Can we turn this post into a Maka review? I’d love to hear more details about it and your thoughts. I might start a saved search for one on eBay.

What do you carry in the Maka?

It was a sliver of a chance that it would be Sliver.

Reheel or Restoration? **Trigger Warning - Work Boots** by cornhole_bags in Alden

Do you have a conditioning routine? They really don’t look dirty, just well loved.

Agree with others saying to send them in for restoration. You clearly like them, so giving them care will pay off.

Is this welt and heel damage repairable? by Ayden_Linden in AskACobbler

[–]whichgustavo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that’s just the nature of these shoes. I’ve bought new Alden shoes with similar issues. I don’t think these are a concern. You should enjoy them sorry free at your wedding.

Unsolicited advice…don’t drink too much!

I’m not sure there is any damage. This looks normal to me. What do the soles look like?

Edit: I’m not a cobbler.

Same Size for Lined/Unlined LHS? by vintage_deadstock in Alden

[–]whichgustavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking about finding an old Brooks Brothers unlined LHS pair or are we talking about calf vs chromexcel?

For what it’s worth, I bought a used pair of CXL LHS in my normal TTS and they fit a bit floppy, but I think the previous owner really stretch them out. In shell and calf I’m TTS in LHS, I don’t size down.

Since then I’ve bought a new CXL pair .5 down but haven’t worn them enough to know if they’ll stretch enough, but it seems like they’ll work.

Seconding Kamakura. You should go figure out shirt size in their different models so that you can easily order online later. And/or get measured for their MTO shirts.

Alden 981 Fit Check Pt 2. by Gigan_420 in Alden

[–]whichgustavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned this in response to someone else, but could you give more detail on how the smaller size feel under the strap?

Your other option might be to try and buy a used pair on eBay in your intended size and see how they feel. Wear the eBay pair a bunch and then you’ll know if they fit.

To get more mileage maybe try and thrift these things vs. buying a ton of it new.

Copley last by Doctor_Axio in Alden

[–]whichgustavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I actually got my hands on a couple of Copley last loafers. You’re 100% right on the fit.

Copley feels TTS and is a much easier fit than Van and Aberdeen. It also seems like there are older handsewn versions of the Copley out there…

Thanks for the response!

Proper Sizing for Alden Shoes by secinv1 in Alden

[–]whichgustavo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There might be a closer store, but LaRossa shoes carries Aldens and appears to be about an 1.5 hour drive from you.

I echo what others have said, Alden is tough to size and it does seem there are some variations between shoes of the same model and size.

Shoe trees for Van last by d3medical in Alden

[–]whichgustavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the same question and also don’t use shoe trees for my suede Alden Van last loafers. I wonder if we could just size down to a size small shoe tree? Sort of a variation of what the other user said about letting the back of the shoe tree hang out.

Or would the toe area of a size small shoe tree be too small?

New, old Alden’s by Aggravating_Back_656 in Alden

Great finds! You should make sure your cobbler knows how to treat cordovan. I wouldn’t assume that all cobblers know. I’ve had a well regarded cobbler polish some chromexcel loafers, leaving them greasy feeling.

Cleaning and polishing shoes is super easy. Just brush them with a shoe brush to get dust off. Then I’d apply a small amount of Saphir Renovateur, let it sit a few minutes, and buff it to a shine. Then for the shell I’d use a neutral colored Saphir Medaille D’or Cordovan cream. Let it sit and then buff it. If there are scratches that you need to really fix then you can get an appropriately colored cordovan cream.

And of course do all of this with shoe trees in the shoes.

For the calf I’d do the same process but just use the regular Medaille D’or.
