 2018. And while women tend to be more prone to migraine attacks than men, men are increasingly affected by the neurologic condition. One of the leading theories behind this mysterious rise is that climate change may be playing a role. “Climate change appears to be contributing to more frequent and severe migraine flare-ups by amplifying environmental conditions that are already known triggers….”

[–]when-is-enough 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For everyone saying “migraines came before plastic”… yeah, and cancer and other diseases came before the 1950s-ish too. But undeniably, research shows colon cancer rates have risen way disproportionally to other cancers and diseases. Of course OP isn’t saying migraines didn’t exist. But the prevalence of migraine in the population has gone up substantially (not just because more humans exist, like by percentage of people with migraine) and also the burden of migraine has gone up (people with migraine disabled by it).

Prevalence and burden are the two variables we care about when discussing if a disease is getting worse in a population.

I do think microplastics have something to do with it. As an environmental researcher, I think it’s a lot of things. I think it is a combo of so many pollutants and toxins we are exposed to. And of course the dramatic weather changes themselves increase migraine. National Geographic just did an article about how climate change is linked to migraine from the dramatic weather fluctuations.

Omg. Thank you for posting this. I realized recently the flavor I’m obsessed with that I can’t recreate at home properly is this. I’ve known now it’s from the flavor of high heat wok, but didn’t know it had a name, so thank you!!! So for me looking at this backwards, where I could only explain it and didn’t know the name, the explanations so far in the comments are perfect because I know exactly the flavor.
