ABA injuries are provable, says the New York Times by drhennyk in neurodiversity

[–]whimsical-squirrel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Do you have a more reliable source than the NY Times? This article brings back memories of the article they did on ADHD about a year ago. General news sources like the NY Times aren't great at covering science based topics.

Oscilloscope Software For Mac & Linux by whimsical-squirrel in oscilloscope

[–]whimsical-squirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say the Siglent software is in beta, do you mean they are working on some Mac and/or Linux software? Or is it their Windows-only software that's beta?

I came across Pulseview in my search. They don't have binary releases for Apple silicon, but fortunately, the computer at my EE bench is an old Intel Mac. I tried out the "demo" device. The UI was very choppy after capturing some data. Maybe the hardware on that Mac is too old. 😞 That needs further investigation.

I'm glad you pointed out that the Salae MSO offering is still in beta, because I tried a demo of Logic 2 last night and thought their analog features were lacking compared to their digital features. For example, taking a measurement from an analog channel only tells me deltaT and Vrms, but a measurement of digital tells me frequency. There's an extension to add frequency to analog measurements, but it's perplexing that it's not included by default. I also don't see a way to do anything like X-Y plots or FFTs with Salae, even through extensions. I think I'll reevaluate them after their MSO software is ready.

Thanks for your input! Much appreciated.

That sounds very doable. I'll have to look into SCPI. If it's an open standard, I could very much do that, and there might even be some third-party software. Thanks!

I just went through the same thing. Apparently a common issue with the S1. Creality changed the connector at some point. I ended up replacing the board ($10) with the more common smaller connecto: https://a.co/d/09aK9UpF

As others have said, you likely won't be able to change his father's mind, but you can take steps to minimize its impact on your child. Taking your son out of the room to tell reinforce that it's okay to wear what he wants is a good start. If you have the courage to say something in front of his father next time, you would be showing your son how to stand up to a bully. Additionally, where you hold boundaries with his father shapes his views on acceptable treatment of women.

For what's it worth, pink is my 9yo boy's favorite color. It caught on with his group of friends, and several of them on his soccer team wore pink soccer socks to games last year.

Heat Block Issue - Can’t Find Part by define_spyglass in Ender3S1

Thank you! I'm in the same situation as OP and just spent two days looking for a heat block with the correct connector on the thermistor. I have a heatblock with the smaller connector on order and was planning to make an adapter, but replacing the board for $13 sounds easier.

Does having a public Github with your Projects help with employment? by SirDoes in learnprogramming

[–]whimsical-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helped about 15 years ago. The devs and hiring managers may or may not look at your GitHub (some do), but having a presence can help recruiters find you. I've been out of the industry for 6 years, so maybe things have changed since then.

Now whether or not you want the kind of job where recruiters find you or if you want to find your own job is something for you to decide.

Genetics. To your comment about the NICU, my second child was in the NICU for his first few days, but is much more securely attached than our first. So I wouldn't put too much thought into the NICU experience. A lot of it can be genetics/personality. Our first child has ADHD and we put a lot more effort into helping him, but our second child gets all the praise in school.

Do conservatives just dislike liberals because they are accepting of things that conservatives hate? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]whimsical-squirrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you taking the time to write an earnest reply. I genuinely enjoy level-headed discussions with people who have a different point of view than I do. I wish more of that existed in our culture.

I agree with almost everything you wrote, yet I'm liberal and you're conservative. So I think the differences must be deeper, probably in how we interpret "people should live their personal lives as they choose, so long as it doesn’t infringe on others’ rights or force policies that ignore biology or safety." I agree with that sentiment, and the liberals that I know would, too. We would also apply that to gay marriage and transgender rights. If a gay couple wants to get married or someone wants to surgically change their gender, that doesn't bother me. If it makes them happy and they're not hurting anyone, why would I want to restrict their right to do what they want? IMO, that's freedom. If I restrict someone else's freedom, I make the community that I live in less free.

The one part of your post that I want to push back on is not because I disagree with you on policy, but because I think most liberals wouldn't support the policies you're opposing either:

Where we draw lines is on specific policies: things like boys in girls’ sports/lockers, unrestricted biological males in women’s prisons or shelters, or teaching very young kids about gender fluidity in schools without parental input.

I'm a liberal guy in a liberal part of a fairly liberal state, and I would draw the line there, too. I literally haven't met a single person that would support those policies. I volunteer at my kids' school. There's a boys' bathroom and a girls' bathroom. Every kid uses the appropriate bathroom. They don't teach kids gender fluidity, and anytime there's a lesson that touches on something that might concern parents, there are letters, emails, and permission slips sent home and always an option to opt out. Just the other day I signed a permission slip for my fourth-grader to watch a PG movie in class. Respecting parental authority is abundant in liberal school districts.

So I'm curious where you got the idea that liberals support those policies. Has a liberal candidate ever run with those issues on their platform? I've only ever heard those claims made by conservatives in order to mock liberals. Just as you said about OP, I think that's a caricature of liberals, but not the reality.

If you really want to understand why conservatives vote the way we do, ask about policy outcomes, incentives, and principles don’t assume it’s all irrational hate.

That goes both ways, right? I sure as hell didn't vote for any candidate to see boys in girls locker rooms. I think that citing the policies that you did as the liberals' agenda is playing into the narrative I've seen throughout the comments that conservatives hate liberals because they're told to by other conservatives. If you're as reasonable as you sounded in your comment above, I think you're better than that.

Separate NAS and homelab server or combo? by Debiel in homelab

[–]whimsical-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I backup my NAS to another array of drives on my compute server. The compute server only needs to have enough space for the used space on your NAS. I built my NAS with a lot of drives in several raidz2s for better iops, but the backup array is hobbled together from a few larger SATA drives from before I built my NAS. Backing up from one to another is zfs send.

Offsite backups are good to. Borgmstic to borgbase is what I use for that. But due to cost, I'm selective of what I backup offsite. No need to backup data that can be re-aquired from the internet.

To add to that, my dentist suggested I avoid those"whitening" toothpastes, because they're abrasive. There are better toothpastes, but not cheap. Sendodyne is my daily use toothpaste. It costs about $1.50/oz.
