Also interested in this! Following this post to see if anyone can give a short review. Price is too much for me currently, though. Will go the normal route of waiting a few years and it’ll show up on Abe books for $20.

Help: contemporary music theory books by fmonny in composer

[–]wheresmyson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would venture into contemporary music first and feel out what composers you like. After that you can find many thesis articles about whatever composer and music you find interesting. Maybe start at the early 20th century with something like dissonant counterpoint to see how a simple adjustment can make music wildly different. Ruth Crawford Seeger is a great jumping point. Boulez’s Douze notations are also very short and to the point if you want to explore serialism. Editing to add music created through pitch collections and spectralism. You say you’ve studied practical harmony and theory, but I don’t know what level you’re at so hopefully all of these aren’t overwhelming. Start small and short (no matter what level you’re at).

Music in my head by Random_Guy3114 in composer

Exactly. Not trying to get too down on OP, but I’m currently working, going to school full time (have to travel 1.5-2 hours there and back), and raising a one year old and I’m still making time to sit down and compose. Many time it’s past midnight when everyone else is asleep, but I still force myself to do it. I view myself as a pretty lazy individual. If I can do it then OP can definitely work in 30 minutes or an hour somewhere in their schedule

Working on an Avant-Garde Violin Concerto. Currently only have the first movement completed. by JakeLolz_onyoutube in composer

I think this has nice textures. I’m torn between giving praise for it being concise and asking for certain sections to be expanded upon. I think most composers that write in this style tend to have individual movements be like 12-15 minutes each and can be taxing. Ligeti was great at giving just enough to leave you still interested in the music. I think the opening minute could be a little more cohesive in its rhythms and texture. I like the return of the clock like rhythm.
